    This is what we do as a society (read recent comments)...we judge. "He's anxious" and "I wish I had that low debt, how can he be scared..he must need his hand held" … He was courageous to call Dave and he'll be better off one day than a lot of the judgy people who left critical comments, I'm betting. Let's support our brothers doing the right thing and also causing great encouragement to be left for us. You listened to it. Save the snarky comments. Work on your own debt people. Ciao.

    I work for a finance company and I see numbers like this all the time. Just because he has a good salary and very little debt, does not mean he's good with money, or knows how to handle the money that he is earning. Plus we don't know anything about his expenses and/or obligations. Most people spend every cent they earn. I think its good he's reaching out to Dave, he is trying to change.

    I agree with some of the commenters here... 1) being single the baby steps are not as straight forward.... 2) living in high expense area can make taking the initial steps terrifying 3) there are few videos for a) Single People, b) Seniors (I'm 70) the 4th and last point, is I'm in Canada, and some things don't translate the same from Tennessee or Mississippi but I'm trying... very :D
    Came across Dave's programs last week, when I was trying to decide whether to save/or pay off debt and which debt... just listening to him gives me quiet confidence to keep at it... btw, I'm an atheist, and it seems funny listening to a "preacher" talking sense about money, and not pushing for donations.... he convinced me... ok, enough running at the mouth... good luck everyone... cheers dc

    I roughly followed Dave's plan and it worked fine for me. I wasn't comfortable with only 1000 in savings, so I didn't. I left 25k in there and 1 week later i was furloughed for almost exactly 6 months.
    Listen to your gut and be an adult.

    When I started with Dave's baby steps (Early 2018) I was 11k in student loans and 17k in a Car loan and about $1,500 credit card loans. I paid it all off in 6 months once I started going crazy on my debt. But when I was done for a while I felt a little lost, like I didn't know what to do. But once I started beefing up my emergency fund to 20k it gave another goal. And now I'm in baby step 3b, saving for a down payment and this goal is 20% of a home in my area in Southern California which 20% is 100K. That is my next goal. I think its important to make goals and once you hit them make sure you have another goal waiting for you.

    It's amazing the degree to which people nurse their debts and go full Stockholm syndrome with them-dude, if you owe 4,000 to have 3,000, what you _really_ have is _negative_ 1,000; you're not _safe_ in any way by being in hole that gets progressively deeper. That's the opposite of safe; that's a sinking ship.
    Right now, you have nothing; and owe a thousand; and is enduring a ship with a nasty leaky hull by paying interest on more than your net liabilities. This makes no sense; it also makes you prone to spend and consume more than you should-which for, people who are in the negative, is always the bare minimum. Not "I'm doing pretty good, I have 3k saved, I'm safe, I should have a daily latte-mocca-frappo-hipsto-coffay."

    sucker can do cookie dough too, but a spoon and bowl is easier to clean.

I currently have $19k in the bank and have a total household income of $80k with no kids.... my plan is to get new windows for my house this year (approximately $5k) and use my written budget with a $1000 a month spending limit including groceries and by next year I should be able to pay my car completely off and still have over $10k in the bank.... • @fazdoll
      @fazdoll 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're the only one that gets it! It's the same concept that many people call in with -- they know that $1000 is not enough of an emergency fund, no matter what Dave says. Sure, the caller is "in the hole," but he's not in the hole all at once. At any moment, he could get a huge bill that he has to pay all at once. But he can pay off his $4200 a little at a time. Which is why he doesn't want to deplete his cash.
      One option is to get a credit card with a low limit like $5K, but keep it safe and don't use it. That can serve as your "emergency fund" so you can deplete cash to pay off debt. The trick is that you can't use the card at all. (Some people advocate freezing the card in a block of ice, so you have to physically melt it to use it.) Dave will never advise someone to keep a credit card because he knows most people can't resist using it. But, if you are disciplined, it can serve as an emergency fund.

    • @chrisstaub5880
      @chrisstaub5880 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, Dave has said before that $1,000 is NOT supposed to be enough and SHOULD make you scared. The starter emergency fund is deliberately meant to be small because:
      1. Dave has mentioned that many people he talks to have never had that much saved before, so saving even $1,000 can, for some people, at first appear very difficult. By keeping this initial amount relatively small, it's more of an attainable goal.
      2. Being nervous and scared about the small size of the security blanket helps provide motivation to pay off the debt and move to the next step as quickly as possible.
      Yes, it's possible that some people wouldn't necessarily need this motivation to change their money behavior, but then most people fitting that description wouldn't need to be asking Dave's advice in the first place.

      @MarokoJin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I'm from a third world country and I didn't want to scale it to my own economic circumstances.
      The reason is simple: I can go by the fifth because I earn much less than the US average but our emergencies need at least 1000 dollars, especially (God forbid) for medical emergencies ... Same goes for utilities: they cost the same as in first world countries (phones,cars are even more expensive because these things are imported!) But our average salaries are 10 times less!

      We all have different battles to fight. I have significant PTSD from my parents’ bankruptcy when I was a high schooler that left us homeless. You don’t know his history; you don’t know what makes him scared at night. $2000 is a big chunk of money; think about how many people struggle to save even $1000 and think it is a huge hurdle. Not all of us can throw that much at our debt each month (like many I see do on instagram). Ratios of debt to income are more important than the actual size. He needed someone to shine a light on his situation and I am glad Dave did it without being as judgmental as you.

      Just follow the baby steps....live below your means...stop spending on what is not actually needed....buy ur groceries cook at home eat leftovers for lunch dont go out so u save on gas stop all shopping and any entertainment...review your bank statements to see where your money was going....If you want to really get control of your situation you will go for it...watch financial videos , minimalist vidsos...etc good luck 💙

    this guy is rediculous. I can sympathize with living in New York. I pay $2000 for rent, but he has no real debt. I was 45k in the I'm down to 25k. it's been 4 years 3 kids in the process with a stay at home mom. through my experience living in NY $1000 emergency fund is not enough with the cost of living. a gallon of milk is $5...enough said. but I'm doing it on my own.

      1k may be enough in Nashville, but not enough in large Urban areas like NYC, Philly, LA, Miami or Chicago! Agree with you here! Cost of living is higher in cities!

      My wife was not having it. She said she will do it but we need an emergency fund of 7k. In order to get her on board I did it. I can't blame her, if I unexpectedly lose my job God forbid I can pay the rent for 3 months.

      The $1000 is just the start and baby step 1. Once all debts are paid, then you build that $1000 to 3-6 months worth of expenses

      I'm in the same case as you and I'm (after changing for a better job) at 7200 dollars a year.
      But I lived for a couple of years in a developped country, his fear is legitimate because he's afraid to find himself starving with no savings.

      Maybe he doesn't have some support the same way we have in our countries , I mean by that family and friends support.
      We are quite lucky lol because most of us have strong social bonds (we still have the tribe mentality going strong eventhough it's weakened due to social changes).
