Sorry to hear you had a stressful morning yesterday.
I love the rain! Listening to it, watching it, walking in it. Always have. A rainy day to me is a lovely day, it just makes me so happy. Probably just as well, given that I live in England I guess!
I listen to rain sounds to help me relax or focus all the time, I even have different types of rain sounds for different moods/situations. Thunderstorms, rain on rocks, rain falling on the ocean...
Really interesting to see your inititial reaction to this deck, thank you for bringing us in on it.
I have never picked up this deck for similar reasons, so I'll be interested to see how you get on with this one.

Oh, this will be interesting! The Mary-El is the first non-traditional deck I deeply connected with after studying the RWS, even the first I carried around with me in my bag & read for friends with because I was just so into it. The more I read with it, the more I discovered how well Mary White captured this ocean of collective subconscious, of cultural & mystical identity we share as humans (made up of deities, archetypes, stories etc.). It's almost like the Ritual Tarot in that it feels very old to me. I love the oil painting too because it's a medium with a long history but I can see how it might put people off. Curious to see more of your journey with this deck!

So perfectly said!! It’s an absolute gem and one of my favorites that I rarely use because of the time it takes to glean the gems. If I used it more often it would t take me so long but it feels like one of those friends you meet with a few times a year for deep dives and it feels like you pick up right where you left off. It will never leave my collection.

Connecting to this deck reminds me kind of a deep dive into the ocean😉!
I also have a first edition, but I trimmed it. Usually I don't mind a bigger decks... if their cardstock is fine, but this one was so glossy and sticky...
I worked with it for a few months, but since a year, it's been sitting on my shelf untouched. I don't want to cull it because it's the first edition and...sometimes some decks requires just a specific time to be work with🌊✨️🌻

This deck intimidated me to the point where I stopped trying to learn tarot for over a year. About 2 years back in, and I still haven't picked it up to try to read with it yet. I too have the first edition, and it's literally my favorite deck...I just haven't felt ready to deep dive into the learning process of it yet. This deck is an ocean. Deep, dark, confusing, full of mystery. I’ll never understand it, but I also love that about it! It was actually the Five of Pentacles that made me fall in love with the deck. I remember drawing that card when I was going through a really rough financial time in my life last year and feeling so comforted by the imagery and the message in the guidebook. It completely transformed how I see that card ♥️

This deck was involved in my first deep encounter with an imaginal spirit, unsurprising given its visionary quality. Each image feels less created and more encountered, like a portal to a place that already exists. It's not my style for decks I would divine with, so it's reserved for meditation and spiritual contemplation.

I’m so happy to live by the ocean.
Oh the Mary El….. I have the first edition and have such mixed feelings about it. There are some stunningly beautiful cards in this deck and in fact, one of my favorites is the 5 of Discs….. but I’m really glad I gave it my own definition. Tbh, the guidebook piece you read kind of ruins the card for me. Years ago I decided to “deep dive” the Mary El. I wanted to see what all the hype was about and I cannot tell you how many people advised me “ just read the cards, don’t go anywhere near the guidebook”. So yeah, I did take a peak at the book, but nope, it’s not for me. And the deck is not one of my favorites either. So, why do I keep it? That is the question. Thank you for bringing this deck forward once again. I’m going to have to consider why I keep it.

    @donnarion1147 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I just - luckily - stumbled on this video and loved it. Just this week I fell prey to the *oceans* of hype and re-bought - yes, re-bought - the deck. I had the deck when it first came out, used it for a couple of years and then culled it. You said (a little tongue in cheek) that it must be a good deck based on its popularity and hype. Everyone says so, don't they? I already regret re-buying it; I think that all of the hype is akin to the Emperor's new clothes - no one wants to be the one to point out that he isn't wearing any! As an open channel to my guidance, I have no problem reading the Mary El, but there are just too many cards that don't say tarot to me and that I actuallly dislike. Oh well... Thanks a bunch for sharing and I'll look to see if you made follow-ups to this. If not, please do. All the best, Donna
ETA: I realized this later - you mentioned the discrepancy in the watery astrology allusion of the Hermit card - she uses (pg. 147 ed. 2 guidebook) Sumerian astrology. Make of that what you will.

For Mary-El, going by number for the pips is a better idea because the numbers are thematically related, especially 4,5,6,7 and 10. She often refers to the card right before as well, which can justify her ordering of the suits as wands-swords-cups-disks.
By the way, definitely read the whole guidebook even if you are not gong to read with the deck. It borrows from many different traditions, myths and occult beliefs at once.

Ocean. I have a hard time explaining my connection to this deck but it is palpable. She is a fevered dream. A vision of heaven and hell where all manner of angels and demons reside. She is our collective unconscious. She is Galadriel. “In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

I would say is a Shamanic deck, this is the best way I can put it. But I don't mean new shamanic, I mean very old shamanic. Well, I do have something to say, but OCEAN!
Regarding reading books: I do have to actively make time to read and I do tend to choose reading over screen time. That is a challenge for me.
Regarding the Mary El Tarot: this deck rips me out of my comfort zone. I get lost in the art style of the deck. I want it to provoke me. I want it to evoke a visceral reaction. There are hundreds of decks on the market that feel mundane; that are calming; that are pretty. I don’t need any more of that. I don’t see anything “typical“ about this deck. It is gut wrenching in many respects. And that is what I love about it.
And regarding the guidebook…I find it intriguing and evocative to say the least. These days, that is all I can ask from a deck. I’m all about being challenged by a deck. These are just my reactions to the deck itself, not to your video or your opinions.
And thank you for turning me onto Mahavishnu orchestra. I looked them up on Spotify while you were talking, and I am totally in love!
Thank you for sharing another wonderful thought-provoking video!

I've got the second edition few weeks ago and I am enjoying it a lot. I always try to see the artists view and yes I do read the guidebooks. It is definitely an ocean to explore if you know what I mean! There is a lot information though... sometimes I feel overwhelmed. ❤

I love the Mary-El Tarot. Have the second edition and it is very deep and I reallly look into it for more profound readings. Not so much for the average tarot question. Havind said that, I have some problems with its systems. It's a little messed up. Like, her tree of live correspondence is different from what we see on both thoth and RWS. On the Mary-el we have the magician as Aleph, instead of the Fool. It makes a lot of difference when you see the symbols just a "house ahead" of what you are used too. She doesn't even have a table to make that easy for you, I got that from her texts. Sometimes she makes reference to the sephiroth when talking about the majors, while normaly they are associated with the minors and the majors with the pathways bewteen that. For what I know, that system she uses is in the same vain with what we see on Eliphas Levi "Dogma And Ritual", as he associates de the magician with Aleph and puts the fool somewhere else (it's not even in the end!). And he seems to be a dear reference to Mary White, as we see on the 9 of Disks with his Baphomet. Also, when I read her minors, I prefer to look them as in tune with the Marseille, as a sequence ou "evolution", rather than the thoth system, for example.

Right! I had heard that Mary-El took a lot from traditional Marseille system, even though it is not a Marseille (obviously) and it is not traditional 😁 Thanks for sharing

The reason I adore this deck is because I see it as an amalgamation of the classic deck systems. It embodies the energy of the Marseille, Thoth, and RWS, but it's still its own system. I'm a Scorpio and to me this deck has always been the quintessential Scorpio deck... deep and complex, mysterious, powerful, sensual, intense, etc. Like the ocean. I actually prefer the 2nd edition. I just cant do the glossy oversized cardstock and i dont mind the re-done art.
