I’d say in my opinion, the most misunderstood animals are most reptiles, any terrestrial arthropod, stingrays, piranhas, and sharks. Also, I’m very glad you mentioned lamprey. I’ve always thought they were really goofy looking and very interesting.
@@flatwavelength looking forward to it if it happens. I used to work at an aquarium fish store and I would sometimes stick my arm in the tank with piranhas to show people that there’s nothing to worry about with them. They actually incredibly skittish.
Here are my favorite misunderstood animals: Snakes: Thanks to portrayals like the Bible, myths (e.g. Medusa, the Hydra, Yamata no Orochi), urban legends (e.g. the infamous “python measuring up to its owner”), and various books, movies, and games, snakes are often seen as evil and/or demonic. However, if you leave snakes alone, they will NOT bother you. And only a few snakes are venomous. Some snakes can even make good pets if you do your research. And there ARE recent media that feature positive portrayals of snakes (Master Viper from Kung Fu Panda, Maddie from Back to the Outback, and even Mr. Snake from The Bad Guys (the movie shows that deep down, he has a good heart, he just doesn’t want to admit it). And the upcoming sequel to Zootopia (which will FINALLY introduce reptiles) will even feature a snake named Gary (which I think will be a good guy since the movie/franchise is about fighting against prejudices and stereotypes)). Sharks: Despite what Jaws and other movies and books might tell you, you are more likely to be killed by lightning strikes than being eaten by a shark (a sign at an aquarium I went to even said, “You are more likely to win an American Idol than be killed by a shark!”). Most sharks are even harmless to people, with only a few being legitimately dangerous. Piranhas: Despite what the media tells you, they will not strip you to bone in seconds (although Jeremy Wade once said that it IS possible for piranhas to kill and eat people, it’s just very rare if it ever happened). Piranhas will leave most animals alone unless they are weak, sick, or dying. Crows and ravens: Again, thanks to mythology and horror stories, corvids are often portrayed as eerie and evil scavengers. In reality, crows and ravens are just as intelligent as chimpanzees, dolphins, elephants, and parrots, and many crows and ravens kept in sanctuaries and zoos can even form bonds with trainers. Wolves: Despite what stories of werewolves and fairy tales tell you, it’s highly unlikely for a healthy wolf to attack and kill a human. And without wolves, we wouldn’t have dogs. Thankfully, modern depictions of wolves CAN be portrayed as sympathetic (look at The Jungle Book (both the book AND the Disney adaptations), and even Mr. Wolf from The Bad Guys end up reforming along with his friends). Hyenas: Even long before The Lion King (and to a lesser extent, Harley Quinn back when she was portrayed as a pure villain since she kept hyenas as pets), hyenas had bad reputations (many African and Middle Eastern traditional stories and folktales often portray them as dirty, disgusting, greedy, evil, and even perverted. Also, in African myths, evil witches ride and control hyenas). In reality, hyenas are actually important as both predators AND scavengers and they are very intelligent. Fortunately, in the spin-off to The Lion King called The Lion Guard, we are introduced to a GOOD hyena called Jasiri (and by the end of the series, many of the hyenas end up reforming), and Harley Quinn is nowadays portrayed as a more sympathetic villain/anti-hero with her positive qualities often showing (whenever she’s portrayed with pet hyenas in modern works, she is shown to love and care for them). Here’s hoping to see another good hyena in the upcoming Zootopia 2 as well. Spiders: Spiders aren’t always scary, and only a few spiders can actually kill you. Even the big tarantula is actually rather gentle and its bite is no worse than a bee’s sting (some spiders can even make good pets if you do the research). Remember: NEVER stick your hands in suspicious holes or cracks in rocks and trees, and if you DO see a deadly spider, NEVER play with it or try to kill it. I once studied in Australia and I saw a redback, and thanks to my knowledge, I know not to mess with it. The same also applies to their relatives, the scorpions (hell, back at my old high school, we had emperor scorpions as our class pets, and I was so attached to them that when we have to leave after graduation, I drew a scorpion to show that I will miss them). Crocodiles: Yes, crocodiles ARE man-eaters. Yes, they can be VERY dangerous. But they also have a positive side: Mommy crocs will care for their nests and babies. Also, crocodiles are actually very smart for reptiles (they know how to use twigs to lure in birds). And despite them being carnivores, crocodiles (as well as alligators) will sometimes eat fruit (although that would be the equivalent of us eating candy or cookies). Additionally, the Egyptians once worshipped a crocodile god called Sobek, who can be very ferocious, but also very generous. Pigs: Pigs are not really dirty, they roll around in the mud to keep cool and avoid sunburns and biting insects (elephants, rhinos, and hippos also do this). And pigs are one of the smartest animals in the world (smarter than some dogs and cats, in fact). Some pigs also make good pets (again, do your research). Also, “eating like a pig” is actually wrong: Pigs know when to stop eating, unlike other farm animals like cows and goats. When they are full, pigs simply take a nap or just mind their own business. Gorillas: Gorillas are not savage monsters that will beat you up, unlike portrayals in works like King Kong (1933) and Congo (both the book and the movie). Most of the time, gorillas are actually peaceful apes who will only be aggressive if they are threatened. Fortunately, recent portrayals of King Kong reimagine him as a heroic, reasonable, and protective guardian monster (the MonsterVerse comes to mind). And there ARE positive portrayals of gorillas in pop culture (Disney’s adaptation of Tarzan comes to mind, and recent games featuring Donkey Kong feature him as a hero and an undisputed champion in his jungle home with a love for bananas. Even The Super Mario Bros. Movie showed DK as fun-loving even when being serious in fighting, and he ended up making friends with Mario). Bats: Despite what vampire myths and various stories will tell you, vampire bats ONLY live in South America, and even they rarely bite people. Most other bats prefer insects, small animals, and fruit, and many people nowadays think fruit bats and flying foxes look cute when you look at their big eyes (there was even an episode of Bluey on fruit bats). Even the weird-looking ones CAN look both cute AND ugly at the same time (and ugly animals do have a weird charm to them). Vultures: Despite what we like to say about these ugly birds, they are actually VERY important as scavengers. Without vultures, we will be deep in dead animals that can give us nasty diseases like botulism and anthrax. And although vultures can look ugly and scary when perching, when you see them in flight, they look majestic (you will know what I mean when you see one flying in the wild or in an animal presentation at a zoo). Leeches: Leeches may be disgusting because they are literally blood-sucking parasites, but they have a positive side: They are used in surgery to suck blood in order to promote blood flow and avoid unwanted blood clots that can cause gangrene. A leech’s saliva contains anticoagulant that prevents blood from clotting. Black cats: Black cats are not unlucky or evil. Instead they are lucky, because their black fur prevents sunburns (unlike white or orange cats, or even hairless cats). Also, if you know how to take care of one, black cats will be just as affectionate as any other cat. Pit bulls: No, pit bulls are NOT ALWAYS aggressive. It depends on how they were treated and trained. If they are treated with love, then a pit bull can be just as affectionate as a golden retriever (small dogs like chihuahuas and Pomeranians can also be aggressive and prone to biting if they are mistreated or abused). I once worked as a volunteer at an animal shelter, and I made friends with a big and friendly pit bull. And I even get to meet lots of friendly and affectionate pit bulls at an expo. The same also apply to other stereotypically aggressive dogs like German shepherds, Rottweilers, and Dobermans (I once lived at a homestay in New Zealand, and my neighbor had a German shepherd who looked scary, but was very friendly (even though he was a bit naughty)).
I agree with you and love them also, specially rats, mice, pidgeons, sparrows, sharks, bats, craws, raccoons, ...and rabbits (they are persecuted in Finland if they manage in cities after being abandoned and even have babybunnies there💔).
As the resident autistic animal lover in 11th grade, I fell in love with my geosystems teacher’s snakes. I took over as their primary carer during the school day. I actually helped several of my classmates conquer their fear of snakes. I felt very proud.
I have a baby pigeon that a friend found fallen out of the nest at only a few weeks old, I ended up taking care of. She's bonded to me now, & a beautiful, peaceful, querky, curious creature. She's only been with me a week, but decided to have not one but 2 baths already, with towel & blowdry included, & is continually preening, so she is now in optimal top clean condition. Cleaning up after her so far is not too bad, I just use rags I put out for her to sit on, I put in the washing machine. I'd like to get some pigeon pants for her soon though.
I have two brown ringnecked pigeons and they are very sweet, I put a pond in their cage and they always wash theirself everyday! Very amazing and clean birds.
Honestly so true whenever my friends or my family see one of these animals they act like it’s some kind of disgusting creature and I think it’s rlly sad
Pigeons aren't protected by the Migratory Bird Act (they are non-native and an introduced species), and I don't see any specific Cali/LA laws or ordinances against it That said, it being legal isn't the same as it being ethical! They are social animals, so just grabbing one off the street could displace them from a partner/nested offspring. There are plenty of good places to home rescued and recovering Pigeons c:
You forgot to mention pigs, they are portrayed as dirty, but the truth is we kept them in dirty conditions. The only reason they roll in mud is to cool down. Aside from that they are clean animals, and they’re also intelligent, way more intelligent than some breeds of dogs.
Geese are absolutely in both camps of 'dirty' and 'feared'. I've had many friends tell me they didn't like geese either due to how much the poop up a park or how territorial they can be. In practice, though, they get an overdramatized rap; a lot of negative goose experiences occur because people don't interface with wildlife well and don't respect boundaries. Kids and pets especially push these boundaries and force geese to react. I think they are lovely birds!!
When I went to school still there so many geese there, year round even. The poop was very annoying so you had to watch your step but otherwise unless it was when they were nesting if you don't bother them they wouldn't bother you.
I had a dream where there was 4 and a half rats under my bed, but they didn’t really do anything they just climbed on me and I woke up. It was so cute.
I argue dolphins, chimpanzees, pandas, and koalas have became more recently misunderstood and hated for either not understanding human morality or “useless” to their ecosystem but that is far from the truth
Animals that are misunderstood are blobfish, rats, prairie dogs, spiders, pigs, sharks, bats, lizards, frogs, snakes, pufferfish, squids, scorpions, and skunks, I think nature is beautiful and unique and amazing

An animal I would like to see in a potential part 2 would be scorpions in general, which being one of the oldest groups of animals still around, suffer the same perception as spiders. 🦂
Lovely video, and it's so true that fear leads to misunderstanding. Crazy as this may seem, I have come to discover that rabbits are quite misunderstood as well. It is very difficult finding a place to rent if you have a rabbit. People think that they're born pregnant and that they destroy everything, which is entirely false.
