The Thar Desert covers an area of 44.6 million hectare (mha), of which 27.8 mha lie in India and the rest in Pakistan. The desert is bounded by the Aravalli hills in the east, by the fertile Indus and the Nara valleys of Pakistan and the salt marsh of the Rann of Kutch in the west, and by the alluvial plains of Haryana and Punjab in the north.
पानी मानव जीवन की पहली जरूरत है- फिर वह चाहे स्वास्थ्य और जीवित रहने के लिये हो या फिर खाद्य उत्पादन और दूसरी आर्थिक गतिविधियों के लिये। बढ़ती हुई जनसंख्या की खाद्यान्न आपूर्ति व तेजी से हो रहे औद्योगिक विकास के कारण जल उपलब्धता की स्थिति दिन प्रतिदिन अत्यंत विकट होती जा रही है। पानी की सर्वाधिक समस्या के संदर्भ में भारत में राजस्थान राज्य का नाम विशेष रूप से उल्लेखनीय है। भौगोलिक क्षेत्रफल की दृष्टि से राजस्थान भारत का सबसे बड़ा राज्य है लेकिन औसत वार्षिक वर्षा के आधार से यह सबसे अंतिम है।
अकाल के दौरान न केवल खाने की अपितु पीने के पानी की भी भयंकर कमी हो जाती है। रेगिस्तानी क्षेत्रों में प्राय: पानी गहराई पर मिलता है व ऊँटों को जोतकर चरस से पानी निकाला जाता है। गहराई के कारण यहाँ के कुएँ सांठी के कहलाते थे। प्राचीन काल में आधुनिक साधनों के अभाव में भूजल दोहन बहुत मुश्किल होता था। अत: जल संग्रहण यहाँ की परम्परा रही। सन 1960 तक जल के संदर्भ में यहाँ की स्थिति ठीक रही। यहाँ के निवासियों ने जल संग्रहण के अनेक तरीके यथा टांका, नाडा, नाडी, कुई, कुंड, तालाब, बावड़ी, कुएँ खड़ीन आदि अपनाये। इन सभी संरचनाओं में टांके का एक महत्त्वपूर्ण स्थान है।
टांका एक प्रकार का छोटा ऊपर से ढका हुआ भूमिगत खड्डा होता है इसका प्रयोग मुख्यत: पेयजल के लिये वर्षाजल संग्रहण हेतु किया जाता है। टांका आवश्यकता व उद्देश्य विशेष के अनुसार कहीं पर भी बनाया जा सकता है। परम्परागत तौर पर निजी टांके प्राय: घर के आंगन या चबूतरों में बनाये जाते हैं, जबकि सामुदायिक टांकों का निर्माण पंचायत भूमि में किया जाता है। चूँकि टांके वर्षाजल संग्रहण के लिये बनाये जाते हैं इसलिये इनका निर्माण आंगन/चबूतरे या भूमि के प्राकृतिक ढाल की ओर सबसे निचले स्थान में किया जाता है।
परम्परागत रूप से टांके का आकार चौकोर, गोल या आयताकार भी हो सकता है। जिस स्थान का वर्षाजल टांके में एकत्रित किया जाता है उसे पायतान या आगोर कहते हैं और उसे वर्ष भर साफ रखा जाता है। संग्रहित पानी के रिसाव को रोकने के लिये टांके के अन्दर चिनाई की जाती है।
उपरोक्त सूत्र में प्रति व्यक्ति प्रतिदिन का जल खर्च पीने व खाना बनाने की आवश्यकतानुसार 7 लीटर लिया गया है। पशुओं के लिये औसतन 25 लीटर पानी प्रति पशु प्रतिदिन के हिसाब से वार्षिक गणना की गई है। पौधों के लिये सामान्यता वर्षाऋतु का समय छोड़कर शेष समय के लिये जीवन रक्षक सिंचाई के आधार पर क्षमता का निर्धारण किया गया है।

They can use a siphons and wind turbines to draw water from main channel and then let in smaller ones
