The Gauge 1 model railway at Bekonscot Model Village, Bucks.

It's a 10 scale mile model garden railway of 1/32 scale, in a 1/12 scale miniature village. The line was started circa 1929 and has been updated continuously for 80 years. We strapped a camera to the front of one of the engines and sent it off - we've added some subtitles so you can see what you're passing. Model railways rock.
The huge model railway has evolved since those early years, from Bassett-Lowke LNER and GWR outline stock through to modern image British Rail - when at one time, class 47, class 37, Hymek, western class 53, intercity 125 and even DMU stock ran. In the early 1990s, interest in the railway's heritage regained, and it was decided to revert to a classic 1930s appearance. Therefore you'll now see classic GWR railmotors, EMU, GWR 94xx tank locos, LMS Jinty, SR Q Class and many more freelance locos on the route.
The whole system is controlled by computer, interlocked with hundreds of relays for points and signal operation. Note that the signals are missing in this video, as they are currently all being refurbished. The complex trackwork around Maryloo station is controlled by a Westinghouse lever frame in the signal box (where this video begins and ends) when the signalman wants to intervene. This train was preset to run non-stop - but of course would need to stop if another train was in the block ahead of it. This video took four takes to get right - we had to be nimble with the manual signals to make sure no trains ahead of this one stopped progress, or made it wait on the single track sections! Usually there are 9 to 11 trains in operation at any one time; a selection of them are seen on this video. Perhaps we should get a Thomas The Tank Engine for the line...?

I used to visit Bekonscot as a child in the 1960s, and always wondered what it would be like to be shrunken down and ride on this railway. Now I know! Absolutely brilliant video, especially on a big screen!

I love Bekonscot - I used to go as a child in the 70s, and I recently had the pleasure of taking my son there and observing the same joy in him that I felt at his age (and still do!). This is amazing footage - I'm not sure I have the words for how much I love this!

This popped up in my recommendations feed. I'm so glad it did, this was my favourite place to visit as a child and every child that reacted with joy and excitement at the sight of the trains going by was exactly how I reacted. Now I'm 31 and hope to some day soon have children of my own to bring to this timeless place. Thank you for this nostalgia trip.
I fell off that first bridge when I was 5 ( no high sides then ) and got track oil on my “ Lego builders club “ t shirt in 1977. Still love trains !

Was taken there as child in 1960's, took our birth children there in 1980's, taken our foster-children there 2017 - still love it as much as 55yrs ago. Wonderful to see different perspective...
Loved it. I went there as a small boy of 3yrs old in 1970 for the first time and many more times after and with my own children. Many happy memories. Thank you.
I don't know howmany times I have watched this particular video, but I feel like a kid again [cute trick, I'm 65] and I'm not sure which is more enjoyable, the 'ride' on the train, or the expressions on the young ones faces when they see the train coming. And I don't mean just the little ones, the 'adults' are just as thrilled by them.

Thank you folks for your appreciation of my passion for trains, similar to yours .when as a kid I was asked what I wanted to become pat came my reply a engine e driver. I was so impressed by the Anglo-Indian drivers with burnished brass peek caps pocket watch, and making the big sign of the cross before they started the journey. J C moral.

Absolutely Fantastic. Except for the 1 to 1 scale people it is like riding a real train. Beautiful job of landscaping, buildings and small details. Trackwork and ballast is also excellent. A real pleasure to view and get ideas from. THANK YOU for sharing
Amazing! Second only to the Wunderland in Germany I think. Amazed you could get your trains to run 10 scale models without derailing or hitting a bad spot electrically. It must take a huge amount of work to maintain it with all the plants growing, gophers digging, ants getting squished on the track, etc. Hats off to you!

All I can say is wow!!! So realistic! Even the scraping of the tree branches against the train is realistic. I know because I used to drive the local train here in Cleveland. I was amazed at how many spring switches your line has though. LOL!!! Excellent video and a fantastic set up!!!!

Happy to have discovered this video, and layout. An old train lover I am, and appreciate all of the hard, dedicated work involved. Train buffs enjoy what you have. Ignore the negatives you get. All these people who nag and complain would do better to appreciate all the hard work and effort that has been out into this for the pleasure of all who visit Bekonscot - I first visited this layout over 40 years ago and back then it was a relatively smaller set up -- so I must go back and visit again - it is amazing !

Bekonscot the original Miniature Wunderland!! Always a delight to visit, a short trip from Marylebone to Beaconsfield and you are in a lovely slice of England, I would be more than happy to move about snipping away the foliage--better still have the envious job of running those little trains, a dream job! Fantastic video. Brought back memories of the 1970s when I used to go here with a friend. It meant two bus rides and a mile walk from the old Saracens Head pub. Great to see the children react when they see the trains coming hasn't changed...and probably never will :)

My last visit to The World, was Christmas 2019, with the lights on everywhere. The Lockdown for two years, illness and, finally, I had to give my Motability car back. I could get there, using my current Scooterpac Cabin Car. To Bekonscot, from Ruislip, in a little car, 4mph on the pavements, and 9mph on the road, would take around 5 hours, via Ruislip, Ickenham, Long Lane, Hillingdon, Uxbridge, out to Denham, and all the way on the A40. The car would require recharging while there, with me using my crutches, and then at least another 5 hours to get home. I used to go at least twice every year, and I do so miss it.
Visited today, and had this idea. Wow already been done, what a treat. My son would love to see this with a modern Go pro / image quality etc. Happy to lend mine to have the privilege. Fantastic !

Remember visiting Bekonscot firstly as an 8 year old and then when I was 18. Still an amazing place even for adults though the trains seem to be different every time I visited :o)

I used to love visiting this place as a child, but was always tantalised by the 'behind the scenes' parts of the operation that we couldn't see, and moreover had a suspicion that behind the peripheral hedges were many more miles of miniture track and a whole other secret wonderful world.
Lived in Ruislip for 28 years and never visited. My loss. Absolutely superb.

My mum retold the story of my first visit and the look on my face when one of the trains went under a bridge beneath me. Probably very much like some of the happy children there. Hopefully I'll visit soon!
Quite frankly, suggesting that people alight for connecting trains when you don't even stop is downright dangerous. And who are all those giants?

No, that's a good speed for a model or real railway, (top speed, that is) they shouldn't have a problem if they maintain it well enough.

I first heard of Bekonscot in 1974 when a schoolfriend went there on a family trip to the U.K. This is a great clip of a great rail layout in a great miniature village, but I do wish TH-cam would stop recommending it to me over and over.

Watching this in VR is really Amazing. After a couple of minutes you really feel like you are that small and people are that big to you. Like you are really riding the train.
Largest model railway I've ever seen... the fine detail is amazing. First time I've seen a view from a cam on the engine too.
