Studio Portraits on the Leica M6

  • In this episode of the Leica Diaries I wanted to try out 3 different portrait scenarios and get a sense of how the Leica M6 would handle each situation. In the video I start off with natural light, then move to photos with constant light, and then add in some motion blur into the portraits. I used the usual suspects of film in Portra 800 and Illord HP5. Both film stocks handled the lighting environments beautifully and I left the shoot much more confident in these shooting situations. I also paired the Leica with two different lenses. The first being the Ziess Plannar 50mm f/2.0 and the second being the Voitglander 35mm f/1.4. I hope you guys enjoy the video and hopefully learn a thing or two from the video. As always feel free to leave a question or comment below. See you in the next video.

Really nice work and great video. It’s refreshing to see someone using a rangefinder camera in a studio setting. Leicas are much more than street cameras. Thank you for sharing.

By the way, completely agree on the 50mm (eq) focal view. It's my go to for portraits. I'm going to say something obnoxious and suggest you should get a second leica with a 50mm lens for easy switching :P

      Thank you for the sub!
and if I am being completely honest I have strongly considered that course of action for months now. Very close to getting that 50mm lens. As for another Leica, we shall see. Can easily see myself getting a digital M body

@@ThomasBocage I have another suggestion that came to me after I saw your video last night: I think it would be a great idea to get a lens adapter so you can put your 35mm voight 1.4 on your X-E4. That way you have an instant manual 50mm eq lens on your digital body. With Focus peaking (high, blue) it's surprisingly easy to focus on the fuji - I think perhaps easier than on a rangefinder although I have no experience with that.
I got my pentax to fuji x adapter from urth last week to use my dads old lenses on my fuji's and it's delightful so far (it brought me to your vid since now I'm looking at manual lenses for professional work, wondering if I could pull it off and to see if it could beat fuji AF). I have yet to find a good 35mm eq lens for this setup.
I'm new to the whole manual focus game but it feels wholesome and I think I could become pretty good at it with the right setup. Very very curious about your 35mm voight for this now.
When it comes to lens adapters you can go nuts in terms of price, especially when the word Leica is involved, but you can also go as low as 20$. It's been on my to-try list for years and I'm glad I finally pulled the trigger because it breathes new life into my hobby photography (I also work professionally but the manual focus is a new hobby for now).

    Thanks for the video.
I like to shoot head & shoulder and tight face shots but my Leica M6 and M10 do not focus close enough. Your video title caught my attention. I was hoping to see more than full-length, ¾ length, half-length, and environmental portraits.
