How to transfer benchmark with Dumpy Level

I appreciate your good work. You are really helping us. I have a question please. The question is how do you establish the first one meter before transferring it round other pillars. Do you measure the first one with tape from the floor. Before transferring others with dumpy Level?

I always add 5cm to it to cater for the finishing floor materials.
