I’d like to add that it is also very important for teachers to allow plenty of space (!) between problems on worksheets, homework, and exams so that students will literally have the room required to show their work, both while practicing their skills and being tested on them. This might seem intuitively obvious, yet I cannot believe how many math papers (including decades-old worksheets still in use in public schools) I’ve seen in which there had been no more than one centimeter of vertical space -and only one line-within which the equation could be solved-or the concept could be explained. Building upon this observation, it is no wonder that most students in the United States don’t seem to value the “why” or the “how” of mathematics… only the answer is valued. Though it is important to be accurate, of course, showing the mathematical steps toward the answers will help students-ultimately-to better understand the concepts.

Teaching is very much a social job and a public service, and I think the most critical factors of a teacher being good or bad have to do with their alignment to the country as a whole, how much they like the community they’re in, how much they enjoy being a teacher, and probably also being in a happy marriage can make a big difference, but not as much as the first three things I mention here. I think the difficulty in determining what makes them good or bad is because the factors are very much ‘big picture’

This is fascinating, though sometimes the conservation leads to poignant feelings in my case. Math classes in my public schools conditioned me to feel 'stupid' at math (and in general, to a lesser extent). In many of the classes, such as 'Algebra 1' and 'college prep geometry' I worked very hard-spending 2 or 3 hours per night on homework-to little avail. I usually received Ds on homework assignments after working for hours on them. I could do both English and history assignments in less than half the time I spent on math, and got As despite the lower average temporal investment. Math classes diminished my curiosity for math, leaving me with much lower self-esteem. Clearly this is a common situation.😢 I hope it can become uncommon. But many of my worst teachers (which I define as those who use the classroom setting to make themselves feel superior to the students; or who are simply inept at communicating knowledge) taught (only) math. I sincerely hope that math can be taught well throughout the USA (and the world). I appreciate this goal: All children deserve a solid foundation in mathematics-and the myriad applications the subject has in the 21st century.❤

The problem of getting attention from students in a math class is giving practical examples in the beginning classes - where we lose the students - because students conclude (after effort) - this is long drawn - not realising that some math is needed in life.
Success can be seen if there is an agreement on the minimum needed - for all - teach it with lots of practical examples and time - and take it from there

Yes, math seems to be about the mechanism of all things. @@BillGate-mu5fr I really respect Bill Gates, Bill Gate, and recommend you take a look inside yourself to find the delicate nature of innocence which may be available to you, if it is not compartmentalized and ignored in an attempt to get on somehow ‘creatively’. I find it interesting that individuals are more interested in scamming rather than putting this energy into developing some respect and pride in oneself, possibly by way of getting an actual job and developing useful skills that contribute to the betterment of the world around rather than it’s destruction. If anyone has hurt you, I’m sorry, it’s happened to us all. Every single one of us. No one else is responsible for your immediate reality because only you are capable of creating it. Either one becomes part of the solution or part of the problem. When one feels strong enough, one is able to be part of the solution even if the rest of the world seems not to be doing the same. No one has to do what the majority seem to be doing; if one does not respect it, it is not necessary to allow it to then lead them, but rather necessary for them to be an example. Try to be stronger than you are in misrepresenting a wonderful example for our world. Bill Gates continues to do so much despite so much public criticism, he remains answerable because he understands how necessary it is to his cause. His cause is real and he carries the burden of constant scrutiny, and while he has an introverted nature this burden is evidently a difficult and uncomfortable thing for him to address as publicly as he does. Please have some flipping compassion and try to develop some emotional intellect. You will amount to little following this current path. We are all capable of doing better than we have and each moment is a new opportunity to do so. Yes, he will come out on top if his investments reap rewards, but his efforts are still a gamble on society’s decisions to either choose to align or to dive into the basics of the reptilian brain basic nature of the animal that sapiens are. We instead get to use logic and become aware of the basic nature of this animal, then choosing to tune into the evolved part of this animal’s brain and realize it’s full potential. Which do we choose? Many people choose to follow their basic nature because they don’t know this code. Well there I’ve decoded it for you. Now you can override your basic nature and take steps toward a better self, contributing to a better future for others as well. I’ve spent enough time on this and now have some math work to do. All the best to you!

What a straightforward, great idea. It almost seems a crime that there are truly great teachers out there who, simply because they lack the inclination to self-promote have their work limited to their immediate students. Gates could indeed do this. The only hitch might be identifying who was truly great. When John Deasy was superintendent of Los Angeles Unified, he visited a particular high school with the whole bureaucratic entourage en tow and asked, "OK, who is the best math teacher here?" Things got uncomfortable and the principal said, "All our teachers are the best." So you gotta deal with that!

Looking at the students focus being a factor in telling if the teacher is doing a good job…!
I could have told anyone interested that of course the students need to be present to be able to get it!
But what separates the good teacher from the not so fortunate teacher is how they handle the situation.
I don’t need a camera recording. I can read the signs immediately when standing in front of the students.
My understanding is that sometimes students are lacking focus from other reasons than the teacher being a poor teacher. It could have been the party and the late night, or something else that made them tired. It could also be that the topic is a bit challenging and hard to digest.
Solution, take a break whenever you spot that your students are out of focus.
I tried this about twenty years ago. The students did indeed lose focus at times. We took a break either after the full 40 minutes of the class, or after 20 minutes if they were losing focus.
I managed to cram in quite a bit of knowledge into the students, and a got really good evaluation from the students.
The also approach me in the city to express their appreciation, and even asked me to come back to teach another subject.
Nope I am not going to work as a teacher!
But companies might consider the transferable knowledge and skills.

I am totally agreeing with Bill Gates on the importance of proper education, on identifying the key success drivers, and sometimes an over-optimism on technology.
Some people tends to go for an it solution as soon as they are faced with a problem, instead of understanding the problem and find a solution that satisfy the problem .

Education and Healthcare are the mechanisms to move society forward and make life rewarding for the population. Mathematics is the pathway to success and weaves solutions to the problems we need to address. Thru the use of core competency in the C's and focus on what is required to develop a human mind and human capital, AI processing will assist in deliverable solutions advancing education and society by making the movement of civic engagement possible.

It's so great to hear about the future role of AI as a tutor. I always felt that math needs to be in the context of a game with symbolic rewards - we need to code math into our brains with small rewards. Can you tell I play too much candy crush? I was at one time impressed with mnemomic techniques for memorizing long numbers which involved assigning each number to a symbol or image which were then converted into stories. To me, math is creative imagination in a structured way. While incredibly useful in structuring our World, nothing in RL exists which actually is a perfect number. There are no lines or perfect squares, triangles or cubes. We can only measure down to a certain point, after which we use math. And it works at human scale, but all matter and non-matter at every level is based on energy moving in waves and circles with random variants. These are only approximated with math.

Education, in particular in abstract fields, can't be discussed in terms of method patterns. Patterned Math's education is like knowing a good wine by reading the bottle label, but where is the taste? Learning math's may be first oriented experience exchange. And obviously Elon Musk is right when he says you don’t need to go to school to learn!
But you have to want to learn and then find the teachers wherever they might be.
My point: school and a great teacher is good. But you also learn outside school. From other people and through experience…
I have also been quoted saying:
You should be careful with what you are trying to teach people, they might learn something you didn’t intended and it may have consequences you didn’t foresee

Yes, it is extremely important to focus particularly on those students who possess low self-esteem regarding their mathematic capabilities-as well as those most likely taken-for-granted “ninetieth-percentile achievers”. I’ve worked with high school students who still couldn’t measure with rulers, perform basic mathematical operations with fractions, or solve simple equations. Often, teachers must first become cheerleaders for these students- before any teaching begins. Underprivileged students are too often discouraged regarding their potential mathematical abilities, and so, this creates a certain “mathematical paralysis” which is difficult to break through. Thus, teachers face challenges regarding their students which extend beyond basic discipline in the classroom.

I am one of those people who suffered from math anxiety. As a female in elementary and high school in the 1940s and 1950s, I was considered a good student but always had issues with math. I learned later that that was common among young women. The first time that any teacher encouraged me in math was in the 12th grade. I went to university, but took few math classes, only those that were required in my field.

@sallytournas9007 Motivation is the factor, here, though. If someone *wants to learn* to use that ruler-yet doesn’t have enough self-esteem to do so-then that inner conflict becomes an obstacle to learning.

@@IkarianWoman I loved math and excelled at it. When the situation presented itself, I loved to explain to young children the little tricks and logic that made it fun... like the nine's time table and the five's which always ended in either 5 or 0.,, etc. The problem with education, in my opinion, is that the smart kids that are really interested are often overlooked. Often, children chosen for leadership roles and mentoring are those who are better connected. Whether math, or politics or any subject really. often the children that need the help the most are the ones that are ignored.

@@dinaannnirenstein87 I don't think it's a matter of self-esteem. Eratosthemes was a smart man and motivated and he satisfied his thirst for understanding. If he was struggling to survive however, and didn't have the opportunity to pursue his interest, he would not have been able to do so. Why do you think self-esteem has anything to do with this?
