- Since October, Houthi militants in Yemen have shot down five U.S.-operated MQ-9 Reapers. These unmanned aerial systems, larger than some planes, are primarily used for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), but they can also carry munitions, such as Hellfire missiles.

I think its funny when people believe that a drone designed in the late 1970’s is most advanced equipment is outright funny. The way America and DARPA works is whatever is going into production today. Is already having newer systems being developed at the same time. It seems like whenever the opponent destroys a piece of American military tech, it goes from being the most advanced military hardware on the planet, to an obsolete hunk of junk that anyone can buy at Walmart. I just looked up the price of these things, and just one costs $17 mil. Not exactly something you just want to throw away haphazardly, especially when they can be destroyed by cheap 60 year old Cold War Soviet era SAM systems.

I have no idea if the SA-6 was updated or not, a quick search shows there's a few variants along with an export variant that may or may not be a downgraded version. But who cares? It's still a very old, Soviet era system, hardly cutting edge at all. Strawman fallacy, never said the drones have the tech the F-35's have.

The Reaper has already been tested with the AIM Sidewinder missile. It needs to have a radar warning system and the ability to fire AGM88 missiles at these SAM sites, a basic SEAD/DEAD capability.

Good. Feedback from combat is key to developing next-gen UAS. Turkey also understands this and developed more advanced gen UAS rather than just selling early Bayraktars. Drones allow safe probing of opponent systems at trivial cost so everyone should be using them (Houthis included).

These are drones not stealth aircraft. They've always been vulnerable to radar guided missiles. The Houthis are using Iran missles so don't give hem too much credit.

The tech is fairly modern in that most armies use tech that is 20-30 years old. Some still use 60 year old tech. Please understand drones are slow moving targets. That’s why it’s so easy for them to get shot down. The United States answer to Soviet systems was two fold increase altitude and increase speed. There are military aircraft which would require the S300 and even S400 to shoot down. Including the F-22 and F-35 would most likely require the S400 although in some circumstances the S300 would be sufficient.
The US military has confirmed that the Houthis did conduct the attacks. It is highly likely that the Eisenhower was actually being hit but the damage was minimal, otherwise, why no live reporting as proposed by the Houthis even after a week of the announced incidents. Not even a high resolution photo at elevated view that shows the status of the air deck was released officially by the US military. Yes, sinking an aircraft carrier or damaging the landing deck and leaving it unusable with big holes is no easy task but damaging it is not.
Ffs.... imagine if you can recover a reaper and sell it. Maybe worth a couple thousand to hundreds of thousands to millions. Enough to pay for a house and retire.
