Great video. I purchased a Light Phone II in 2020, and I sadly lost it after a few months. I've been living vicariously through other LPII owners ever since.
Thank you for your videos. I'm a retired systems engineer and like devices ... that work well without unneeded 'frills'. Last month, I ordered a Light Phone 3 and looking forward to delivery in early 2025 ! .... Jose, Keep up the good work !
Great review as always, thank you. I have had my LP2 for over 2 years now. I use it on the weekends and such. I have looked at other devices, but I keep coming back to the LP2. Only thing on my "wish list" would be better map and perhaps Uber app
Thanks for mentioning what phone plan you use! I have heard other Light users use US Mobile and have been wanting to switch to a different phone company and knowing that this is what you use helped me know it is a good one. Just switched!
You definitely won't regret that switch. I've had US Mobile for a few years now, and I've never had a single problem with it. From what I recall, it runs off of Verizon's towers, so the coverage is fantastic for such a cheap plan!
@@GovernorRP thank you for letting me know! I switched a few weeks ago and it's good so far! Nice to know that you've had it for a few years and it's been good!
I've had it for a bit more than a year and a half. I think calls, sms, contacts, alarm, hotspots and podcasts are my go to features. Directory, directions, calculator and notes are welcomed but not crucial to me. The only thing I really would need is uber but given the battery I wonder if a single day of use with two uber rides would kill it. I got a unihertz jelly 2 just to have uber on it that I carry with me when I need to go out so... I now live life through my senses not relying on pictures/camera to live the moment at a later time when all connection to the place and time has been lost. I still use my xperia 10 II flashed to Sailfish OS which I use pretty much as a lightphone plus uber... but I so like how small and incapable of distractions the lp2 is as compared to my x10II SFOS. Cheerios from Costa Rica.
Dear Jose, I have had it for two years and hope that the company's latest compromise does not go any further than the LPIII. I am thoroughly satisfied with the LPII. I have a smartphone for Telegram that stays at home. The company should have really thought about making the LPII more accessible (to other countries and languages) instead of developing LPIII to increase sales.
Had it for a year now. A lot more expensive than your average dumbphone, but I don't regret it at all! I see it as a long term investment. The only issue I have is that directions almost never works for me. Always goes into offline mode automatically. But I don't use it that much so it's alright for now
Also, I have three wireless subscriptions with US Mobile ... for $ 5 a month. My wireless usage is basic voice, some sms text messages, calendar, and occasionally maps or directions. My experience with US Mobile (for longer than a year ) has been very good. Great prices !
I really like your review of this phone and have been seriously considering switching to the light phone. Do you think it's worth getting the light phone 2 now or waiting for the light phone 3 to come out?
I love my phone 2! You’re the reason why I got it! It’s my 2nd light as I lost the first one. Also would you haven to have a discount code for their website I need a light phone new case 😅 and I always search for those discount codes b4 I purchase anything….lol jw
hi jose, great video!did you have the same phone during your 5 years? (battery still ok?) or did you have to buy multiple light phone ii during these 5 years? (or does light phone replace batteries?)
I had one LP2 for 4 years and then I gave it to a friend. Then, I bought the white version and have had that for the past year. The battery kept up on my black LP2 until year 4 where it started to deplete a bit faster. Still a 2 day battery life phone though, so impressive for a little device.
Would you be willing to walk us through the process of getting this phone set up with a U.S. mobile number and plan? light phone is not listed as one of their device options, and set up videos are showing activation through an App, which the LP2 doesn’t have.
It’s all done through the website. The app is only needed when using eSIM. Buy a physical SIM and when you do the activation through the website, they tell you the next steps for their onboarding.
Would you be comfortable using this as a main phone when hiking or in a low-service area? I'm wondering if there's a better option for me in emergency situations where my phone needs to work no matter what.
It would have been great but some say it works on some UK networks and others say it doesn’t and some even say it has bad call quality so not worth the risk for me, maybe the Mudita Kompakt will be good 😊
fucking finally! a good review. might i suggest for your audio, using dolby's free program? funny enough i only used it through my iphone, but i would imagine theres a solid basic program on the computer. easy to use, really polishes up sound.
Hello Jose! what will I see on LP2 screen if someone sends me: 1) a photo 2) a printscreen. I am thinking about LP2 because Nokia C3-01 that I am using sometimes irritates people I talk to on this phone because the connection gets worse sometimes.
Yeah weird it doesn't work here, I got the Punkt MP02 a couple years ago and it works but does not work with Volte calling on any carrier, I just bought a Sonim XP5 plus through bell a couple months ago its great call quality is way better and coverage is also greatly improved over the Punkt phone
What is the gps like? Is it like google maps? I ride my motorcycle and go places and get lost for fun. I want to get away from social media and everything. I only want to call, text, have a calendar, and a gps. Other than that i am going to order one on Sunday. I just hope the GPS is good. Thanks in advance for anyone who replies.
GPS struggled a lot in the first 3 years. They have been fixing it since last year. They currently have 1 update that should fix it 95% and make it very reliable. But they haven't pushed that update. I hope they release it soon 😀
If those are the features you need, that's fine. The Nokia's available in the US don't have reliable messages or podcasts. I want those two features so I that's why I went with the LP2 back in the day.
I do appreciate the content and philosophy of these videos, but IMHO the smartphone/dumbphone discussion incorrectly puts the emphasis on the wrong area. All technology is, by default, dumb. It's the manner in which users use the technology that makes any particular technology smart or dumb. You can use technology mindfully, or mindlessly. "Dumbphone" vrs. "smartphone" is just a marketing ploy to sell another piece of technology someone has created. My Google Pixel 7 is just as dumb or as smart as I want it to be. I believe in and practice minimalist approaches to life, but again it's my opinion that the responsibility for having a minimalist life starts with the user. More emphasis should be placed on improving human behavior rather than inventing more technology. Every phone comes with a button that immediately makes it dumb - an off switch.
I have made videos about this device for 5 years and covered it from different angles, livestreams, and other videos. You insinuating this is a paid ad is laughable.
Now this is how one should review these kind of devices, not just for a month of use.
I wish I could do the same with every device tbh. I do updates on the best I've found every so often ☺️
@@JoseBriones More power to you, Sir..
Thank u
If it's only out for a month you can't really review it for a longer time though...

Hoping for that too!
why he need it?

LED backlighting has been shown to be addictive in conjunction with smart phone use.
So the e-ink screen helps to disengage from those temptations.
I really like your review of this phone and have been seriously considering switching to the light phone. Do you think it's worth getting the light phone 2 now or waiting for the light phone 3 to come out?
It would be best to wait for the LP3. However, if you can find a used LP2 for about $200-230 I’d go for that.
I love my phone 2! You’re the reason why I got it! It’s my 2nd light as I lost the first one. Also would you haven to have a discount code for their website I need a light phone new case 😅 and I always search for those discount codes b4 I purchase anything….lol jw
If only the LP2 was compatible in my country. Anyway, the LP3 happens to be compatible with mine, so I for one am looking forward to considering it.

I'm replying here to see what he says. I want to know as well.

how do you deal with banking apps? have you ever been in a situation where you needed access to your bank but couldnt?
I always carry my bank card with me on my wallet. I've never had an issue about payment. Is that what you mean?
Only problem I had with it was it would die in a day, when not even using it, hope the battery is better in the new one

Hello there. Question? I tried to download the free music pack from lightphone, added the music tool however, did not add to lp2. any ideas?
Thank you brooo
Hi! Does the calendar have the ability to sync? Thanks!
Yes. It syncs with Google or Apple calendars as of now.
I used to have a one. Just having the sim card inserted drains the battery like you wouldnt believe
Would you be comfortable using this as a main phone when hiking or in a low-service area? I'm wondering if there's a better option for me in emergency situations where my phone needs to work no matter what.
I wouldn't. I recommend a satellite phone from Garmin.
Get this and then also a Garmin In-reach, which is I think like $10/month for plan. Used them in the wilderness to text.
It would have been great but some say it works on some UK networks and others say it doesn’t and some even say it has bad call quality so not worth the risk for me, maybe the Mudita Kompakt will be good 😊
What is the podcasts and music connected to? Their own program or maybe Spotify?
Music is all whatever mp3 you send via the dashboard. Podcasts is their own app with the index from Apple I believe.
Have they said how long it will get updates
Until it can't anymore essentially.

Not available in Canada so for five years, I've been frustrated. "Gee, thanks Lightphone."
