  • Most of you know what I majored in but what you don't know is that I changed my major! When I first started university, I was studying Economics and Finance and after a few months I changed my major. It was a defining period in my life, during which I learned a lot about myself and about what I want to do and who I want to be. It was also nerve-wracking and terrifying and I wish I had watched a video on how to deal with this process and what to know about it.
That's why I made this video for you. I know how tough it can be to transition and what difficulties you might face. I hope that my experience and the questions I asked you will help you make your decision and will make the whole experience that much easier.
Let me know down in the comments what you study, if you enjoy your major and if you're considering changing it (or if you've changed it already). We can all learn from each other's experience so feel free to share!
I talk you through the process via answering the following questions:
    1. Why do you want to quit?
    2. Is there any way you can make it work?
    3. Is it the major or is it the career?
    4. Was it truly your choice?
    5. What is the cost of you quitting?
    6. Can you talk about it with an impartial and trusted person?
    7. What is your vision of yourself?

I'm in a strange place. I started this computer science degree out of interest from me. And the classes are still somewhat interesting, and I don't mind them and can finish them without trouble. But the big thing is that I just can't see myself going into any computer science career. Like software engineering, web development just doesn't seem like my dream job. I'm not sure what it is but it's not that. I'm thinking of switching to Philosophy, and yeah I'm scared of "wasting" the time I've spent on these classes.

I'm going through a similar struggle right now as well,, been told to get into CompSci, currently in my 3rd year and I realized I don't see myself having a career in front of a screen for most of my life. It's been making me depressed but after thinking about it, I'm aiming to finish to get my Bachelor's degree so I can invest in either Forensic Science or Forensic Pathology courses! I wish everyone success and that we all end up being where we want to be,, we're in this together

I'm a junior high student and I want to study philology but my parent's approval doesn't meet with mine. I don't want to be unhappy or miserable and study a major that will make me feel not myself just for the money and a better job.
Love you Laura as always! 💗👼

I'm currently majoring in architecture. It's such a stressful major and the classes are too much for me. The only reason I decided to major in it is becuase my parents (mainly my mom) didn't approve of me majoring in art, so I felt that architecture was similar to what I really wanted to do. I've already spoken to my mom about me not being really happy with this major, but she felt that it was best I continue the program. I failed one of the classes that the program requires and had to take it again this summer just for me to do even worst than the first time (laziness played a huge part). I am already behind with the classes I need to take in order to graduate on time and at this point, I think it's best I change my major now before things get worst than it already is.

As the world started changing around me I realized I wanted to follow that change and support the environmental movement. I began as an artist and started with an Art education major. Which was something I was passionate but I felt kind of sad and uninspired. The lifestyle wasn't a good fit for me. I later changed colleges and switched to environmental studies and resource management.

I have connected so much with all this video... I’ve been feeling really unhappy with my degree, which is also Economics, since the first year, but I don’t know why, I’ve come to be in my third year... There’s still one year more to go, and I feel so unmotivated... But now everyone says “just finish it, and then you can study another degree”. But I just feel that this extra year will make me miserable as I have been feeling these years, and now I know what I REALLY want to study and be... It’s so hard.
Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your experience, it helps knowing you are not the only one going through these kind of decisions...

Ainhoa, I’m here for you if you need me ❤️ These are big, life-changing decisions but I know that after you’ve made them (either to change your degree or to stay and finish it), you know that you made them because it’s what you actually want to do. You start living more authentically and you feel like you finally know how to live your life your way. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you 😘

Thank you for making this video. It came at the right time for me, as I'm currently contemplating changing my university. I'm studying computer science, and I chose it because I thought it would teach me skills that would enable me to create something big. But I've realized I'm not naturally interested in it very much, and I don't really enjoy it when it goes in depth, so I'm not doing well in college. There's a lot to consider before I make my decision. I will think about the questions in this video, I'm sure it'll help!

I'm so glad I found this video. I am in a stressful state right now. I already spent 2 years as an accountancy student but it's just not for me. I'm not happy here, and I find it boring working in an office in the future. I just don't see my self working as an accountant. And family pressure is really true they want me to finish this program but I'm just so drained. I want to transfer to biology because I've always loved science and I want to work as a doctor in the future. I finally decided that their happiness is the least of my priorities.

Great advice. I started my degree in English, linguistics because of your advice. Please do a linguistic video as what to expect with classes, such as group projects, independent projects, expectation of essays or research, fulfillment of this degree, will there be observation labs, or anything related to this degree. Please don’t repeat what classes or modules but more of a student’s expectation. Thank you.

I really want to change my degree cuz ever since i joined college ive been feeling so miserable and depressed. All ive gotten was anxiety and self hate...I loathe myself to death for ever choosing this course...its completely different from my personality and has severely impacted my self esteem and confidence. I really dk what i want to do but i know i dont belong there at all. Its not hard if i put in the work but i lack motivation to even wake up in the mornings to study. Ive been so torn and depressed this past year and haven't truly celebrated anything cuz i was in a dilemma. Hopefully i know what i want soon so i can leave this shithole

I’m in a confusing situation: I’m majoring in languages, a subject I enjoy, but I can’t see myself working with something language graduates typically work with and enjoying myself. When I chose my language degree I was actually still hesitating between that and a degree in literature and it feels like I dismissed a degree in literature too quickly.

    • @LauraMaliszewska
      @LauraMaliszewska  ปีที่แล้ว

thank you for your comment! I'd ask myself what the actual profession I want to do is and what could get me there starting now. BUT you're not limited to working in the areas that every language graduate typically works at ;)
when I'd be asked about what I wanted to do after graduation (as an English Language and Literature major), I was torn between doing a PhD in Linguistics (I LOVED IT and it was a safe choice) oooor actually pursuing my desire and becoming a filmmaker (that was pre You-Tube!) and you can see my journey here - I'd applied to do my PhD and I'm in Film School now and I'm the happiest. BUT I knew that no matter what I studied, my degree was gonna help me in every single way it can to help me get to my dream life.
you can do anything you want it in this life. you're gonna figure it out! sending you so much love xx

I’m currently in the same situation. I’m also an Economics student, done with my first year into the course, but it’s my second year in uni since I already changed major once before. This decision was mainly mine, but this wasn’t the business major course that I wanted to take up. I wanted marketing. Since this was the closest one, I ended up choosing it instead.
Now, I’m in this situation again where I realized this degree isn’t really for me, not only is it too difficult, but I don’t see handling datas and making statistical analysis as my future career + I suck at math. I’m still making up my mind whether or not I’ll stay or pursue the degree I think I’d really grow in (English or Marketing)
I still haven’t made my decision but the semester is almost ending so I’m re-examining myself so I would not make the same mistake again. It’s a difficult decision because it feels like I’ve wasted 2years of uni taking the courses I ended up not liking.

Honestly I only went for education major is because a teacher said I could see you being a teacher. I knew I wanted to teach but like not in Florida. I looked up EPIK program and saw that getting any degree it's good to get an education degree but the teacher certification became really stressful and making my mental health shaking. I am changing my major to general studies I just want to teach in south Korea. I have had a lot of doubts about my major yet I just thought to keep going. Maybe one day I'll pick up again but right now I don't want it.

2 years ago I decided to study Law cuz I didn’t really know what I wanted to be, I thought It would be good for me, I’m an A student I did well in all my classes but I just realized that I hate it I was trying to convince myself that I was just burnt out from studying but I knew deep down I wasn’t happy and I decided this summer to change my major and I told my parents and friends they don’t understand what I’m going through most of them told me to just finish it cuz I only have 2 years to finish and then do something else if I want but it’s been only 3 days since the beginning of the new semester and whenever I’m in class or just the thought of studying these subjects for more 2 years makes me want to die, I just don’t like the subjects and if you’re studying law you should study in the language of your country cuz the laws are written in that language *arabic in my case* I just hate itttt I always liked english and I was passionate about learning the language and I always imagined myself studying a program in English. I don’t know what to do tbh but it’s affecting my daily life and I’m always overthinking and I don’t feel well :(

Took up Landscape Architecture because I loved art, engineering, and science in high school. Two years later in college and I realize I don’t like plants and science as much as I thought, the major is mainly just being a sales person of a design which isn’t great for my GAD, and I’m not satisfied with the work atmosphere.
