I can feel every single emotion listening to this. Every time Ryan felt like he wasnt enough, when he he felt like a failure, when he thought it was all lost. Hes such a unique talent. One of of the highlights of my life was being captivated by him for hours while he performed in Cincinnati.
for people who have personal reasons for loving songs - in May 2012 It had been raining for three solid weeks finally with my new licence and car went to pick up my drunk dad from a country pub - and the journey into the country side i had to sit and wait. the colours in the grass and sky so beautiful - and this song came on and i was just started to click with this album. The grass had little purple flowers, yellow and pink and the grass was green stretched on for miles all changing patterns in the wind and the sun set so beautiful and this was playing as I was driving. Felt so free happy birthday
I'm 32....never have I listened to a song & cried....these lyrics, although vague, are just so identifiable & can be applied to thousands & thousands of life experiences. How fuckin beautiful is this song!!?
I am 58 and I haven't had a song move me like this in a long long Time.I memorized the words in 2 days of listening to this song over and over.Prisoner got me hooked in the spring when I was away from my wife of 30 years traveling by myself. He plays in Atlanta in a old church in 8 days.I Have to be there!!
By far one of the best songs I have ever heard in my life... over the years I keep coming back to it. Ryan Adams may very well be a genius. Words can't describe how much I love this song. This year (2023) I'm going to learn it on guitar.
I wrote what you hear, and it would follow that you think I’m writing in the same reactionary vein as those two Jews when actually Dylan lifted it’s not dark yet from my intellectual property and I listened to CSsnd Nash, not so much Young
Love this song. I really relate to Ryan Adams, especially his self-medication story. It's really inspiring to see him on stage, sober, allowing himself to be vulnerable, even though he's clearly uncomfortable. I really hope he doesn't quit, even if it's difficult
Hands-down one of the most “in the moment” singer songwriter recordings out there. Even in the context of RA’s deep skills and deeper well of materials, I’d be surprised if he didn’t consider this a cosmic alignment.
I have listened to Ryan Adams for as long as I can remember. Every time I hear a song live, he plays it differently and it reaches out to me a different way. This guy is a musical genius.
Simply the best I have heard from Ryan. So emotional on this one. Just him and his guitar. That voice.... And another hero (Neil Finn) is there as well. Neil looks totally absorbed at 2.55.
I wrote this and 95% of the lyricisms for his 16 original releases…and beyond “ strangers angels” also shows up in a Cure goody, Just like Heaven…I wrote that storyline also
Ryan Adams has done some great stuff , he plays on the fact that the music industry and media think he is a bit of a "geek" and plays them at their own game because in the end TALENT will shine through....
I can never listen to this once. Its like falling down the rabbit hole. Sublime. I want this version played when I take my last journey. Dancing in the endless moonlight, in the headlights of cars.
my favorite version of all of his acoustical attempts that I have ever seen of this song....absolute crystal....you always surpass Mr. Adams..you really do...thank you
Is writing comes out of his deep soul it feels like some spirit inside of him that he conjures up this beautiful music and these wonderful lyrics He's one of the best I've seen him alive and he is fantastic
Ryan Adams is surely a genius. I am playing this song and what appears to be fairly easy to play is actually very difficult - particularly if you want to impart anywhere near the emotion that Ryan achieves.
Holy frijoles, he is on fire here. Ain't it great how the two other musicians are just a wrapped up in this moment? Look at the love in Janis' eyes. Wow.
Wow, I've discover this amazing artist today and have been listening to many of his songs. Very impressive and beautiful music and skilled. Some of the prettiest music I've heard in a while. Props to him. Fanastic musician.
KJ, glad you made it here! This is RA's best work, I think. The BBC sound and visual quality are tremendous. If you see him with his red, white and blue guitar, you can usually count a great performance.
amazing lyrics. I love the look on Neil's face during the song. I also love when Ryan gets to a point where the words are barely coming out... almost like a whisper.
After watching more videos of his....it makes this one even more mind blowing! This has to be one of the most beautiful performances ever. The way in which he delivers the words, almost a Mumford n sons kind of acoustic voice but waaay better IMO. Brilliant!
I managed to catch a few of these Beeb programmes;MORE please BBC ;Love the rapt way that Neil Finn sits listening;Janis Ian whilst having aged (of course) physically, still has the same voice she had back in the "At seventeen" days - Magic (alll of 'em)
Where do you land when in the arms of transendence? Oh, its gentle grace. Cut to the chase, one of, if NOT the best of artists of the 21st Century. So blown. So different, ,and sometimes all it took was simply one song. And we speak of balls folks?? Still in a blur, coming up for a breath for air.
Takes me back to those early acoustic tours before the big album dropped. He'd just left Whiskeytown and was running solo. As much as my finances allowed, i followed Ryan's shows and knew I was listening to the greatest songwriter and performer America has produced. He was so funny between songs, playful, as though he was lightweight - and then he'd perform a song that touched your soul. I love Ryan's music so much - which is why I' so pissed off that he's blocked me on Twitter for something I joked about.
I wish I could have seen him them. I only discovered him in about 2011. Don't worry about being blocked, it's happened to me too but I still support him. He's got bad mental problems so don't take it personally. xx
The album version of this song, and quite often when he performs it live, he does it uptempo and electric. I think it really is a better song done as he did it here. It is a powerful and beautiful song.
I can feel every single emotion listening to this. Every time Ryan felt like he wasnt enough, when he he felt like a failure, when he thought it was all lost. Hes such a unique talent. One of of the highlights of my life was being captivated by him for hours while he performed in Cincinnati.

I am a time traveller here from the future to tell you that you were 100% correct all those years ago. Amazing version of an amazing song

His music would stand out in any generation. Most prolific songwriter in the last 15 years.
LOVING THIS MAN,.........HE IS SOOOO TALENTED....
......that you've HEARD OF!!!!!!

@@wlgj1341 well done!!!
@@elizabethdevries8028 I’ve written the lyrics for 95% of everything DRA released as his copyright for the first 16 albums and more
I always come back to this.
This is certainly the most therapeutic four minutes and ten seconds I’ve ever spent in my life every time I play this song!!
Stunning performance
I hear Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and so many others in his voice and words. Such awesome talent. I'm glad that music is not dead.
I wrote what you hear, and it would follow that you think I’m writing in the same reactionary vein as those two Jews when actually Dylan lifted it’s not dark yet from my intellectual property and I listened to CSsnd Nash, not so much Young

Imagine being that gifted. His albums changed my life. His voice and writing ability. Xo
Effing genius who deserves a Grammy or 3. Good luck Ryan, we LOVE you!
The good ones don't need any awards, we all just know they are great.

Neil Finn looks totally in awe ❤
Doesn't get any better than this!!! Oh My God
I have listened to Ryan Adams for as long as I can remember. Every time I hear a song live, he plays it differently and it reaches out to me a different way. This guy is a musical genius.

this guy is just crazy good! crazy great, in fact.
So amazing. I'm never ready to go.
Ryan Adams has done some great stuff , he plays on the fact that the music industry and media think he is a bit of a "geek" and plays them at their own game because in the end TALENT will shine through....
Agree Roy!!
I can never listen to this once. Its like falling down the rabbit hole. Sublime. I want this version played when I take my last journey. Dancing in the endless moonlight, in the headlights of cars.
Been a fan for years , Ryan is amazing .
my favorite version of all of his acoustical attempts that I have ever seen of this song....absolute crystal....you always surpass Mr. Adams..you really do...thank you
Best version of this song ever. Ryan took this song to a whole new level with this acoustic version.
and of course the sign of a great song is how well it survives when stripped back like this, and here is our evidence - stunning
i'm not sure anyone else here is as blown away as the two older seasoned musicians accompanying him, just look at their faces....
Delta Music amazing right
Damn fine music making here, notice how the other two were awestruck by the power of this song, this man this musician this songwriter.
What a performance. One of my fav acoustic recordings.
That’s just absolutely sublime. You can’t perform a song better than that.
Favorite song on TH-cam!
Is writing comes out of his deep soul it feels like some spirit inside of him that he conjures up this beautiful music and these wonderful lyrics He's one of the best I've seen him alive and he is fantastic
This is the most emotion I have seen put into a song in quite sometime. Brilliant! I keep returning
Ryan Adams is surely a genius. I am playing this song and what appears to be fairly easy to play is actually very difficult - particularly if you want to impart anywhere near the emotion that Ryan achieves.
If this song doesn't pull on your heartstrings then your heart's not beating.
this song hits me soo hard!-we live it ryan
A very haunting version...Ryan knows how to nail it. Killer Guitar too
It amazes me to see these older folks digging Ryan. Specially Neil's face expression like saying: from what planet this guy came from?
Janis and Neil are in shock and awe!!!!
that verse too is one of my all time favs... it always gets me... definitely got Neil there too
Holy frijoles, he is on fire here. Ain't it great how the two other musicians are just a wrapped up in this moment? Look at the love in Janis' eyes. Wow.
Beautiful
Acoustic Ryan is sick. Ridiculously beautiful.
So expressive. Great song. Great performance.
nothing short of a beautiful miracle
This is, without doubt, the single most beautiful thing i've ever heard.
Wow, I've discover this amazing artist today and have been listening to many of his songs. Very impressive and beautiful music and skilled. Some of the prettiest music I've heard in a while. Props to him. Fanastic musician.
My favorite version.
This arrangement and performance is just...wow...
KJ, glad you made it here! This is RA's best work, I think. The BBC sound and visual quality are tremendous. If you see him with his red, white and blue guitar, you can usually count a great performance.
He taps into such beautiful imagery and the songs are like these melon colic classic americana movies.
This guy just kicks my ass every time I see him perform!!! A prolific and incredible songwriter and musician!!!
This is by far my favorite version of this song. Love it.
ryan adams seems to get a lot of other artists who enjoy playing stuff with him...sign of talent
I have tears
amazing lyrics. I love the look on Neil's face during the song. I also love when Ryan gets to a point where the words are barely coming out... almost like a whisper.
The greatest song ever written
After watching more videos of his....it makes this one even more mind blowing! This has to be one of the most beautiful performances ever. The way in which he delivers the words, almost a Mumford n sons kind of acoustic voice but waaay better IMO. Brilliant!
you won't see neil finn jealous of another songwriter very often but that night he shared the stage with someone far superior....
This performance is just so good
+jared musson I was fortunate to attend one of his live concerts last year, unbelievable. One of the most talented musicians of our time.
+Melanie Hill I'd love to see him live
by far his best song! amazing performance... one of the best songs of all time!
My wife was told to play this when I die. First time I heard it I was watching motorcycle videos on TH-cam. I love this song.
So good it's ridiculous. I met Ryan before one of his London shows last year. Cool as shit.
What a great upload and find. Ryan plays this song fast on his other tracks but this version is quite different and good. Thanks.....
its a good feeling . i like to think he knows what his stand out songs are. this is def one
Brilliant, gorgeous, eloquent, and so talented a writer. He's found his niche many times .... I adore him.
I managed to catch a few of these Beeb programmes;MORE please BBC ;Love the rapt way that Neil Finn sits listening;Janis Ian whilst having aged (of course) physically, still has the same voice she had back in the "At seventeen" days - Magic (alll of 'em)

To think of all those years I've paid my TV licence!
WOW! Thank you SO much for posting!!!
Strange when something can sound so hollow yet so full of life.
Where do you land when in the arms of transendence? Oh, its gentle grace. Cut to the chase, one of, if NOT the best of artists of the 21st Century. So blown. So different, ,and sometimes all it took was simply one song. And we speak of balls folks?? Still in a blur, coming up for a breath for air.
i love the old timer he's on the verge of tears, and this song brings me to the same place.
That old timer is the great Janis Ian - and she's a she my friend. They're both great songwriters - no doubt.
hes one of my favorite song writers! Let It Ride - (Ryan Adams Cover)
Inspirational to say the least.
just discovered this video. Thanks for uploading!
“27 years of failures and promises I couldn’t keep”.
Ain’t that the fuckin truth.
Unbelievable 😍

I think they're in awe. Look at Neil around 2:50, and Janis is singing along throughout.

Stunning ✌🏻🤓
thanks mr. adams
love this version
The sound he gets out of that Ol Buck Owens is truly incredible
The album version of this song, and quite often when he performs it live, he does it uptempo and electric. I think it really is a better song done as he did it here. It is a powerful and beautiful song.
