I attended Space Camp in the summer of 1984 and remember the buzz about this. Filming hadn’t started yet, but the employees were all excited that a movie was being made about the place. I’ve never watched it all the way through (not avoiding it intentionally, I just haven’t had the chance), but I remember seeing certain scenes and thinking, “that’s not at all what it’s like.” And after seeing the clip in this video, I don’t know if the scene with Joaquin Phoenix in the bunk room with the older guy is one of those “young kid sneaks in to hang with the much older kids” plot points, but we were split up into 2 age groups: kids who had already completed at least a year of high school, and those of us who hadn’t started it yet. I was going to be a freshman that fall, so I was in the younger group, and we didn’t get the cool blue suits or get to do all the simulations. I’m not sure if they did this for the high schoolers, but we were also subdivided into teams named after the planets and the sun and moon, and each team had a different colored visor. Of course I wound up on team Uranus, and whoever assigned the visor colors must have thought it was hilarious to give us the color brown, so we were constantly having “yer-anus is brown!” yelled out at us.
Part of the movie plot is that Max (Joaquin Phoenix) was a smart gifted student in school and Kevin (Tate Donavan) makes an offhand comment of Max having a 180 IQ to imply the kid was really smart. The scene where the team first assemble to receive their mission assignments from Andy and she sees Max, he begs her to let him stay with the older kids because he had already gone through "Junior Camp" the two previous summers. This movie made me want to go to Space Camp, just like Real Genius and Revenge of the Nerds wanted to make me go to college, but like all 80s movies, it was all lies.😛
Sts 51 launch the Space shuttle columbia in January 28,1986. The 7 astronauts was launching in the Space shuttle columbia 51. Then the Space shuttle columbia 51 explode in the sky. Space Camp movie in June 6,1986 and the Space Camp movie in the dvd. The Space Camp movie were for 7 astronauts.Sts-107 launch in January 16 2003 with 7 astronauts and the Space shuttle was launching in the Space. Now in February 1,2003. When the 7 astronauts were heading to earth. Sts-107 columbia Space shuttle has the hole left of the wing. When the 7 astronauts were heading to earth at 9:00am. There were a lot fire on the Space shuttle columbia and pilot astronauts were were worried. Later Space shuttle turned over then explode and the smoke line was going to the air to the ground. And the 7 astronauts were killed in the Sts-107 columbia Space shuttle. Hope the Space Camp 2 movie for 7 astronauts again.
Revenge of the Nerds, Space Camp and Flight of The Navigator are some of my favourite movies of all time. So many memories with these. :).............. OH AND Night of the Comet!
I absolutely loved Spacecamp as a kid, I have such fond memories of hiring it out on VHS (!) & Wishing I was Max riding that space shuttle into orbit! I still consider it one of the the greatest kids movies from the 80's. Loved it
I was seven when the Challenger disaster happened, and I watched it live. I didn't fully understand what had happened at the time, but later grew to appreciate the gravity of what I had witnessed.
I was in middle school, turning twelve, when the Challenger exploded. I can still remember my Principle bursting into tears, over the loud speaker, as she told us to assemble in the library. On the lighter side, I love this movie! All of these films that Minty reviews remind me of what an amazing decade I grew up in! PS: This is probably obvious, but I forgot to mention that the reason all classrooms were assembling in the library is so we could watch the sad news together.
I watched it go up in flames while I was at home for my first broken femur. 150+ broken bones later I still remember watching it go up in flames. And later they crew cab flying off and knowing that they fell so far and died when they hit the water just makes it so much worse. They survived the initial boom yet didn't survive when they hit the water.
Howard the Duck is still one of my favorite movies. I think a lot of people tried to take the film too seriously. And let's face it, how can anyone complain about a scantily clad Lea Thompson?
Joaquin is his birth name but all his siblings had nature names and he felt left out so that’s why he gave himself the name Leaf. After awhile he felt better about just being himself and started using Joaquin again. Also, one of Tate’s films that you forgot to mention is Love Potion No.5 with Sandra Bullock. I’m so glad you did a video on this movie. It’s always been one of my favorites.
Space Camp I loved this movie. The idea of being a kid getting sent into space. To a astronaut so cool of an idea especially when I was a kid. Great job Minty!
Honestly, I was more interested in the camp aspect than the accidentally getting into space. And now I have finally gone, and I'm already planning to go again ^_^
Two minor corrections: Not every space shuttle is Challenger, and in the case of this movie, Challenger does not make an appearance. The launch footage featured in the film is from mission STS-51J, which was the maiden flight of the space shuttle Atlantis. It was not footage of a launch of the Challenger. The poster which featured a picture of a launching shuttle was also not the Challenger. The picture used in the poster is the launch of STS-2, flown by the space shuttle Columbia. Even when you cannot see the name of the orbiter clearly, each shuttle has some very unique markings and tile patterns not shared by the other shuttles, which make them easily identifiable if you know what to look for. Only Atlantis and Endeavour had virtually identical markings and tile patterns, but Endeavour had not yet been built when this movie was made.
Plus, regarding the poster, only the first two shuttle missions painted the ET white. After that, they stopped painting it due to weight savings. So any (unaltered) photo of a shuttle launch with a white ET is one of the first two missions and has the Columbia orbiter. (Note that I said photos of a shuttle _launch_ . I think the Enterprise and maybe even the Challenger may have been mounted on the ET for tests during development. The Enterprise was a test orbiter and, among other things, was released from the 747 for landing tests. The Challenger also began as a test vehicle, and it was actually older than Columbia, but wasn't converted to a fully operational orbiter (and named) until after Columbia had flown.)
I was a little younger when I saw it, but I still love it in my 40's as well. Plus now I can also say that I have finally attended the real life SpaceCamp as well. And no, I did not expect to be launched into space on accident, LOL But it was a wonderful experience, and I not only recommend it, but also plan on going again ^_^
"performed poorly in the theater, but found its second life on the home video market" is a phrase that has been said time, and time, and time again about so many movies from that era. Eventually you'd think that they would start planning for that, rather than basing everything on just the box office.
As a Chicagoan and movie admirer, I have a high regard for Roger Ebert. Before his death, I have seen him walk back on his previous harsh reviews and I believe he would do the same for this.
OMG I loved this movie when I was a kid and being a huge space exploration fan. I so empathized with Max's quip that set the entire movie into motion "I wish I could just go into space" or something along that line. It's been a few years since I have seen the movie. But that single line spoke to me so much cause it stated how bad I myself wanted to go up.

I really can get why marketing this movie was hard. Since the civilian, Christa McCauliffe, was a teacher, all of the schools had teachers who had tried out for the position. Space Camp was also being promoted heavily on children's network Nickelodeon, even being offered as a grand prize on a popular game show called Double Dare. Therefore, I would say, almost every classroom had the space launch showing live in their class. Only to see it explode live on TV. The kids had such a hard time with it that some children TV programs addressed it to help kids cope. I specifically remember an episode of a show called Punky Brewster that featured the main character witnessing the explosion in her class and following how she emotionally dealt with the issue. This should have been shelved with a delayed release.
I was in middle school when Challenger exploded. Didn't go outside to watch the launch like we usually did. We had a NASA assembly that morning. The models were soo cool. Not a day I'll ever forget. Was also at KSC the day Columbia didn't land. Very creepy day, so many people yet quiet. Love this movie. RIP Tish
I was a teenager in the 80's and watched both the challenger disaster and the movie. Thinking back they could have pushed release back for a year and rework a few scenes to insert the challenger disaster as a motive. That would have made a big difference. It was a very difficult time and a national tragedy akin to losing a president. It never knew it lost money but the movie was pretty good for me. Thanks Minty. This is my favorite movie from the 80's. I saw it in 29 Palms, Ca at the Drive in theater. I begged my parents to see it as we were right across the bay when the Challenger launched and exploded. I'll be honest every time I see an image of a shuttle launch, I get tears. At this movie it was bad being so soon after the disaster. But I absolutely love the movie.
Had the hots for Lea Thompson back in the 80's when I was a teen. She had that "girl next door" look about her, as did my real life girlfriend at the time.
I was born in 1974. The Challenger tragedy was the first personal/nation wide tragedy I experienced as a child. I begged my parents to take me to see Space Camp on opening day. And the Challenger was always in the back of my mind. But, when Space Camp came to HBO, I taped it and watched it religiously every other day.
I had no idea that the Challenger was the shuttle pictured in the movie. We watched the Challenger disaster live in school...The last time we ever watched any live TV in school. Thanks again for another great episode.

I had totally forgotten that the movie came out after the Challenger disaster. Looking back I think the movie was a great tribute to the spirit of space exploration. Through there is great danger, there is also great rewards and knowledge to be gained. My thoughts and prayers for the families and friends of those lost to the great endeavor of the exploration of space.
I remember seeing this in the movie theater -- AND, I also remember feeling a bit weird about it, given that we had seen the Challenger explosion live in our grade school Science classroom just a few months earlier.
One of my favorite movies of all time, for sure. And pretty damn scary for a "kids" movie! That woman with the three fingers on one hand scared the SHIT out of me and haunted my nightmares for weeks after seeing it for the first time. And then there was that scene where the guy was literally HUNTING down a kid on the San Antonio Riverwalk -- with the intent to kill.

The movie as good as it is always made me think that it was always a ploy intended as a way for NASA to encourage kids into astronomy and all the science NASA studies through entertainment purposes. Also I never realized that was actually Phoenix in that movie.

I loved the movie when it first came out. Back then I collected almost every newspaprer article I could find about the Challenger accident, which ended with the "Back in Space" front page news. Also, check the movie "Meteor" with Sean Connery back in 1979. The spaceship that gets destroyed in the beginning, is named "Challenger II".
I live close to Space Camp!! It's part of the US Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville, AL. I worked there summers during college and then in the art department after my degree. My best friend was an extra - he said Leah Thompson was not very pleasant to be around. Watching your review no I know why - 6 months! It was really fun to work there and see and meet people behind the scenes. One time I got to put on a space suit and played a practical joke on a fellow employee - I stayed completely still in the suit when he came in and then a few moments later came to life and went right at him :() I can see the Saturn 1 rocket from my front yard - can I add pictures to a post? For people wondering how and why Williams scored this, he had an opening in his schedule when Spielberg's musical of Peter Pan fell apart and his friend - Fox music head Lionel Newman - told him about this project and he came onboard to do it and ended up having the main theme for the movie reused for decades after as trailer music for other films

This was cute; back in the days of believing that kids could fly a space shuttle with one adult. Then there’s that simple landing of a “flying brick”. Today, they’d shoot it down before letting a bunch of kids take it to space. But, nostalgia.

I love this movie. I didn't see it in theatres, but I did see it on HBO multiple times. I first heard "Forever Man" - and that's one reason I watched it. :) As to the Challenger disaster, I remember exactly where I was when that happened. I don't think I'll ever forget. Despite that shadow, it's a fun movie.

Little-known fact: the scene where Lea Thompson is in the multi-axis trainer has her trying to "stabilize" it with a joystick. The problem is, that's not what the MAT is for, and the joystick was a fake one. You can't stabilize it - the whole point is to acclimate you to being disoriented.

My favorite memory is going to visit Space Camp (the facility, though I wanted to, I never attended the actual camp as a student). A bunch of teens were trying and failing to work the MMU simulator. I got on and was basically Anakin Skywalker, LOL, flying to the destination in a short amount of time. Got a "captain" designation, IIRC. The looks on the faces of the teens who mocked me as I got on were priceless. I had no training whatsoever and I pwned them good. :)

It was the boom of cocaine distribution in the 70s and 80s that directly lead to the merchandising wars of 1980s saturday morning cartoons that made each new series a bona-fide, marketable, toyetic rollercoaster ride of 22-minute advertisements that rocked kid's socks every afternoon after school and saturday morning. Then, when the production companies of the 80s cartoons ran out of coke in the mid90s, they had no choice but to switch to meth by the 2000s. Minty! Do Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon. It's literally the best movie ever made. Also, the Matrix basically ripped off the story and turned it into a sci fi film.
Didn't I recommend this on one of your latest videos? I can't remember but the timing is hard to ignore. You always seem to put out videos of movies that I haven't thought about in years and it's always you that reminds me everytime just by association of other movies of the era. As a Chicagoan and movie admirer, I have a high regard for Roger Ebert. Before his death, I have seen him walk back on his previous harsh reviews and I believe he would do the same for this.
OMG I loved this movie when I was a kid and being a huge space exploration fan. I so empathized with Max's quip that set the entire movie into motion "I wish I could just go into space" or something along that line. It's been a few years since I have seen the movie. But that single line spoke to me so much cause it stated how bad I myself wanted to go up.

I really can get why marketing this movie was hard. Since the civilian, Christa McCauliffe, was a teacher, all of the schools had teachers who had tried out for the position. Space Camp was also being promoted heavily on children's network Nickelodeon, even being offered as a grand prize on a popular game show called Double Dare. Therefore, I would say, almost every classroom had the space launch showing live in their class. Only to see it explode live on TV. The kids had such a hard time with it that some children TV programs addressed it to help kids cope. I specifically remember an episode of a show called Punky Brewster that featured the main character witnessing the explosion in her class and following how she emotionally dealt with the issue. This should have been shelved with a delayed release.

Space Camp, Vertical Limit, Night of the Comet are some of my favorite movies from the 80s. Great decade!
I was in middle school when Challenger exploded. Didn't go outside to watch the launch like we usually did.
We had a NASA assembly that morning. The models were soo cool.
Not a day I'll ever forget.
Was also at KSC the day Columbia didn't land. Very creepy day, so many people yet quiet.

I was a teenager in the 80's and watched both the challenger disaster and the movie. Thinking back they could have pushed release back for a year and rework a few scenes to insert the challenger disaster as a motive. That would have made a big difference. It was a very difficult time and a national tragedy akin to losing a president. It never knew it lost money but the movie was pretty good for me. Thanks Minty. Love these historical videos you do on older movies. it's a trip through time for me. Thank you.
In the novelization of the movie, the reason Andi was anxious about throttling was because Challenger blew up when the pilot throttled.
Think maybe Spielberg got John Williams to score as a favor, trying to impress Capshaw whom he would get involved with in the near future?
I thought that at first too, but he had just married Amy Irving when this movie came out. Williams may have just known Capshaw as an acquaintance from Temple of Doom production.

This is my favorite movie from the 80's. I saw it in 29 Palms, Ca at the Drive in theater. I begged my parents to see it as we were right across the bay when the Challenger launched and exploded. I'll be honest every time I see an image of a shuttle launch, I get tears. At this movie it was bad being so soon after the disaster. But I absolutely love the movie.

Had the hots for Lea Thompson back in the 80's when I was a teen. She had that "girl next door" look about her, as did my real life girlfriend at the time.
I was born in 1974. The Challenger tragedy was the first personal/nation wide tragedy I experienced as a child. I begged my parents to take me to see Space Camp on opening day. And the Challenger was always in the back of my mind. But, when Space Camp came to HBO, I taped it and watched it religiously every other day.
I had no idea that the Challenger was the shuttle pictured in the movie. We watched the Challenger disaster live in school...The last time we ever watched any live TV in school.

I remember renting it in the summer and watching it with my family, great memories...
I had totally forgotten that the movie came out after the Challenger disaster. Looking back I think the movie was a great tribute to the spirit of space exploration. Through there is great danger, there is also great rewards and knowledge to be gained. My thoughts and prayers for the families and friends of those lost to the great endeavor of the exploration of space.
I remember seeing this in the movie theater -- AND, I also remember feeling a bit weird about it, given that we had seen the Challenger explosion live in our grade school Science classroom just a few months earlier.
Research the challenger I watched it too and I was surprised by the resemblance of astronauts with their names alive today

One of my favorite movies of all time, for sure. And pretty damn scary for a "kids" movie! That woman with the three fingers on one hand scared the SHIT out of me and haunted my nightmares for weeks after seeing it for the first time. And then there was that scene where the guy was literally HUNTING down a kid on the San Antonio Riverwalk -- with the intent to kill.

The movie as good as it is always made me think that it was always a ploy intended as a way for NASA to encourage kids into astronomy and all the science NASA studies through entertainment purposes. Also I never realized that was actually Phoenix in that movie.

I loved the movie when it first came out.
Back then I collected almost every newspaprer article I could find about the Challenger accident, which ended with the "Back in Space" front page news.
Also, check the movie "Meteor" with Sean Connery back in 1979. The spaceship that gets destroyed in the beginning, is named "Challenger II".
I live close to Space Camp!! It's part of the US Space and Rocket Center here in Huntsville, AL. I worked there summers during college and then in the art department after my degree. My best friend was an extra - he said Leah Thompson was not very pleasant to be around. Watching your review no I know why - 6 months!
It was really fun to work there and see and meet people behind the scenes. One time I got to put on a space suit and played a practical joke on a fellow employee - I stayed completely still in the suit when he came in and then a few moments later came to life and went right at him :()

I remember the space shuttle disaster. All of us watched it in school live. The faculty in my school thought we should watch the launch since a teacher was going to space. They were not prepared for what happened.

For people wondering how and why Williams scored this, he had an opening in his schedule when Spielberg's musical of Peter Pan fell apart and his friend - Fox music head Lionel Newman - told him about this project and he came onboard to do it and ended up having the main theme for the movie reused for decades after as trailer music for other films
I love the soundtrack. It's one of those - not really rare - cases, when the soundtrack is much much more better than the actual movie.

Little-known fact: the scene where Lea Thompson is in the multi-axis trainer has her trying to "stabilize" it with a joystick. The problem is, that's not what the MAT is for, and the joystick was a fake one. You can't stabilize it - the whole point is to acclimate you to being disoriented.

My favorite memory is going to visit Space Camp (the facility, though I wanted to, I never attended the actual camp as a student). A bunch of teens were trying and failing to work the MMU simulator. I got on and was basically Anakin Skywalker, LOL, flying to the destination in a short amount of time. Got a "captain" designation, IIRC. The looks on the faces of the teens who mocked me as I got on were priceless. I had no training whatsoever and I pwned them good. :)
