    You seem like a really nice fellow and that is some good work, I am a contractor and I do the exact same thing with the hammer smash to the middle. I'd like to share a tip with you that will save a lot of time and effort. Take your Sawzall or reciprocating saw as I'm sure you know. Run that right down the side of the tile where it meets the drywall on the verticals. Then after your knife cut on top and Hammer break in the middle you should be able to pull the tile and the fiber board, green board or drywall whatever it may be right off the wall without the chipping flat bar method. Although it's nice to have a friend there because the pieces can be heavy but it saves a lot of time. As I said before, great work and I hope this comment helps to make your job easier and help all your awesome followers this is a great Channel 👊

    Just found your video as I moved into my husband's house that he already owns. He loves this old house. It was built 150 years ago... and it shows all over to me. One, the tub area is horrible. Iron and hard water from well so it's always staining reddish brown ... constant cleaning battle. And then the old tub walls are clearly showing signs of water damage. I attempted to remove the old wood trim and caulk around the tub walls and now I can't get new caulk to seal no matter what I do. I hate to tell my husband this cus of the cost but I really believe we need to completely gut the tub area and start new. With building material costs so high, I am scared to have this talk with him. But watching your video has helped to believe we can do the job and save on labor costs hopefully.

    You make me smile knowing theres hope. I remember when I first saw my steam shower before moving in our rehab hike. And I asked the project manager what kind of material they used on the ceiling as it was not tiled looked just like drywall, there didn’t even paint it with high gloss or something just bare looking. Anyways project manager said they used green board. I said that’s not waterproof, he responds it’s water resistant you’ll be fine. But I love the way you put it honestly and straight forward. It might be water resistant but not water proof it might be mold resistant but not mold proof, same result just longer to get there. Thanks Jeff I will share this with my new contractors.

    I always love watching your videos. I was given a Safe-Step tub that I wanted to replace my old tub with, but I have cultured marble on the shower wall. I wanted to keep that. But the more videos I watch on removing my tub, I'm thinking there's no way I can remove my cultured marble off the wall and reinstall it, can I? Anyhow, thank you for all the DIY help as this middle-aged woman continues to renovate an entire house.

    Love all your videos. So many good tips. I don't start any project, even one I've done before, without first watching your related videos. The one about how to paint saved me tons of time and improved my painting skills immensely.
    Now I am about to demo a small corner shower. A little worried because the tile stands proud of the wall by almost an inch, so I suspect it has a thick mortar bed under the tile, which might make your technique a bit more difficult. Not sure a hammer will penetrate so easily and the pieces are bound to be a lot more heavy. Time for some exploratory surgery, but there will be no turning back!

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ken , if you have access from the back side of the wall then you can use a sledge to break off the cement wall and then just replace the drywall after to close the access point. it will save you hours of time.

    I hate re-watching this after I removed my shower. My drywall was all glued and nailed in. One wall had OSB behind it and it was glued to that as well, I was hammering on it thinking what the hell why is there support everywhere!? Anyway...I finally got it out after taking 3x as long as I thought it would take.

    Hey Jeff, love your videos. When removing the bath tub, I know it’s important to shut off the main water valve to the house. Being a first timer demoing and renovating my bathroom, this process will take me two weeks. When can I turn on the water valve again for the rest of the house? How can I secure that line in the bathroom from causing flooding in my bathroom?

    Would you recommend bath fitters liner system? They have no lip on there liners, so water can get between liner and tub. If not can you come down to Windsor, and do my tub surround? How much would something like what you did on these videos cost? Just labour cost?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bathtub liner companies charge around 3000 and up, and that doesn't include new plumbing. If you want a good job you should be prepared to pay a qualified installer fair wages for 3 days to complete this project.
      Sorry I can't get down to Windsor and help. My clients have to be within 1 hr drive for now.

    • @guitar1junky
      @guitar1junky 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is a fair wage? One guy said 1200 dollars, but maybe thought about it again and never showed up. Seeing your video, and others I feel I can do it myself. Just wondering what a fair wage would be in your professional opinion. And in your opinion, do you think there will always be some mold behind the tile. Mine has been in use for 18 years now. So, what do you think of putting a liner over top, good or bad idea?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      anything 18 years old has mold. You will be disappointed if you don't change your wall surround. You could install a "plastic surround" but change the drywall first.

  • @hockeyman1

    Hi. Question for you. Is there a chance I can just remove tile by tile then patch and mortar for new tile layout ? Or should I just remove the drywall like in your video . What are the advantages and disadvantages of these applications. Thanks in advance

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you are confident that the wall board is cement then I would remove the whole thing. It will be beyond repair otherwise and a huge waste of time. I can remove the wall and install a new one in less time than it take sto chisel away. Plus i get to inspect the vapor barrier and insulation which is often poorly done in these areas.

    Isn't it going to create a problem with condensation - sandwiching your drywall between 2 moisture barriers?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      the problem you are referring too is when you have 2 layers of plastic overlapping each other. This direct contact causes moisture build up. The use of a moisture barrier on either side of the drywall does not have the same effect . no problem using schluter water proofing system.

    • @Radixdean
      @Radixdean 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick answer! I am enjoying your videos as I research my upcoming DIY shower remodel. Lots of conflicting info out there, but I have settled on Kerdi system for my waterproofing. My own background includes finish carpentry, so I am well aware that watching a experienced pro install the system will not necessarily reflect my own experience.... I can imagine if the Kerdi doesn't get lined up right and you have to move it, it could become a hot mess very quickly. Have you ever had to pitch a piece of the membrane because it folded up or got messed up as you were attempting to place it?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ruban, sorry for the delay. Kerdi does not act like wallpaper. It is similar to installing a vinyl floor. You can roll it out and pull it off and reset it with minimal problems. If you are concerned simply cut the pieces to fit each side of the wall and use the 2È overlap rule on any joint. The waterproofing is in the overlapping so as long as you keep all joints to 2 inches in all directions you will be fine. Good luck.

    Would you still recommend this technique for removing the tile if the shower wall has a bank in it? My shower is up against where the roof is angled and starts to bank toward the ceiling about 6 feet up.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sure your wall board is still attached the same way. Just bust the wall into manageable sizes . usually a 3' x 3' piece is about 30 lbs

  • @estpaul3132
    @estpaul3132 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    what if it's cement board or old thick 3/4 plaster from the 50's?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      cement board works in exactly the same manner, just more brut strength required. when removing old plaster it is easier because the pieces of drwall that were plastered are small rectangular shaped with nails not screws. they pop off with ease.

    • @estpaul3132
      @estpaul3132 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ottawa Design and Build Renovations Thanks for the info. I had to cut out parts of damaged wall it was the sheets of drywall with plaster like you said nailed to studs. it was 3/4'' thick. the easiest solution seems to be too hang 1/2'' then 1/4'' over that to repair the areas. If i find the batbtub walls are also that thick when I demo this weekend do you suggest shimming the studs with shims ripped down from 2x4 or hanging 2 sheets of cement board in the same manner as the patches I'll be doing?

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      it may be easiest to use 1/4 inch plywood and then your 1/2 " material. The other option is to laminate 2x4 to existing studs and re frame the tub area to create a perfectly square and level environment before tiling. This can make tiling really easy if your walls are crooked. Good luck

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY
      @HomeRenoVisionDIY  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would suggest sing 1/4 inch plywood first. it holds a screw quite nicely and easy to cut and install.

    • @HomeRenoVisionDIY

      I don't have any idea or knowledge who they are. The name kinda says it all. They specialize in one area of construction. I can appreciate that not all of my techniques are in synergy with the way they operate. I am trying to teach DIY'ers how to do things themselves. This requires simplifying the tools and materials which probably offends their sense of professionalism.
