  • This improvisation is about creating short, spontaneous phrases on the didgeridoo that have a speech-like quality, almost like a baby babbling or a person speaking in "nonsense" a la Lewis Carroll's "Jabberwocky."
Babbling: "A stage in child language acquisition, during which an infant appears to be experimenting with uttering sounds of language, but not yet producing any recognizable words."
The evening of October 7, 2024 was a breakthrough in my personal didge practice since it's the first time I've ever really attempted this style of "babbling" improvisation on the didgeridoo. I'm really amazed at how close it feels to actually speaking. It struck me that if people never used their speaking voices but only had didgeridoos to communicate with, we'd probably do just fine! I was reminded of whale and dolphin calls, though after going to listen to some recordings of those, I don't think they quite sound like didge, but still. Perhaps I'm more reminded of birdsong. Which reminds me, I composed a clavichord piece titled "Birdsong" and perhaps its my favorite thing I've composed: rudiseitz.band...
The session lasted over a half-hour and although it wasn't originally intended as a performance, it felt special to me. After I cut it down to 10 minutes I felt the remaining material had enough coherence and something of an arc that I'm releasing it as an "improvisation." It ends with some meditative circular breathing. Thanks for listening!
Audio: Shure SM7b mic close to the didge bell (one or two inches). Two AEA N8 Mics in a Blumlein configuration set roughly 5 feet away from the didge, in an echoey room corner. TRP2 and Grace preamps. UAD interface and plugins.
