The ability to turn into animals is such a cool concept. You could have the strength of a Bear, the flight of a falcon, the swimming ability of...well fish. You could have so many abilities!
Exitinct animals are easy for Gar, as they are natural and realistic. But Turning into a mythical creature is hard for him. Mostly because it's combining different animals together. However, during the New Teen titans storyline "The Brotherhood of Evil Returns", Gar takes center stage, especially near the end of the comic, when He attacks madame rouge in a rage, and she, a shapeshifter herself exclaims "Help! He's gone mad! He's turning into animals that don't even exist!"
I like the origin from Young Justice. He was severely wounded and Meegan gave him a blood transfusion. Since his mom was a vet and they lived and worked with animals he gained the ability to change into them.
