When I was in the navy, I gave out the first couple books (Honor Harrington) to numerous officers. Each told me later that the series actually made them better officers.

I have the entire Honor Harrington series and I really enjoyed the talk - and the reasons behind why he's written the way he has. Thanks to the USNA for hosting this.

Thank you for posting this very interesting & enlightening video. I have been enjoying David Weber's books and getting a sense of his personality & "priorities" has convinced me to keep reading as I was becoming concerned at the way they are slanted - noting the previous comment that its a very western oriented view of warfare - I would go further in one sense and say "American" rather than "Western" (I am British). The one thing, touched on in a not entirely conclusive way, where I may have different views is that the front-runner in an arms race who has peacekeeping intentions should not in so doing tend to proliferate arms and therefore cutting back on military spending should always be carefully considered as an option. It isn't easy sometimes to tell the difference between a pessimistic realist and an optimistic milatarist and while I still don't know for certain which he is, its obvious the man has a heart and is worth listening to.

Great talk from an awesome author. Glad to get the hint about the upcoming HH novel (though 11 months away still hurts). Thank you for posting

Safehold and the March series are also some of my faves. And for those of a game bent Starfire

Holy Jeebus, those Janes Fighting Ships yearbooks cost a small fortune for the current edition and the older ones aint cheap either. That's some serious cash for reference material.

@17:07 (Quoted for its inherent truth) That the VAST MAJORITY of americans will never serve in any capacity that... *takes a deep breath* To me, it doesn't matter what the rest of our country believes or does not. Thousands of 'peacetime' servicemen, followed by millions of active duty WARRIORS (both on land and on sea) This, David, is why I chose to serve my country, in a lot of ways alluded to, if not acknowledged in the writings that fall under "A Call to Arms" (aka the rise of Manticore) Not sure what more I can say at the moment other than what you are saying in this talk to the leaders of the service I pledged myself to 10 years (Based on my date of discharge) before you spoke resonates with me still?

Something (it seem to me) so many people don't understand, is just how small and interconnected our planet has gotten in the last 100 years. I was in an online...discussion with a guy a couple of years ago, did a quick google search....its 14 hours flying time from Kabul to Knoxville.

A good many years ago, I had the good fortune to have dinner with David Weber. I regret to say that I came across as a bit of an idiot. Maybe when you are in the light of someone who has their shit together, one's own failings are more brought to light.

I think standing in front of real navy officers in the fantasy uniform of the world you made up in your head needs some serious courage....

It's a beret, it's not the full uniform that he has. Plus they're (mostly) Navy so berets aren't particularly relevant.

A very western perspective on warfare.
