I feel like I’ve been listening to music for a thousand years. Every five or ten years everyone goes mad saying someone is an absolute genius who has managed by chance to put their finger on the zeitgeist of their moment. This guys finger is never on his moment, it spans a universality that has to mean something to everyone who listens and ought to compel them to be better or answer should they feel they can’t. Imagine if he had been painting chapel ceilings in the renaissance! They’d have hidden shapes of anatomical discoveries amongst subversive images that contradict the orthodoxy of the person that commissioned the painting. Genuine genius holds a mirror to us (the zeitgeist touchers) while also showing us a route from the past to a more reasonable future. That’s why there are so few geniuses as most gifted people can’t do both. I hate agreeing with people and I almost exclusively like punk music but people need to watch this person and listen to his words.

@destroythemindless “underrated: not rated or valued enough.” when you can take your butthurt down a notch and have an adult conversation feel free to respond to this and have an adult conversation. Between his music, acting, and creative “art” through music videos or shows like Atlanta, if you consider that kind of work art, there’s very few individuals like him. Yet what controls hip hop conversations on social media and mainstream media are one trick ponies (not a bad thing btw) like Yeat, Drake, Travis Scott, Megan The Stallion etc. If talent is actually appreciated, we’d be seeing his name a lot more. But I wouldn’t expect “you people” to be able to grasp that without “my people” holding your hand to walk you through it
THIS THA REASON KENDRICK & other niggas like him are high staples in hip hop . Takin tha life commercial , neighborhoods & communities like tha ones I grew up in are more cerebral & aware of them selves than they’re given credit . stories deserve to be told in light w more credibility than solely rap . rap is juss deemed tha most authentic .
I feel like he's just blatantly calling out the rap community for glamorizing the ghetto, the struggle, being criminals, and trying to turn that into entertainment and an identity. "You could literally kill people but people will dance to it if the bars hit hard enough and if you aint bein violent, they dont care for it, they dont wanna talk about it"
It's the look he gives after the guy gets shot and then he spots the first person laughing in the crowd. That's a level of physicality you don't see anymore.
He has such a talent as a comedic actor- and I don’t just mean bringing humor to a scene, but talent like you are talking about, really effectively communicating with that old school physical acting. Comedic acting relies so heavily on timing, nuance of movement and expression, and delivery.

what you mean is bring back creativity. bring back time and effort. only a few seems to want to do that. a music video used to be revelatory. glad to see some artists still feel that feel. #respect
Donal Glover is so smart and intentional with his work. Once, one of the black audience member got shot, everyone started to love his performance, and Gambino although shocked and disturbed. He capitalises on it and continues to perform without any regard to the DEAD PERSON in the crowd; boosting his popularity at the cost of a life and acting as social commentary for both musicians and society as a whole. Also, since, the music video was set in what looks to be the 1950's, accompanied by the contrasting modern lyrics and instrumentals; he's probably saying that we're still stuck in this brutal time-period and how we should be better and BIGGER like how people were shown when Young Nudy was featured. HES SO FUCKING COOL MAN Edit: Thank you for people correcting me, it does look like the 1930's (got my dates wrong lol)
The time period in the bar is more 1930’s/40's, but even the Nudy part is empty because really he's talking to no one. He's rapping about being in top of the world and not giving anyone shit but really he's alone and disconnected from the reality of the regular people in the bar, but is still focused on the people in there instead of going on & doing his own thing. And the woman is just a sexy body - posing faceless and silent, kinda referring to how hip-hop prefers women....
Nudy is shown as a lack of progress. Black men are killed just bc they rap. They have to commit crimes and go to jail for acceptance or get street cred. Once they get accepted they perform songs that reinforce racist stereotypes This was a commentary about the culture and it wasn’t praising it
another story where someone's art supernaturally protects them from gun violence. i love this message. the old man laughing while also wincing out a "no" is highly relatable.
@@MistaZiggy this is america, where the young students in their uniforms seem shielded from the violence around them as they dance. it is specifically dancing that saves people.
For those of you who didn’t get it, They didn't care for his music til he started killing people and singing about it. Then they loved it. And weren’t embarrassed to listen to it. Bro cooked here.
Actually they started giving energy when he was moving like a Sambo in the 2nd verse, then they really came alive when the guy got shot. If you notice the man who started the uproar of joy was kind of reminiscent of Samuel L's character in Django Unchained - "Steven"
I believe that everyone in hip-hop thinks your corny, but if you are truly about that life, willing to walk the walk, grab a pole, and catch a body. Suddenly you're real and your music is legendary.
I literally wrote a whole AP research paper on glover and murai representing Afro surrealism in Atlanta and he releases this AFTER I turn it in?? I’m about to take the class again or write another 5k word essay for fun because of how deep this man goes. I’m speechless
Y’all seem to not get why Nudy was added. His part is to show how both his and Glover are saying the same things, it’s just everyone brushes over Glover’s because it sounds happy.
Gambino's part was thought provoking and had layers to it, especially when you watch the video. I see it as a critique of the negative aspects of street culture. That is, if you're trapped in the poverty or ghetto cycle, don't glorify the streets and that life. Emancipate yourself, like Frederick Douglass (his auto-biography is a must read)...he liberated himself from slavery, he didn't continue to talk or act like slave. So when Nudy's part hits, for me, it's just like going right back into slave culture / chaos. One could say Nudy was purposely trying to parody how idiotic some rap lyrics can be...but after Gambino's part, I was expecting a positive lift-off, something to take us to higher ground. Unfortunately, the end really detracts from what otherwise is a great song with unique depth.
@wildbear2472 that's a good view on it. I can see what you mean but I feel like that was the point of it. That's the reality of the music industry these days so I think it was intentional. That's what I think anyways.
@@milkimadeit But if its not at Nudy's expense it falls totally flat. Unless he was purposely being a parody of rappers it defeated the entire message. Which like, idk, maybe Glover is enough of a prick to get a guy to feature just to crap on him. But I doubt it
@skeetsmcgrew3282 I don't think it's at Nudys expense really. They're both from Atlanta and judging from the comments a lot of people haven't heard Nudy. While I get the message from the video and song, I still listen to the kinda music this song is talking about and I'm still a huge fan of Young Nudy. Gambino is a lot bigger than Nudy and I would imagine Nudy isn't dumb and understands the point of the song. Hell, they were probably in the studio together. My point is, Nudys verse fits, it's also getting him more attention. Regardless of what the attention is from it's still publicity which is exactly what an artist needs to succeed.
The director knows these fresh-faced boys are going to be eaten alive by the consumer, no one anticipates that someone in the crowd *** spoiler *** but we aren't treated with shock and a demand for change. Instead we get denial, quick acceptance, and entertainment. Originally, the entertainer tried every tactic to find common ground with the crowd - but nothing worked quite as well as unexpected violence. I still think about the sweet woman in the beginning calling for a mop, she knew there would be blood but there was also money to be made. Great job Gambino and crew! Loved this!
I don’t think it’s about mental capacity. I think it’s more about how this song is trash as fuck. It ends there. I appreciate redbone all the time. There’s a difference.
This song is so genius and its going over so many peoples heads. He is singing a rap song over a catchy melody while performing tik tok dances. And nobody cares until some contreversy. Another social commentary like This is America Shout out to Donald Glover man, multi talent
Right! Notice the emotionless, pain-toiled faces. Conveying such a painful existence that even blk violence becomes insignificant, and then "comical laughter", the Inverse of deep-sorrow. I like how he captures the (energy produced by trauma) in the room to connect with the people; now through "shared" terror and grief he is accept. treating a grieving people thru entertainment.

The rkelly and isley brother videos!! ❤😂
Can't get over the pure talent that is Donny Glover. Unreal. Just oozes entertainment.
This man is under appreciated, that was a gem of a video…
HES SO FUCKING COOL MAN
Edit: Thank you for people correcting me, it does look like the 1930's (got my dates wrong lol)

I'm loving all the theories. This is a very erudite analysis of this piece of art ❤

@@TravlingNow YAAS! I love reading about people’s diverging understanding of things.
Y’all seem to not get why Nudy was added. His part is to show how both his and Glover are saying the same things, it’s just everyone brushes over Glover’s because it sounds happy.
it's kinda proving his point honestly
Loved this!
The old man laughing while saying "no nono no" is so relatable.
The emotion in these lyrics is palpable. It's like the singer is speaking my truth.
