    As a Designer and Mini Cooper SE owner, I am excited about the new generation. If the voice recognition is good, and the UI is as smooth as it is beautiful and functional, some might prefer using it over Car Play and Android Auto. I am cool with the minimalistic interior as long as the quality of the assembly and the materials are on par with the current generation. Maybe I should fill out the application to join the Design team, I like what they do 🤩

    • @WhatisaLee
      @WhatisaLee ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@infj2177 I think what they meant is that displays like these are often cheaper to implement and design than proper analogue user interfaces: buttons, dials, gauges,.knobs, etc. And often, it comes at the expense of user experience because they are more difficult to navigate and use at a glance.
      Take for instance that the driver must now look to the center of the dashboard instead of directly in front in order to glance at the speedometer. Maybe a HUD is implemented to accommodate for this oversight, but what then of visibility and glare issues? It seems like a design decision informed by form-over-function or worse, cost-cutting. There is no obvious benefit to the driver by limiting the interface to the center dash.
      Personally, I could care less about the interior materials were it made of the softest of vegan leathers or carved from the rarest metals if I know that the experience of using it is subpar or if parsing information as I drive is compromised.

    • @infj2177
      @infj2177 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @WhatisaLee I agree. I will walk away from the new Mini if I can not see the speed, speed limit, and navigation right in front of me. What Tesla did with the single screen should be banned. It's simply not safe.

    Using OLED for the main screen is a huge mistske. Within just a couple of years or maybe even less, itll generate screenburn then after a few years itll be so hard to find the same screen. Either because they changed the design, or they moved away from oled. OLED will look amazing but a UHD LED screen would be far better.

    I'm a bit concerned about the direction in which car design is heading, especially looking at the new Mini cockpit project. It seems to be loaded with distractions that could divert my attention away from driving. It's a relief that the designers have considered allowing the clock to be positioned with the least distraction. However, I must point out the designed mascot animation that pops up on the screen after saying "Hi Mini" - it could lead to some truly unwanted effects while on the road. As an interaction designer, I'm quite worried about such moves from designers, as it feels like we're turning a regular car into a smartphone that's relentlessly trying to capture my attention, and that's not the role a car should play.

    As a designer, I appreciate how well thought out the UI/UX looks in these demos! Its not easy designing for a circular screen (which is also very very cool and different!) Also really like the fact they retained some of the key touch-points as physical knobs and buttons. Sometimes you cannot replace that tactile UX with screens (like Tesla is doing). I just hope their electric cars get a more competitive range as well… can’t expect people to pay a premium for less than 150km of real world range (230km of WLTP range). It’s currently worse than the e-golf, and even just on par with the now very the old generation Nissan Leaf. I don't agree with removing the gauge cluster from the steering column. The only reason Tesla gets away with the speedometer on the center display (something I'm also not a fan of) is because they relegated a significant portion close to the driver to indicate speed, so there's some argument to be made for it due to visually isolating the pertinent information. Having it in a small font and at the top of this display makes it feel lost in all the other graphics being shown and almost like your speed is an afterthought. They should reinstate the gauge cluster and simply make the center display infotainment, with the ability to bring in the old speedometer as the ONLY graphic as supplementary.

    Maybe I'm just an old fasioned stick in the the mud, but I hate everything being digital. I hate not having tactile buttons/switches/knobs that I can use without taking my eyes off the road. All these touch screens are neat and all. But you have to look away from DRIVING to fiddle with them to change your radio station, your cabin temperature, the blower mode, what have you. Why does it need the ability to play games or movies on the primary screen? Is there an unbreakable way to lock those features out when driving? Why are car companies allowed to paywall certain features behind a monthly premium on top of an already stupidly expensive car?

    2) aux switches add ons for customer to add random things
    3) physical buttons for easy settings shortcuts ( climate change ect )
    4) normal heads-up display system without the clunky motor
    5) customizable speedometer
    6) will this system added to the entire mini line up for both ev and petrol models ( jcw ) and more …
    7) will you finally add a digital rear view mirror
    8) remote start system ( integrated features and controls via key fob and mini app )

    With all the new tech and possibilities, MINI seems to be unfortunately the only manufacturer that uses the full potential of its user interface. Every car has huge screens built in it, but nearly no one gives the user the possibilty to completely restyle the entire car with this center piece. Mini seems to have amazing designs, a clever use of different widgets and gives its driver the freedom to style his car in his very own way. Love it and I wish way more companies would actually allow that. Especially the UIs from other German manufacturers like VW and its brands but also Mercedes are batshit ugly and dated.

    finally, a car that doesn't just have everything integrated into one screen. I love all the switches and toggles, they make the car like a real machine. the communication between car and driver is much more entertaining than those cars full of so-called "high tech screens".
    nowadays' screens make driving boring and blend. Back in the early 90s, when cars were designed to be enjoyed by drivers from all the gauges and instruments. they gave the driver a sense of thrill. now everything is boring.
    Great job MINI.

      You do know that the original MINI design (along with plenty of cars of that era) placed the speedometer there? And that the revamped MINIs in the early sights maintained that? And that it’s one of the most requested things to be returned?

    Mesh is not hard to clean? Besides this, I like the minimalism. A bigger screen is really nice! As for the indication about fuel, and speed, would it still be visible from above the steering wheel or on the big circular screen? I prefer the former as the later is a bit dangerous for driving according to me and my experience. I saw the new design for the countryman,... it is terrible.
