The MT-45 is one of my favorites in my collection, found mine in a thrift shop for $2 in excellent condition. Just noticed mine has different colored caps in a few switches too
@Rob Mikels dang omnichord is a unicorn. I frequent thrift stores. Got two sk-1s for like five bucks maybe 10 years ago? Sadly I tried to circuit bend one and it broke. The other one won't power on anymore for some reason 😭

I just got this wonderful keyboard in great condition with case at an estate sale recently. I'm quite the novice with keys so finding this video really opened up the possibilities. Great work, thank you!
This keyboard has amazing waveforms. I sampled/isolated the waves and drums in .WAV format for usage in full on music production. The results have been surprising and almost spectacular at times. The sounds are good for deep electronic house and sweet ditties. Thanks for this video, fortunately, mine still functions correctly.
A couple months ago I picked up a Casio MT-46 in very good condition at my local Music shop that sells used equipment. I very much love it! I recently used it in one of my videos. I mostly use it for the rhythm and accompaniment sections.
The MT-45 was my very first own electronic keyboard. I had a lot of fun with it. I had played an acoustic piano before, but the Casiotone was more fun. My second electronic keyboard was the Yamaha CS01 synth and it was fun to see them both in the ad in this video! I still have the Yamaha, but I sold the MT-45 already in the 80’s when I had bought a Casiotone CT-460 and I still miss the MT-45, even it’s so limited.
Oh man I am so hooked on the last tune you play! I think I need to play/cover it in some sense - there should be a place - maybe a facebook group - that cheap/retro home keyboard fans would meet and ramble about them.

love the chords and music you play very jazzy/prog! looking for an old old portable small/petite/mini/etc. keyboard I had in highschool. it was super retro that off-white color and had a record function on it for a single track maybe 2 and I played with it a lot, 3.5mm output only. still looking and came across your videos in this adventure! nice to hear these being demoed after so many years of existing. the repair and other parts of the video are a nice touch.
I would like to see a short behind-the-scenes of these videos sometime. These are always so well done, it would be a great learning experience for those wanting to make similar content.
I'm enjoying these videos, also impressed with your playing! I got a PT20 for Christmas, around 1984, I'd actually asked for a VL1 so in many ways it was a bit of a step up although the VL1 had some great features sadly missing from the PT20. I remember playing the MT45 and 65 one time in the shop though, I thought they were wonderful at the time, and its great to hear them again.
i got of these babies like 2017 $99 in a Casiotone hardcase it kicks ass love how the bass sounds when you got everything going and press two of the bass keys at once catchy
You always know how to make these toy keyboards sound really good! And you make the playing itself look effortless, too :) on those tiny keys, no less!
Excellent performance and great old vintage keyboard sounds including the drum sounds. I’ve owned loads of keyboards over many years including the current excellent Genos.
I remember there’s a ‘hidden’ additional rhythm tucked away inside these. You have to move the rhythm switch into a position between 16 beat and Disco if I remember correctly. If not these, then try it between some of the others. It’s a bit like Aerosmith ‘walk this way’ iirc. Haven’t played mine since 1986 but still got it somewhere.
Ahhh yes :-D my second favorite CASIO. I own this one and the smaller MT11 with out the accomp section. I have actual recordings with this keyboard that I turned to MP3 format. I even circuit bent it and played it like that with 2 songs.
@@gratis I will have to dust off my Casio if I can find it under all my numerous stacks of keyboards, and I will plug in and find the 2 pins I shorted, to make the distorted ring mod like sounds and will then indicate those here. That actually sounds like a nice Thanksgiving project! I will update when I get it done.
I’m lucky enough to own a mint MT-45 and an MT-46. The audio difference that is obvious to me is the MT-46 has a much louder amplifier, whereas the MT-45 is the best looking of all the Casios. The main voice chip is different than other Casios and while limited has a really appealing warmth that leaves the MT-65 sounding rather thin and anemic.
@@KeenOnKeys May I suggest the PSS 380/390, the PSS 680/780, the Casio MT-400v (fantastic), or even the MT-100 (although not a ADSR synth, the graphic equaliser gives some great sounds - and is under rated). ;)
e.g. I have just received a bundle of 2 x pss 680 and 1 x pss 51 (like the 790) for just £68 delivered. All working with with various key/button issues. Easy fixes.
@@KeenOnKeys Have you come across the Yamaha MK-100? This is a synth, with editable waveforms and envelopes, but interestingly based on pre-fm Yamaha hardware, early 80's. It has a hidden scrolling menu bar for all of the parameters, patch and composition data can apparently also be saved to tape, like an 8 bit micro!

The musical style or genre that sounds between minutes 09:09 and 09:20 approx. with a melody/bass in the left hand, does it have a name? @KeenOnKeys - great job on the clean-up and repair and nice to see you addressed the issue of buttons, these really are difficult to find and replace. These early casios are overlooked and they sound great, not meaning realistic, but pleasant. Which would you say is favourite of the [semi] analogue MT's - the MT 30, 40, 45, 60 or 65? My personal preference is the MT 60 for looks and its close between the 65 and 60 for sound, the MT 65 has more functions, but I like the sound and the arpeggio on the 60.

Hello,...as always a very interesting video. I kind of love the sounds of the early 80s. They have a certain charm. My oldest Casio is a CTK-900, but probably not directly comparable. My Yamaha PSS-790 comes closer to me. best regards
Hi, i owned a mt46 in the 80's, and you forgot about the "hidden rhythm" 😊 it can be found if you turn off the power, put the rhythm selector IN BETWEEN any rhythm presets existing, then turn on the power, and it s done, at least it used to work on mine Cheers
It is hard to tell which I like the best. I have more than 100 right now. The PSS-480, MT-400v and VL-1 are definitely in my top 10, but I really can't tell which are the worst.
Thanks for the demo, i was close to buying one of these today on sight because i liked the small keys but when i tried it out i could not figure out if the whole keyboard could be played in one voice. Thanks to this video now i know it cannot play one voice fully, sadly, i like the keyboard. Wonder if there is a casio with small keys that does play one voice across all keys ?, and even up to five octaves would be nice.
As far as I know the MT-45 is the only Casio keyboard were you can't use the main voice with all keys. But there are very few with 5 octaves of mini keys.
I enjoyed this review. It is a very nice keyboard for accompaniment on multi-track, as you said it does lack the crystal/bell sounds. Would you suggest pairing this with the MT-70? I also happened across 2 x mt-46 keyboards for around £15, both have the same power fault, which seems to be commonly found on ebay. I have noticed there was a failed foil capacitor on the power board, so here's hoping they are both easy fixes. ;)
Yes, the MT-70 would be a good addition, or maybe try out the MT-65. It has the same accompaniment but different preset instruments (I will do a review about it). And good luck with your MT-46. Nice find for £15.
@@KeenOnKeys Thanks for the advice. I wanted an MT-65, but on a budget. I managed to acquire a broken MT-65 for £38. The power switch was busted (they are flimsy inside), I needed to replace a rectifier and it finally worked when I fitted a diode to the power board (shown as a link in service manual, but not fitted to this board?!). I also fitted a diode to disable auto power off - really easy on the MT-65, but can also do this on MT-100 and 400 (any with the DG chip) ;)

Hi! Love your channeI! I have an old Casio MT-25 with a tone select button (the one that switches from the upper tone selection to the lower) that won't stay pressed anymore. I can still press it and it will register the lower tones but it will pop up and change the tone again. Do you have any idea on how to fix that? Cheers!

I am going to wire individual mini jack outputs for bass, lead, arpeggio, chords and individual rhythm voices. Not exactly what you are describing but at least will be able to use a mixing desk to control or mute the parts
Too bad the new portable keyboards that have been coming out are very similar to each other, unlike the ones from the 1980's, where most instruments had different sounds and features. I used many different ones in my home studio until 1990 when I got a professional Yamaha (SY-55). But I still love those little Casios and Yamahas. They kept me going until I could afford professional grade instruments.

I have a PSS-270, which has 100 preset sounds, most of them excellent. It was my main keyboard from 1988 to 1990, when I bought a Yamaha SY-55. Sorry, my PSS-270 is not for sale. I hope you can find one!

@@thompi8 I just checked eBay and there are a number of PSS-270's available in prices ranging from $64 to $119 or so. Some allow the buyer to make an offer, so you could probably get one even cheaper than the list prices. Good luck!
I found one on market with speaker not working, selection mode not working and line out sounds quite, but the body looks white clean. Is it easy to fix? Should I take the risk?
Hey keen on keys or anyone listening I have a Casio that looks exactly like this one but above and below the Casio logo it says Casio in Arabic and the other half of the keyboard is in Arabic lettering. I can’t find a manual but it reads Casiotone AT-40 the power light turns on when I switch it but no sound from the Keys even with the volume on.

The sounds coming from this board throw off something between a Sega Genesis and Homestar Runner vibe. I love it!
The Homestar Runner guys used Casio keyboards for the music.

Not with my model. But it's entirely possible. The accompaniment chip can actually produce four more rhythms

The casio ctk-900 is very underrated. Casio jammed many features into it you wouldn't ever expect.

The earlier 80's Casios look like they were adapted from the old Star Wars movies. Which obviously, is way cool!

The memory function is just for the accompaniment section while in fingered or casio chord mode.

Hello Keen on Keys, Love your videos! My MT-46 is slightly out of tune and I can't find any tuning pot on the back like on my other casiotones from this era. Do you know if there is any way to tune it? Thanks !

Great review! It would be great if there was a possibility to separate the arpeggio from the drum patterns, so that it could be played alone
I am going to wire individual mini jack outputs for bass, lead, arpeggio, chords and individual rhythm voices. Not exactly what you are describing but at least will be able to use a mixing desk to control or mute the parts

No, I don't own all of them, but a lot of the shown MT models.
Too bad the new portable keyboards that have been coming out are very similar to each other, unlike the ones from the 1980's, where most instruments had different sounds and features. I used many different ones in my home studio until 1990 when I got a professional Yamaha (SY-55). But I still love those little Casios and Yamahas. They kept me going until I could afford professional grade instruments.

always fun to se these videos. i want to se more yamaha keyboards from pss series i still loking for a pss 270-390 but its hard to find i had before a 780 but didnt like that one even if it has more effekts alternativ synth settings
I have a PSS-270, which has 100 preset sounds, most of them excellent. It was my main keyboard from 1988 to 1990, when I bought a Yamaha SY-55. Sorry, my PSS-270 is not for sale. I hope you can find one!
@@tomfurgas2844 yea i know what it is vas one of my first keyboards i used so its just a memory i want to have back. its small and easy to store. i had the psr-6 its almost the same keyboard but takes alot more space :D
@@thompi8 I just checked eBay and there are a number of PSS-270's available in prices ranging from $64 to $119 or so. Some allow the buyer to make an offer, so you could probably get one even cheaper than the list prices. Good luck!

I found one on market with speaker not working, selection mode not working and line out sounds quite, but the body looks white clean. Is it easy to fix? Should I take the risk?
Hey keen on keys or anyone listening I have a Casio that looks exactly like this one but above and below the Casio logo it says Casio in Arabic and the other half of the keyboard is in Arabic lettering. I can’t find a manual but it reads Casiotone AT-40 the power light turns on when I switch it but no sound from the Keys even with the volume on.
where do you get the foam/sponge at 6:44 ? it could come in so handy as a lot of these older keyboards invariably have damage etc there....

Fortunately, it wasn't damaged. Just dirt and some sticker residues.
As a 12 year old I bought this new back in 1983......
And still have it today.
