I went into Kmart yesterday (Big Kmart, in MA), and it was like walking into a time warp. 80s looking and Madonna playing on the overheard

They all haven’t been updated and the buildings where decaying and their prices where lousy and sold mostly junk they should have bought into themselves instead of buying other companies that they sold in 1995

Imagine what Kmart would look like today if they never bought out a bunch of companies that put them billions in debt. They would probably still be competing with Walmart, Target, and other retailers. A lot of people think it was Walmart, but not really. They kept buying companies out left and right, and Sears was the last one that they purchased. They thought since they were the second biggest retailer in 2000 that they would be able to make more money by purchasing other stores that were going bankrupt. Not a good idea. It lead to the big downfall for Kmart. They also had/has terrible customer service, making customers not happy. My childhood in the 90’s and early 2000’s was spent shopping at Kmart with my family. I used to act like the white floor was lava, and the blue tiles were safe. Good memories!

@@Commenter839 The atmosphere is "elevator music". (Which they also happened to play.) It can be either the most boring thing in the world or the most relaxing. To me, even as a kid, it was always incredibly a relaxing feeling to walk around Kmart.

I remember riding the kids ride in front of Kmart in 89 then going in and eating in the cafe the blt was amazing. And if you were lucky the blue light special would be announced awe the 80s it was a great time stores were opening not closing! Thanks Anthony for documenting Kmart the wall paper and signage were rad that was a nice store Id shop there ,it shouldnt be closing!

This looks very similar to the Super K that was in Amherst, OH except that store layout was reversed. The grocery was on the right side and the garden center was on the left. It opened in 1993 and closed in 2016. It was demolished in Jan. 2018. Meijer announced they were building a superstore there by 2020. We'll see.

I was lucky to live near the Round Lake Beach Super Kmart. Miss them dearly... for a Kmart it was clean, well-lit, decently stocked, and one of the few stores I could go to at any time of the day, find what I needed at the same(ish) price as Walmart in the neighboring shopping center, it would still be dead half the time. Today the building is vacant except around Halloween, there's a Meijer at the old Walmart shopping center, and Walmart moved a short distance north. Meijer is an acceptable replacement, but Walmart has since become an abysmal shopping experience.

You talking about the one in Illinois? We used to have two Kmarts near by around that area but both closed. One Kmart was just turned into a high school/college prep school with new open ceiling lighting, updated front color design with tons of windows and a open interior space design.

The Super K-Mart that existed here used to have a smaller game room than this one in Ohio. But it was shut down about 10 years ago. It also had a sit down restaurant called the Islander, nice for the employees because of the discount.
That restaurant shuttered during the bankruptcy in the early 2000's.
It also had a bank, an Olan Mills Portrait Studios and a hair salon. The bank closed first, then the hair salon, and then the portrait studio the most recent departure.
The super aspect of this K-mart was yanked 5 years ago, and it barely clings to life now.
    Store #4928, Queensbury, NY.

  • @AmyraCarter
    @AmyraCarter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The Kmart near me closed last year. The building was falling apart. Ceiling leaked and the floor was even warped in spots. There was never anyone in there even before they announced it was going under. They ended up splitting it into 3 stores (harbor freight, Gabe’s, and petco). Only been in the harbor freight since but they did very little to the building. Still has the Kmart black and white floors (still warped and discolored in spots and you can still see evidence on the walls that it used to be a Kmart. Haven’t been in Gabe’s or petco but I imagine it’s the same. On a brighter note, the roof doesn’t seem to leak anymore.

My local Kmart (Jackson Wyoming) just closed Sunday 2/16/2020. It had been in town since 1991. On the same day our small Luckys Market (mid-price organic foods) closed for good as well. Two retail outlets in a small , albeit affluent mountain town closing on the same day is a blow to our economy and shopping options. We now have to drive 110 miles to Idaho Falls Idaho for a WalMart or Target type store.

It is sad to see what has become of this once great Michigan brand that was a huge part of my childhood. I drive by the former HQ of KMart in Troy, MI all the time and would love to see that building in use again as it is such a huge building with a fairly interesting architectural presence slowly rotting away. Kmart is my favorite store. I grew up in the 80s and 90s going there primarily for all our shopping (other than groceries). Wal-Mart didn't hit my home state until I was a teenager, and I have never liked Wal-Mart as much as Kmart (though I've made my peace with it). My hometown had 4 very nicely kept up Kmarts. It saddens me that they are dying a slow death. None of our Kmart were Super. I only visited a Super Kmart once, in another county. I was impressed. I miss Kmart a lot. It saddens me.

It's sad, I would rather shop at Kmart, and still was until my local store closed. I wish Kmart had continued updating/repairing their stores, this was needed in the first decade of the 2000's.

We lost our K mart in Fayetteville NC last year. Two years prior was the last time I went in there. You could feel the decay of a dying corporation inside, but hey. I gotta good deal on storage boxes!
I just found this channel yesterday and I subscribed. Good quality content, guys. Will consider being a Patreon in the future :) keep up the great work :D

It was sad when the 2 kmarts in my town shut down. I still have the original nintendo my parents bought for me from the maple ave. Kmart here in zanesville, OH. Those were the days when you cpuld take the system off the shelf rather than wait for an employee witb a key to remove it from a glass display.
Thanks for the early morning video! Keep up the great work buddy!

This should have been one of the last stores to close it doesn't make sense that they closed all their super Kmarts and modern concept stores and left their old dilapidated stores open it's almost like they don't want to make money.

they cant compete of food prices considering they have to be buying from a independent food wholesaler as they cant run their own food warehouse for 1 store

They buy their food from supervalue which is basically based out of MN now with one of their last out of state store being the local cubs food in Freeport IL. U can only imagine the shipping it costed SHC to have supervalu ship the food to these stores. Cubs food used to be in indiana and Ohio but after Kroger has beat them on price for food.
Edit: that cubs food is also one of the busiest grocery store in the surrounding area. especially after multiple people in Freeport got sick from the food at Wal-Mart.

In respect to Wallmart at that center, I've seen a anchor store refuse to open their mall entrance and only use their own outside entrance and what the end result was. In th end the mall closed and the anchor store was forced to relocate, in that case they ended up going to another suburb entirely. If they're interested in staying they need to open that entrance.

Just sad! I'll be 46 this year,I've seen these department stores all go in my lifetime. Clearly the main reasons are the recession in the 80's,Walmart!!!,internet shopping ...but the main reason is those in charge of Kmart. Those that make decisions ,planning and more importantly...MERCHANDISING!!long ago as a child,Kmart had everything !..as he ge years went by,what Kmart failed to do ,was change with the times! The clothing is hideous, the shoes are so fucking ugly and cheap, there are no employees in departments,on the floor ... after I graduated high school,I even worked in one for a short time. The toy industry is also at fault as toys today fucking suck, but toys were always a huge attraction in stores like Kmart,Gold Circle,Zayers,Rinks,Hills,Ames etc. networks stopped Saturday morning cartoons which hand in hand with toys had parents and kids flocking to department stores. I'll never understand how Kmart couldn't compete ?

As a kid growing up in the late 60's and 70's, I use to ride my bike from home to K-Mart some 15 miles. K-Mart was king! Then in 1983 one of my college friends asked me if I wanted to go with him to Walmart. My response was what is a Walmart? Over the years, Walmart ate K-Marts' breakfast, lunch and dinner!

We don't have a "Super K-Mart" locally. Our last K-Mart was a 90's regular K-Mart that closed years ago, primarily to Wal*Mart becoming a "Super Walmart" and eating away at the customer base. I always liked K-Mart better than Wal*Mart.

Sad to say, but I think that K-Mart is destroying themselves with too many closures. They are destroying the brand, which is not something you do when popularity and familiarity brings in customers. Sure, they could have closed some of their underperforming stores, but now they are closing money makers for them to the point it doesn't make any sense.

We had a few K-Marts where I grew up. One in particular was very ICONIC for me. In Milwaukee, actually Greenfield, Wl. there was a Target on the South side of 27th and Layton Ave, and on the other side or North side of Layton right by the I-94, 794 freeway on ramps sat our K-Mart. This was before the "Super-K" and all that💩💩💩💩💩!! I can remember the Blue Light Specials, getting a big *ss pretzel, or a ICEE drink. Blueberry or Cherry. They had a little restaurant in the back. To the right side when you walked in was the Toy Department. The first thing you saw was the return desk and then the snack bar. Straight back was the restaurant. Left was automotive & hardware and again right was Toys and Sporting goods. I may be a bit off this was 1975-76+. It was a great store. I really like it. I do remember kids saying poor kids wore K-Mart clothes. So many memories!

I used to work at a KMart in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for two years and I wouldn't shop there, I shopped at Walmart because of price, pure and simple PRICE. I used to make fun of the saying "attention KMart shoppers" on the store microphone after we closed at night. I had fun working there but it was very depressing, after 7:00 pm there might be two customers in the whole huge ass store. I got to be really friendly with our store manager Brenda Epps and she was so understanding. Sometimes I miss working there!
