The Good People (Na Daoine Maithe) is a lore-rich and choice-driven romantic visual novel inspired by Irish mythology. Play as an Irish tenant farmer from the mid-19th century, whose path becomes inexplicably entwined with fairy affairs after getting robbed by the roadside and lured into the mythic and war-torn world of Tír na nÓg: A once unified land, now divided into the Seelie and Unseelie Courts. Will you escape with your stolen belongings? Or does fate have something else in mind?

This is repugnant. Don't use one of the worst chapters in deliberate genocide in the history of my nation (There are plenty of others) as the flavour text backdrop to you game.

Hello! We apologize if that was the impression our trailer produced, but we want to emphasize that the famine is not a "flavour text backdrop" to our game, but rather central to the anti-colonial themes and story of the game itself. While I cannot (for hopefully obvious reasons) explain in depth how we intend to approach the famine in the totality of our game, I want to state why we chose 1845 as the setting:
When first going into the creation of this game, our team had a singular goal in mind: To explore the untouched or ignored aspects of Irish mythology (e.g. the Tuatha Dé Danann), since the general, mainstream impression of Irish myths is largely watered down to pixies and leprechauns - which do the myths a massive disservice.
But here’s the thing: Irish mythology, as you are undoubtedly aware, has been highly influenced by colonial forces. Most of the historical texts still available to us were written by Christian monks, who reshaped these "pagan beliefs" in order to fit within the doctrine of Christianity for conversion purposes - and as a consequence of this, the original tales are largely lost or a matter of academic speculation. In knowing this, we could not in good conscience tell a story about Irish mythology, so deeply entwined with the historic oppression of Ireland in its intentional erasure, without addressing the elephant in the room: England and the myriad of evil acts, including the famine, committed against the people of Ireland.
We hope this clarified our intentions.

@@moiraimyths This is not an explanation. At any point in the years between 1169 and 1921, or hell even the last 100 years, you could set this game but you picked this. This was not the only instance of colonial shit happening. This would not be improved by it happening during Cromwell's purges, the plantations, 1798, the war for independence, the civil war or a dozen other explicitly terrible events in the history of this nation. How dare you.

@@joeavreg2254I am sorry but then there could be no films, games and drama plays anything related to history. It is unfortunate but human history is beset with horrors. I played the demo and it shows to people especially outside or Ireland something we are not told often, the mistreatment of the Irish by the Crown, nobility and the English altogether. It does point out the hunger and conditions your ancestors to suffer. I would say it is similar to the Anthropoid (hope that's the name), it is set in WW2 and it's about the assasination (and the horrible revenge for the assasination) of Heydrich, the man in charge of the Bohemian/Moravian Protector, it's a story about people set in the background of a great tragedy. It's not pleasant but we understand it can showcase what has been done to our people. And I am sure that was a similar intention here as well

@@nikolasgrots3468 That's not how that works. If they were making a story *About* what happened then I would only worry about accuracy and if they chose to deliberately pull punches or gloss over things like how the Famine wasn't a Famine since there was still food made and exported (More than enough to feed the entire nation with plenty to spare) but it isn't. This is window dressing that serves no purpose because You leave immediately. Keep in mind this didn't stop in till 1850 which means the story, as told, either has the character leave the "Fae banging" scenario to return to five more years of this, a lingering death of disease or hunger like many of their family, getting onto a coffin ship where they were possibly murdered by the crew and dumped over board, died in the hold during the crossing or wound up in the new world ready to be exploited once they get there, with the last option being they dump you out post deliberately exacerbated ethnic cleansing event so you can have a happy ending and refuse to acknowledge what happened while the character was gone.
This story could start with a person wandering around for firewood and passing through a faerie gate with and it would change nothing. It is grotesque and your justifications of it are just as grotesque. This would be like a wacky adventure during the period where the Nazis were starving Warsaw to save ammo.

@@joeavreg2254 but the mc does mention several times in the demo they need to return, it's their maingoal. And that's because they were the only hope of their family to get money/food. The mc is chasing their own horse because it contains their family's only valuables that they needed to sell in the town. Unfortunately the mc is then sent to the Otherworld. The game does tell you several times through the mc that the these times are horrendous and their own family must be afraid and that you the mc were their only chance of getting some money --food. Yes this looks like it's about romance but the troubles of the Real world are not just magically forgotten. They are even extended and showcased within the fae society too so the topics of discrimination and more importantly famine are there to see. I'll be honest it's pretty clear to see in the game so I am beginning to wonder if you have even tried the demo to see if the game is what you think it is
