Thomas Lange was so impressive! I saw him sometimes live, great! In my early years I was allways a Fan from Peter Michael Kolbe, especially since I met him. But the style, the technic from Thomas Lange.....superb!
I have been waiting 20 years to see this race between my three idols, which sets a landmark in the history of sculling (end of the Karppinen-Kolbe era, enter Thomas Lange!). The Italian TV had never broadcast it and I thought I was never bound to see it. Many, many thanks to rowermc! PS I had also never known how close the French sculler had come to K-K: who was it?
Yeah, now I heard. The funny thing is, at first I'd been looking at this in my office, without audio: as soon as I plugged the headphones in, I got all the answers to my questions about Jaanson and Body... :^) I was just too happy to see the 1987 final to remember switching the audio on!
Passionate rowers, but often we are poor historians. Estonia was Russian in 1987. I think this speaks to the amazing longevity of the great Juri Jaanson.
...and 2nd in Athens in the singles as well. Great Yuri Jaanson. Still I suspect this in the video is actually Vassili Yakoucha (or however this should be written sorry to the Russians out there), 2nd in Moscow 1980. PS to rowermc: right, Pascal Body! How could I forget. And he actually closed up on Karppinen in the last 500!
Yes, I checked later: sorry for mistrusting you, Alldali :^) he just looked too dark-haired to me, and too stiff on the back to be him. Very young he must have been (38 in 2004 minus 17). I like Tufte (although not Tufte's technique!), but I was really hoping Jaanson would win in Athens. Maybe because I'm 37 ;^)

Thanks for your comment. The French sculler is Pascal Body, several times finalist in the 80's in 2x, 4x and 1X.

Alldali is right, Yuri Jaanson is the russian sculler in this final.
