We as Bharatiya should support Tibetian Independence. Not only have the Chinese occupied this holy land illegally but we have a moral duty to support our brother buddhists. Besides its a buffer against the aggressive behaviour of the Chinese towards us.
I am in full support of your ideas.

Jai Shri Ram. So true. Tibet's Independence is India's security. As India never share border with China in the past till 1949-1959. We Tibetans are thankful to you for bringing Tibet's issue and solving Tibet's issue has a KEY to solve India's border issue with China for forever.

Thank you Lt Gen Shankar for your well researched piece. There was no time any of the Chinese, Mongol or Manchu rulers have ever taken over Tibet. It was made impossible by the tyranny of distance and the mountains that no army could over come. However, the communists were victorious in the Chinese civil war and were confident to wage war on Tibet with military help from the USSR. Even so, they sought the forced consent of independent Tibet by coercing Tibet to sign the so called “17 point treaty” between the Government of Tibet and the PRC. They recognised Tibet as a seperate country from China by adding mischievously “returning to the mother land”!!!!!! It clearly showed Tibet was seperate from China and the draft was crafted by the CCP itself!!!!
The trickle of Tibetan refugee from occupied Tibet was curbed by the PRC by pumping millions of dollars to Nepal to train its police and installing police station on the Nepal side of the Tibet-Nepal border. Tibetans want to escape from occupied Tibet more than the waves of Chinese escaping PRC through Ecuador to Mexico and to the US. Tibetans can’t escape because of severe restriction by the PRC on the Tibet-Nepal border. Even when Tibetans make it to the Nepali side, the Nepali police who are paid handsomely by the Chinese deport them instantly to get their reward from the Chinese communists! India must stand for Tibet and support the movement by having more recognition of the exile Government. It should invite Tibetan parlimentaries to meet face to face with Indian parliamentarians. It should also speak up for Tibet in international arena whenever the opportunity arises. Kublai Khan didn’t rule Tibet! He converted to Buddhism and took Choegyal Phakpa as his preceptor. When he received a holy initiation on Heyvajra, he offered Tibet to Choegyal Phakpa and Choegyal Phakpa ruled Tibet. This is how the Sakya Lama rule was introduced in Tibet and in fact this is how Lama rule in Tibet was first introduced!

Agreed but India has no moral obligation as such to help us. Even in individual life of a person can’t be brought to happiness unless he or she wants it the most. Not India should rather India could in this present situations. We should be one as the general had emphasised repeatedly. Take an example of Indian themselves. We can learn lot from their struggle of independence.

    • @user-vy8mp5sv7b
      @user-vy8mp5sv7b หลายเดือนก่อน

@@kungagyaltsen2839 Tibet for India is not a question of moral obligation! It’s national security! Before the Chinese illegal occupation of Tibet in 1949/50, India never had any danger emanating from Tibet for centuries!!! Tibet was a Buddhist nation of peace and tranquility. We looked to India as the holy land (Arya Bhumi). But once Tibet was occupied by communist China, troubles started immediately which culminated in the Chinese invasion of India in 1962 and occupation of Aksai Hind! Anybody with a brain as small as that of a midget will know that an independent Tibet is the ONLY WAY TO SECURE INDIA’S NORTHERN BORDER WITH TIBET. It a historical fact that TIBET WAS A BUFFER STATE between India and China which kept India secure and peace in Asia! The British rulers of India NEVER RECOGNISED CHINESE SOVEREIGNTY OVER TIBET! They knew that any hostile power in Tibet would jeopardise British India’s security!!! Unfortunately, Independent India’s leaders were too eager to go to bed with the wily Chinese communists and endorsed Chinese baseless claims over Tibet to cozy with the Chinese communists! Now you can see the Himalayan blunder playing out between China and India in the Himalayas with endless incursions, encroachments, salami slicing of Indian territory and clashes between troops as we saw in Galwan and having to spent billions of dollars for infrastructure and retain 90,000 troops all across Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal, Sikkim and Ladakh! TO REINSTATE INDEPENDENT TIBET AS THE HISTORICAL BUFFER STATE IS IN THE BEST INTEREST OF INDIA, CHINA AND WHOLE OF ASIA FOR PEACE AND PROSPERITY!!! WITHOUT IT SOONER OR LATER, WAR IS LIKELY TO BREAK OUT SINCE COMMUNIST CHINA IS CLAIMING MORE AND MORE INDIAN TERRITORY SUCH AS ARUNACHAL PRADESH AND LADAKH! India will be FORCED TO GO TO WAR to defend its territory!

This funny word Suzerainty was coined by the British Raj in India. The explanation of this funny word Suzerainty, is China has claim over Tibet but has no control over Tibet and this word remained until the end of the British rule in India. Our Tibetan King Songtsen Gambo has two wifes, first and elder Queen Balsa was princess of Nepal and the second Queen was a Chinese princess, we Tibetans called Gyalsa. Both Princess each brought with them the Statue of Buddha but the Buddhism came to Tibet from India and not as the Chinese say it came from China. But it is true that Buddhism first came to China before it came to Tibet. Thank you Shankar sab for bringing such topic on Tibet to the Indian public. 🙏🙏🙏

This is a heavy hitting and much needed episode. Though gen.Ravishankar has previously advised for India to have "strategic patience", this episode underlines the necessity to act on policy on a priority basis.
The level of insights need to be appreciated about the demographic spread of Tibetan allegiances w.r.t to freedom vs indifference vs co-opting ccp. It is a complex scenario indeed!! Bottomline is, this is upto Tibetan people and external actors including Bharat would have to defer to original (uninfluenced) interests of Tibetan people for eternal peace in the region. Independent Tibet helped with this peace for 100s of years and it shall continue. Bharat failed (and probably did not have the might) to act when ccp occupied Tibet. Hopefully the time to correct that wrong will come soon and Tibetan people with help from others would be ready to act to be free.
Thanks for another insightful episode sir.

India's support for Tibet is highly valued. Whether it's providing refuge or acknowledging the small land area, India has played its part as a Dharma teacher. Tibet expressed its gratitude by offering heavy gold and other precious stones to the Indian government when His holiness first arrived. I know that isn’t much for what India has done for Tibetans. India need not fear war, as Tibetans are willing to sacrifice themselves for their ally. Despite not being fully literate or having modern power, Tibetans possess sincerity and patience. Notably, revered Tibetan masters like Shanta Rakshita, Shanti Deva, Nagarjuna, and Arya Deva are all Indians. I admire India for its sincere and honest approach.

Respected Shankar sir. I want to say that from mid 6th century to 7th century period of king Songtsen Gampo, he sent Tibetan scolars to India for relationship and Buddhist philosophy. Tibet made relationship with India century before, but I think India failed to respond to Tibet, because India was struggling themselves under British. As you said those all are history, but now India is one of the super power of the world. India can now help Tibet as being a teacher from history. Many Tibetan wants to come to India, but China shoot at side while the Tibetan crossing the borders to India. Tibetan will never obey China, don't worry about that. Tibet needs more supporters like India to free Tibet. I think other countries are benefitting from China for cheap goods which are most stole from Tibet. Tibet was and still is a rich in resources like rivers for electricity and many natural resources. You said Tibetan are getting some developments from China. Imagine if China couldn't occupied Tibet then Tibet surely make continue relationship with India and India and Tibet both benefit a lot and much more developed. In the end all Tibetan want freedom, but Tibet is not capable to start war against China, because of our religion. That's why Dalai Lama is trying to solve through dialog and free Tibet.

A very thought provoking, well researched and realistic talk.
A few thoughts (albeit highly imaginative but still in realm of possibility)
    1. It is clear that a gradual change will not bring independence to Tibet. Only an intense incident can give Tibet independence
    2. What can the sudden, intense event be (mostly likely external)
    a. Most likely would be a Muslim-world backed liberation of Xin Jiang riding on which Tibet can get independence
    b. If a violent independence movement takes place in China, the world can exploit the chaos to wrench out Tibet, Xin Jiang and Manchuria
    c. A nuclear attack by China on any country, followed by a massive retaliatory attack by the the US and allies. Like Japan in 1945, China will be forced to cede Xinjiang, Tibet and Manchuria as settlement.
    3. If China becomes democratic, wry likely on the basis of return to Buddhist roots, the 1988 Dalai Lama’s Middle Path proposal would possibility be implemented hoping for a realisation of Independent Tibet at a later date.
    4. You are very right that modernisation and passing of time, is diluting the concept of Buddhist Tibet.
    5. There is no traction for Buddhist nationalism. India should take initiate the revival of the concept of Buddhist nationhood and nationalism.
    6. Looks like at this point of time true autonomy seems the most probable situation
    7. Like one of the viewer question. The Dalai Lama is the biggest rallying point for Tibet and sadly he is a mortal

How about a world wide boycott of Chinese goods until they vacate occupied Tibet ? Similar to anti-apartheid movement

@@ramrao668 Has too happen. We had Piyush Goel saying at business meet that Indian businessmen on see profit. Even if Chinese goods are 5% cheaper they will buy Chinese. Most or many goods in Amazon etc are Chinese. The country of origin is never displayed prominently. It is in some small print. Like burning a house to drive out a rat. To unseat the ruling party our politicians are even ready to sleep with our enemies. Nationalists are branded as Fascists.

In short, Govt is doing all it can to move away from China within the allowable limits of WTO and other world bodies. The citizens should also join in the effort to reduce the China dependence to strengthen the Governments effort. We need have citizens’ Nationalism in Commerce and Economy also. South Korea and Japan are the best examples.

Your topic on Tibet' freedom no dought is literally and beautifully analysed. History reflects nobody is ever powerful and no country remains permanently powerful. Everything will get changed according to existing situation and circumstances. Anyway, very nice analysis on Tibet's liberty. Thank you for focussing past, present and future situation.

There is also one angle left. Between us and Tibet, countries like Nepal and Bhutan is also there supporting tibetian refugees. Freedom movement will definitely ignite from there.

Thank you Gen. Shankar for a wonderful insightful session on Tibet. It resonates much with what I have been thinking for some time now.
The time has come for Indians to act on it. Some thoughts
    1. Have Centres of Tibetan studies in atleast some universities - preferably Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata - some of the oldest ones in India. We know so little about Tibet. The Tibetan Govt in exile must pursue this with Govt of India. There are two confucious institutes still active in India - one in Mumbai, and one in Manipal, I think. (on a side note, those need to be closed down. We can learn mandarin from Taiwan)
    2. For all maps published in India, or shown in India, especially on mobile apps, all Tibetan places must show Tibetan/Indian names, in Tibetan language. Right now they show Chinese names in Mandarin for Tibetan places. Eg. Manassarovar and Rakshas Tal show up with some Chinese name on Google Maps. So also for places in Tibet right opposite Nathu La. This is unacceptable. Govt of India can, and must enforce this. We, the people, must demand it.
    3. Buddhism went from India to Tibet. I'm guessing Tibetans would love to visit Buddhist centres in India, so we need to promote that.
    4. Tibetan Govt in Exile must do more to promote Tibetan festivals, culture in India. Let the Indian people know. At the same time, they should be publish more articles and documentaries of how the CCP is repressing Tibetans in Tibet.
