    I remember hearing Jazz guitarist Mike Stern say when he was Rock/Blues guitarist and wanted to get into Jazz he took Giant Steps and spend a year work on it from every approach he could. Doing a really deep dive on one song like Stella or Giant Steps and can really a lot.

    So, in summary (16:28), the most important things are :
    1) World peace
    2) Vaccine for the Coronavirus
    3) Knowing the form of Giant Steps
    Amen!
    Love these guys!

    One thing that sounds cool is to focus on the dominant 7 chord in a bar and play an altered dominant scale. So for the first bar you're playing D altered dominant over the Bmaj7 as well as the D and you can still hit a lot of chord tones plus it gives you that altered sound. Also allows you to focus on a scale rather than harmonically.
    Great video, guys!

    Love this!
    BUT!
    These approaches are all great and super useful but they all reinforce the "getting kicked around by the changes" thing because it's SO vertical, which plays into the main criticism of this tune - that it sounds like an etude or exercise.
    I'd love to see you guys to a video on playing more lyrically / horizontally through GS changes. (I probably need to search through your videos as, knowing you guys, you've probably already done it!)
    Thanks again for the great content!

    Just think Tommy Flanagan sight read Giant Steps on the recording session and turned out a very good solo. A testimony to his talent and also the cruelty of John Coltrane …

    • @Hiphopdabop
      @Hiphopdabop ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing cruel about it. It was a recording date like any record date . If Coltrane thought Flanagan would not cut it, he would have called someone else.

    Here's another one: the same whole tone scale, let's call it C, works surprisingly well over all the ii-vs in the tune so you can play around with alternating between the major chords and the C whole tone scale.

    I'm a piano Noobie so this was so far out of my pay grade the bartender didn't even give me complimentary peanuts. I'll come back when I earn my chops.
    But I'm also colour blind and I had a hard time with seeing the black notes, especially with that blue-ish colour. If you could, a bright yellow or orange would be easier to see.
    If it interests you, I was a Chiropractor in Switzerland that had to change my techniques due to a shoulder injury and cut on too many times. I now have a FURS syndrome. But I got real good at treating other people's shoulders. And I'm in the process of putting out a video for exercises and self treatments for pianists. Low back but also shoulders and hands. Especially good for finger strength.
    Stay tuned.

    How do you feel about the hack where you straight-up ignore the ii-V in the middle of the cycle and just play like a bVI-V7-I? For example the first passage being B-D7-G-Bb7-Eb - toss out the D7-G and just play B-Bb7-Eb. At tempo you're not gonna get caught by most listeners but your musician friends might tell you you're being a dick lol. Do you have strong feelings on that or no? Is it better or worse than the "JP Morgan" chromatics lol

    right now I found this comment (originally about saxophone players): not only is it difficult for the musician to improvise at that speed, it's very difficult for the listener to listen at that speed!
    Sorry to say, but all those hacks lead to a style of playing that may be impressive, but not beautiful. Music must be beautiful imho.

    Big Coltrane is watching, so be ready! One of these nights the jackbooted jazz police will knock down your door in the wee hours demanding you play a few choruses. Should you fail to kill, they're going to torture you with forced listening sessions to John Denver's greatest hits! So practice, damn it! 😠

    I like giant steps and I like Adam and Peter. They both play well. These short lessons are definitely not for beginners. Even intermediate players will find it taught very fast. To fast I’d say. Really advanced player students will have the most benefit.
    I certainly can’t play like these guys and don’t consider myself advanced. Probably more an intermediate player. Lucky for me I can pick up on a little of this watching there left hand movement and hearing certain chord qualities. So I get some benefit and I’m grateful. But I wonder really who are they trying to reach or teach. They certainly can impress one with their chops and that has its good points. But maybe someone can tell me what and who this is for? I’m sure Adam and Peter will never reply to comments. At least I’ve never seen that and I follow them always. Personally I would love it if they’ve would slow it down, go through a 4 note or 3 note RH pattern through a section of the tune form. Maybe a screen shot of 4 or 8 bars? Or maybe I’m asking for to much. If I new what they were trying to accomplish with these short lessons I would just shut up.

    • @thejohn6040
      @thejohn6040 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's definitely smth for more advanced players. But on TH-cam, luckily, you can rewind, pause, slow down etc. So that will help The less advanced players. And of course each step of these podcasts takes a while to work on if it's a totally new concept for the player. If you want it more slow, guided and in depth you should sign up for the courses they have on openstudio!

    • @wandamusictube

      Some of their videos have exercises notated along with the progressions. Makes it easy to follow. There is another one for Giant steps with an entire lesson packet.
      I would imagine people that like their approach will sign up for the courses.
