Moral lesson: people like violence, more than a straight, clean performance but as we know childish gambino there is obviously alot of meanings to this one
People went to a bar with entertainment because they enjoy violence more than entertainment? That's probably as fucking stupid as the actual message intended from the black actor turned "rapper" with the white wife and mixed kids that bitches about white people in the media.
Oh yes. There is so much meaning to derive from this. This means you’re just a little bit stupid. If you look at this as much more than a catchy tune, a cash grab and push for more fame, with a bit of aesthetically pleasing videography then 🤷♂️
Lord, this is amazing - the juxtaposition of lyrics to melody; the callback to not just Cab Calloway, but also the Nicholas Brothers and the way that ties in with what's being said; the commentary in the visuals aligning with the lyrics. Seriously, this is genius.
@@SaulBadmon That's the downside to streaming versus just downloading like back in the day. If they decide to change the songs or just wipe it off streaming, it's over for you lmao. I'm sure it's on YT though.
I haven't seen anyone else notice this, but there's an audience member at 3:49 who's smiling and enjoying the performance before everything goes to shit. He was so close to winning over the crowd with talent, but then he accidentally achieves it with violence. 3:49
i more so perceived it as people only started to enjoy it at all when he provoked someone. before this man smiles we watch gambino take another mans cigarette from him and blow smoke in his face. he started pushing someone around, and got a reaction. this is just furthered by not only provoking him, but just straight up killing him. even worse by his OWN hands. then everyone starts to love it. push someone until they die trying to pick up for themselves. beat down on someone and make them kill themselves unintentionally. he dodged all blame and got the fame
@@CINCEREDAGOD It’s not the same guy. If you compare the time stamps of 3:49 and 3:54 you can see the differences between the two guys better. Different hat and different clothes.
I took it as anticipation expecting the performers to get shot any minute because every move was slightly off beat and over the top enough to be tonally dissonant for the setting, like they're being popy in the wrong place so everyone is wondering who's gonna do it to em. The fact that the singer was the one to pop the guy is hilarious cause they were expecting goofy ahh homeboy with the minstrel act to get shot but subverted expectations and he just rolled with it. Whats interesting about before he roles with it is his posture. Even though it was an accident his posture is firm forward anxious expecting an altercation as opposed as what would be the expected timid anxious response. Form there even his moves are looser, like with that action the crowd can now allow themselves to be pulled into the show
what you mean is bring back creativity. bring back time and effort. only a few seems to want to do that. a music video used to be revelatory. glad to see some artists still feel that feel. #respect
Donal Glover is so smart and intentional with his work. Once, one of the black audience member got shot, everyone started to love his performance, and Gambino although shocked and disturbed. He capitalises on it and continues to perform without any regard to the DEAD PERSON in the crowd; boosting his popularity at the cost of a life and acting as social commentary for both musicians and society as a whole. Also, since, the music video was set in what looks to be the 1950's, accompanied by the contrasting modern lyrics and instrumentals; he's probably saying that we're still stuck in this brutal time-period and how we should be better and BIGGER like how people were shown when Young Nudy was featured. HES SO FUCKING COOL MAN Edit: Thank you for people correcting me, it does look like the 1930's (got my dates wrong lol)
The time period in the bar is more 1930’s/40's, but even the Nudy part is empty because really he's talking to no one. He's rapping about being in top of the world and not giving anyone shit but really he's alone and disconnected from the reality of the regular people in the bar, but is still focused on the people in there instead of going on & doing his own thing. And the woman is just a sexy body - posing faceless and silent, kinda referring to how hip-hop prefers women....
Nudy is shown as a lack of progress. Black men are killed just bc they rap. They have to commit crimes and go to jail for acceptance or get street cred. Once they get accepted they perform songs that reinforce racist stereotypes This was a commentary about the culture and it wasn’t praising it
I know the point of the video is to criticize the reception and treatment of black acts in the music industry, but damn if that isn't some smooth choreography. Love the juxtaposition of contemporary dancing with 50s dress and club performance
This video made me feel something. The sweat and horror in Childish eyes when the man was shot. The monumental Nudy + woman with afro. The tough crowd. The ambitious dancers. Every minute unfolded a new wemotion for me, bravo bino

I really love the dancing in this video. Like if I’m not mistaken there are decades of different iconic dance moves here and it’s really impressive to see the choreography
I feel like he's just blatantly calling out the rap community for glamorizing the ghetto, the struggle, being criminals, and trying to turn that into entertainment and an identity. "You could literally kill people but people will dance to it if the bars hit hard enough and if you aint bein violent, they dont care for it, they dont wanna talk about it"

For those of you who didn’t get it, They didn't care for his music til he started killing people and singing about it. Then they loved it. And weren’t embarrassed to listen to it. Bro cooked here.
Actually they started giving energy when he was moving like a Sambo in the 2nd verse, then they really came alive when the guy got shot. If you notice the man who started the uproar of joy was kind of reminiscent of Samuel L's character in Django Unchained - "Steven"
The more I think about this the more I’m convinced this video coming out now is a shot at hip hop culture following the Kendrick Drake beef. The combination of the setting (a reminder of uncomfortable black history) alongside an almost forcedly happy party tune (speaking on oppression which is ignored until there’s violence) and then finally a more modern hip hop verse literally sitting above it all (talking about culturally vacuous things) is so on point
I think it’s a coincidence of timing. It’s eternal that “black on black” violence destroys the culture. Lack of trust holds people back… Childish is a genius in his delivery of the message.
@@prestonharris2042 Thanks. We know Glover is an advocate for the black community and sees himself as a role model given his status. @destroythemindless “underrated: not rated or valued enough.” when you can take your butthurt down a notch and have an adult conversation feel free to respond to this and have an adult conversation. Between his music, acting, and creative “art” through music videos or shows like Atlanta, if you consider that kind of work art, there’s very few individuals like him. Yet what controls hip hop conversations on social media and mainstream media are one trick ponies (not a bad thing btw) like Yeat, Drake, Travis Scott, Megan The Stallion etc. If talent is actually appreciated, we’d be seeing his name a lot more. i more so perceived it as people only started to enjoy it at all when he provoked someone. before this man smiles we watch gambino take another mans cigarette from him and blow smoke in his face. he started pushing someone around, and got a reaction. this is just furthered by not only provoking him, but just straight up killing him. even worse by his OWN hands. then everyone starts to love it. push someone until they die trying to pick up for themselves. beat down on someone and make them kill themselves unintentionally. he dodged all blame and got the fame
