    Thanks for the memories. That took me back to Detroit in 1973. My dad bought me one just like yours for my 14th birthday. When you dropped the engine down on the tire to start it, I could virtually feel the handle in my hand at the same time. What fun I had on that little bike and what looks I got riding it!😮

      This is what I needed back in 1988 when I was 16 so I could ride it 4 miles to my after school job & back while I saved up money for a car.

    I bought one a few years ago for a hundred bucks. I did have it running but have fuel pump issues. Going to put it closer to the top of my to do list. 😉
    And probably too late now, but a little bit of "Seal All" would have likely fixed your gas leak, at least temporarily. 👍

    Man, I really wish I could find one of these near me. I have a few mopeds, but I would love one of these to take on some of the trails.

    You got a great deal ! In europe they go for a lot more money. Then again, they are still popular. Solex came out with an all electric version recently.

    Thanks for the entertainment. I've got a project yellow one that's about a decade newer, should be fun once i get around to it. Would be interesting if it's allowed on the bike paths, as electric bikes currently are and likely would be paying me up with all their upgrades.

    That's awesome I was just thinking about these old bikes they were quite popular here in New Zealand in the 1970's . I am considering trying to purchase one or similar. As the price of cars and fuel are getting ridiculous. Only need something to help me get to work 9 K/m's . As biking as I do really wears me out.

      Which model you got? I have a modified French S3800 model. It has racing gear installed. Still have the original block though and it runs. It was build in 1973. The weight cut with the all aluminum is at least 0.5 kg which is great. As long as you have a French or Dutch model I can help you for parts easily, I can get you all you need. The ones from the east block I cannot help you unfortunately. The ones from the USA and Mexico up too 80% - 90%.
      Tip(s):
      Get a 9 or 10 depending on your model,14 and 18 metric wrench plus a counter wrench for all (6 total). You will need them.
      Get Lock-tide and ensure that every bolt is fastened extremely secure with Lock-tide in it. If you do not do this it is only a question of time when it will fall apart because of vibrations. This is for your own safety.
      Do not re-chrome your parts, buy them new there are plenty and far cheaper.
      Powder coat or 2-component epoxy topcoat the rest of your framework as soon as possible.

    Wow, I've never seen one of these before. I I'm not a big fan of the friction drive because it will wear out your tire easily, but other than that, cool bike.

    • @Rustbelt_Research
      @Rustbelt_Research  10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The wheel is not worn out because the roller never slips against the tire. There is a friction clutch to prevent that.

    • @geraldscott4302
      @geraldscott4302 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have put thousands of miles on Solex tires. The front seems to last as long as the rear. Top speed is almost exactly 20 mph GPS. One issue with the friction drive is that it will not work if the tires are wet. You can't ride it in the rain, and avoid pedals. I'm not sure what it is called in my state. Motorized bicycles are limited to 48cc, and the Solex is 49cc. But it is not a moped either, because it does not have a VIN, so there is no way to register it as a moped. I have never been stopped on mine. But I don't ride recklessly like many motorized bicycle riders do, and the speed limit is 20 mph, which is top speed for a Solex. Many motorized bicycles can go much faster, and it is not uncommon for teenagers to modify them to reach speeds of 40+ mph. Those types are going to get motorized bicycles banned sooner or later.

      @@geraldscott4302 You can ride a Solex in the rain ! I owned one as only mean of transportation during 5 years in Vosges mountains in France, with more or less 150 days of rain a year, with no problem at all due to rain....

    Looks like plastic fuel tank, which did not appear until 1968. Applying brake doesn't kill the engine. It only throttles it back. I've got lots of miles on a 3800 just like this one. It is considered a moped in my state.

    150 dollars? Wow WTF. A good Solex over here running and all is at least 500 Euro because you need a license plate for it and bringing an old one up like yours without will cost you at least 250 Euro. That is without transportation cost as long as it has no license. I also have a racing cylinder with only 41 cc. It goes a lot faster has more traction but that noise. I still have the old block working and ready to go in case of breakdown of this one but I like my racing setup. It does 42 km/h on the racing set while it does 29 km/h on the original set. I do wear earplugs while on the racing set.
