A really genuine guy. Met him st a bar at Dallas in the 80s. Took him at pinball on a bet; a true gentleman who bought the beer. Enormous hands. Beautiful soul. Thank you Todd for a lifetime of wonderful music.
What did they miss...? He is one of the biggest record producers ever. 4:20 His music was great...though usually to far out to make POP money. he had a couple good pop songs. the rest were to self indulgent, though always interesting on some level. The reason he isn't on the radio himself more is pretty obvious
@@morbidmanmusic "pretty obvious "? What. That people are addicted to crappy music, and record companies can make more money promoting trash? He had a lot more than a couple of good pop tunes. Sure, some of his albums were eclectic, and some were an acquired taste, but he released scores of songs, and dozens of albums that were phenomenal.
I'd say James J that Todd has been recognized by the world - though he's still not main mainstream . He is, supposedly reluctantly, now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
So, agree. After having been a fan for many decades, it's really nice to hear him talk to someone in the industry so that we can see the depth of his reasoning. Yeah, a genius for sure.
On my 21st birthday in 1975 I walked in to a dark house and Real Man started playing ... a surprise party ... made extras special by a song that only a real man like Todd could write. I love that era of his music, such musicianship and lyrics of a prophet preaching love of your fellow man. Peace be with you always Todd!
The first time you see Todd is almost always the best Tim. I first saw him in 1990 in Seattle. It was the Nearly Human Tour. He had a horn section, three rocking back-up singers, a percussionist ... you name it. Amazing show!
This guy is one of the true rock legends out there today from the glory days of when rock culture was really having a revolution and we need to value his presence more than ever as there are getting less and less of them around now.
This was a special interview for me. The blues band Todd mentioned was "Woody's Truck Stop", from Philadelphia, back in 1966. My friends and I used to go hear them play most Friday nights when Todd was playing guitar for them. He was always great. He's covered so much ground since then. His open, honest and thoughtful answers, and his humility impress me as much as his musicianship. He really is a special guy.
Mitch was slightly nervous too which was endearing. He knows how much Todd means to his fans and that we listen intently and watch every motion and expression. Todd was animated, what a delight to see him interviewed properly. I’ve been hanging for that.
I bought Nazz I as a newly issued disc and have been a serious Todd fan ever since (said one of millions of Todd fans for the millionth time!)! Thanks guys! Play on forever Todd!
❤ i would have loved to have asked some questions…what an amazing man and great to hear him just talk freely! thank todd for being the music of my life ❤
Healing ALWAYS heals me completely on every road trip. Todd is broad, kind, gifted and in love with the universe and all of us in it. So glad I got to see him at school in the 80's. Introduced to him by a bunch of drunks in an IHOP who all loved him and sang when one of his songs came on. "Todd," they said. So glad I listened. 🔥
Todd rundgren is a magnificent artist on many levels.i first heard of him in second grade and I still listen to his amazing 💙 ❤️💕 music." I saw the light" my personal favorite ..a true musician he is...
Very diverse and articulate. I just saw him in Des Moines. He's a funny guy! Doesn't take himself or others too seriously. Under-appreciated in my opinion. His music varies widely. A chameleon who is continually re-inventing himself. Big ups to the girl that broke his heart in H.S., heartache can be inspirational and Kudo's to Mitch for knowing WHO he is talking to.
I don't think he is a chameleon as he rarely changes his visual style...hes more of a musical explorer and he takes you on that journey...sometimes its excellent more often its good sometimes its a but crap
What an amazing humble musician / producer! I’ve loved everything he’s done especially in his solo career projects. Very inspiring in that he’s still doing what he loves! Todd Thanks for your awesome contribution to mankind! I see the light!
Great interview with Todd. I have followed him since 1973, saw him live in 1978, interviewed him via phone in 1996, and met him several years later. An amazing talent who is still going strong after 50 years. I hope he makes it into the Rock Hall this year. He deserves it!
I've just purchased his album 'Nearly Human' from a second hand record store in my hometown. I am impressed by the high quality songwriting and skill of the musicians.
This is one amazing interview. For starters: 3 cameras? Wow. And they're intercut, ok, fine -- but no edits! I mean, this interview is not edited -- and I am so grateful for that! -- but every time it cuts to another camera, I keep thinking, "Oh, THIS is where they must have edited something out," knowing all too well about that film trick. (When you need to cut to a different point in the interview, just cut to the artist's shoes or something and no one will know.) And, of course, I'm dead wrong, and immensely gratified and grateful.
I have loved you since A Wizard A True Star. I learned every word to every song. You were the 1st. Rock God . And in my opinion you still are. Your talents go far beyond playing a bass. You played EVERY Instrument. AND NEVER LEARNED TO READ MUSIC. what an ear . I loved you then and I love you now. And by the way. You are a stand up man. Raising Liv. God Bless You Todd. You are A TRUE STAR 🌹💝🌹After reading my post I started tearing up. You have that effect on me. Pure love for you Todd💝PURE LOVE 💝
Friggin' fantastic. Just brilliant. I recognized in this interview that Mitch has clearly become a significant marketing stop for artists. It used to be things like the Ed Sullivan Show and major radio stations, now it's these superb interviews with Mitch. Bravo! 👍
Todd made a difference in my life since a kid especially in 5th grade when a friend played onomatopoeia and it blew me away. This is 1976’ish. What his foundation is and stands for of bringing music into schools is awesome. What it did for me and inspired me in song and composition is a legacy in his name. I have always been enamored in his creativity and inspiration as well as his forethought of music. Utopia music is still engraved in my curriculum of daily phonic routines. Even as I listened to Pee Wee Herman background music in Pee Wee’s Playhouse, I knew it was Todd’s movement. I can’t but help attribute all things musical to what this man has done in my timeframe. The Tubes was better for having him involved. I saw The Tubes and Utopia in 1983 in Pittsburgh and it was amazing and still the best show I ever seen/heard. Thank you TR and don’t stop ever! The world is listening to you!
All music is digital today .... Good for iTunes, Spotify, etc., but I miss the full musical spectrum of analog, plus the prolonged enjoyment of LP sides 1 and 2; all the while reading liner notes and pondering album art. No artist/record company today puts forth the effort of storytelling that old 33 1/3 LP albums offered. Thank you Todd for still being relevant.
I agree with everything you said if you haven't already try the roon software for your PC or Mac it'll get you there a little bit more then just listening to files are streaming. Roon only really works if you have a digital library bunch of ripped CDs or Flac files something like that on your PC or external hard drive.
I have been a Todd fan since A Wizard a True Star. I know every word to. Every song. I was in love w/ Todd throughout my teens into my 20"s and 30"s. Todd is in a class of his own. Your Super Fan.
Good comment. Yes, the album used to have 2 sides and there was a particular art to crafting the running order. First songs and last songs per side had meaning by virtue of their placement, not unlike the structure of a story. The album was seen as a statement and the songs carried different weights. No one thinks about that anymore.

If you claim to be something, you do that thing. So perfectly stated by Todd. $$$s seem so secondary to the process. You work, you get paid. The joy comes in the process of being someone who does, that simple.
That interview was great Mitch. Thanks for doing it and posting it. I think eve die hard Rundgren fans may have learnt something new about him from that interview.

The man is incredible. The volume of music is astounding. I have personally tried to have at least one recording of his productions from Jericho to Hello People. Todd is truly a one of a kind; a kindred spirit
This was a terrific interview and it is great to hear such a musical genius just calmly think out loud about the trajectory of his career. I am always puzzled about why he almost denigrates his earlier works, especially dismissing them as "formulaic." Something / Anything was simply the masterpiece that allowed him to launch a brilliant and multi-faceted career. If there were ever a musician I would like to know & hang out with, it would be Todd. Thanks for all the joy you have given us!!
12 major chords, 12 minors. That is the size of the musical alphabet. You may add 7th's and 9th's but it's still those 24. This guy is wide and knowledgeable. And old. he's one of the artists who people will talk about long after he's gone. the thought that he might be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a YEAR AFTER Bon Jovi is really laughable and depressing.
Todd is one of my favorites since my teen years. When something anything came out and wizard a true genius, I did my best to where out the vinyl. I went a Todd concert in Austin, at Austin Opry House, with a super beautiful haircutter. One of the best nights in my life. Todd really gave a mind blowing performance and so did she. Oow ow ow baby, baby.
Todd is the best! He is nominated for the 2020 R&R Hall Of Fame and he deserves to be in there! You can vote for him daily until Jan.10/20. New this year, to cast a ballot in the official Klipsch Audio Fan Vote, you can search “Rock Hall Fan Vote” or the word “Vote” with any Nominee name on Google to cast your ballot.
Then there's the interviewer, Mitch Gallagher. His transitions to a different subject are awkward, his responses to Todd seem uncomfortable and forced -- and YET, he seems to know all about his subject, which makes up for any shortcomings. This is one crazy video and, in a way, thrilling.
Artists should only release half an album. Get the other half when you make it to a show. You can't have your favorite artist sign your iphone. Also, access to special live recording exclusively sold at shows.
A GREAT ARTIST MUST BE VERSATILE, ADAPTABLE,PATIENT ,AMBITIOUS,OPEN TO NEW IDEAS N TECH,ABLE TO SOCIALIZE RESPECTFULLY,AND WANT THE BEST AROUND THEM.THATS WHAT TODD HAS👨 TAUGHT ME.😵 LOOK, LISTEN,😱LEARN,😮 PRACTICE 🎸🎹TILL IT😫 HURTS,THEN APPLY IT ALL🎦 LIVE😎🎸🎶🎵🎼🎯
The US Government should be using Todd Rundgren as an artistic advisor ,such is the breadth of his experience , achievements and expertise ! Let alone his humungous intelligence . Where's the problem ?
I have a friend who wanted Columbia Records to hire him (Rundgren) to produce their first album at Columbia. They wouldn't do it and the record came out well, but I would have loved to have seen his ideas as I know he and Richard could have created some great sounds with Richard's Synthesphere.
What's crazy about this almost halfway through it almost 5 years later is that there are production plugins designed to reproduce low quality tape sounds and vinyl right down to the crackle and sub genres like LoFi Hip Hop. It's almost like a reaction to the fact that somewhere out there there's an intern in a recording studio who is spending hours removing breaths from vocal tracks.
A really genuine guy. Met him st a bar at Dallas in the 80s. Took him at pinball on a bet; a true gentleman who bought the beer. Enormous hands. Beautiful soul. Thank you Todd for a lifetime of wonderful music.
I like the way Todd Rundgren can explain and walk us through his process of thinking. I am in love with his music! Great interviewer!!!
Todd is one of a kind. The world has missed so much by not recognising his genius, talent, intelligence, and work ethic.

Todd belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Love the Something/Anything profile pic
Todd is and has been severely underrated. Many of his songs are every bit as good as Bacharach’s. Amazing musician.
Todd's "State Tour" was terrific !!! I saw Nazz @ "The Bank" in the French Quarter of New Orleans 1969.

Todd IS the Rock Hall.
Simon Clews: I grew up 20 miles northeast of Rock Hall. Todd is like an adopted son of Cleveland. They gave him the key to the city I think on 60th birthday.
For all of his undeniable contributions he is rather humble guy. He spent most of the Les Paul award speech talking about Les Paul.
The man is incredible. The volume of music is astounding. I have personally tried to have at least one recording of his productions from Jericho to Hello People. Todd is truly a one of a kind; a kindred spirit
Todd does belong in the Hall of Fame. No one deserves it more. No one

Tremendous interview. Interview style aside, Mitch's questions were point on and really brought out some truly frank responses from Todd. Great stuff.
😊👍
Thanks so much for this interview! Very thoughtful and well-researched questions, and letting Todd answer in full.
Thanks for watching! 😊
@@sweetwater Thanks to TH-cam's recommendation system for letting me know about this!
12 major chords, 12 minors. That is the size of the musical alphabet. You may add 7th's and 9th's but it's still those 24. This guy is wide and knowledgeable. And old. He has seen the business for years and years.

Because of S/A, I wanted to learn all the instruments and play the whole song. My 1st 4 track - 1984. My 1st 8 track - 2009. I have a Roland 16 track now.
But I love that TR is enjoying playing live!
---> Good interview
Barry Bedkey you also have Diminished and Augmented chords, Quintal/Quartal triads, time clusters, etc. and that’s just within 12tet. Todd definitely didn’t limit himself to 24 triads
The man never rested on his laurels ... To the benefit of the rest of us. When the history of social media is written he should get a mention for patronet.
i love todd. what did he do for social media? i'm curious.
Lovely honest guy
Todd always ahead of the curve !
Great interview. Mitch has a way of bringing out the right questions and Todd is just his usual self with his answers....
Had a blast at your John Curtain Show last night‼️
So wonderful to see you perform. Brilliant. Dreams are real❤️
Todd Rules!
🎵 Like Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Brian Wilson, Todd is an American treasure. 🎶
Todd’s music and talent are incredible, always pick up anything he’s done !
You are an amazingly talented gifted man!!❤❤❤
Mitch Gallagher, you have the best job in the whole world. But I think you know that. Big TR fan from waaaaaaaay back. Great interview.
👍
He is a genius.
Todd's glory-day output represents the greatest musical achievement ever. 'Genius' doesn't even begin to get it...
what period?
THE most sensitive and romantic singer-songwriter of all time!
Thank you.!!!
💝😊👍🏼🇺🇸
Great interview, Mitch. Really enjoyed it, and your questions are always different and bring out the best of the artist.
Coolest guy. Very diverse in his interest in music.
Todd Rundgren, a performance artist that is also a rock star!💫
Good interview. I learned so much!
Great interviewer. He listens.
My hero - favorite musical mind on Earth. Thanks so much for this...

he's one of the artists who people will talk about long after he's gone. the thought that he might be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame a YEAR AFTER Bon Jovi is really laughable and depressing.
This is what makes Todd Great

VOTE FOR TODD ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME 2019 ... please
Screw the Hall. What have they been waiting for? DOH!!
He said in another interview on TH-cam that he does not want and would not accept it.
Todd, say NO to the hall of shame
Genius, still innovating
You would have deaf and dumb not to realize the music genius of Todd Rundgren.
You will never see Todd Rundgren and Geoffrey Rush in the same room together.
Then there's the interviewer, Mitch Gallagher. His transitions to a different subject are awkward, his responses to Todd seem uncomfortable and forced -- and YET, he seems to know all about his subject, which makes up for any shortcomings. This is one crazy video and, in a way, thrilling.
❤️Todd
Really a genuine musical genius in every aspect of music and rhythm just incredible
Artists should only release half an album. Get the other half when you make it to a show. You can't have your favorite artist sign your iphone. Also, access to special live recording exclusively sold at shows.
that deprives people who just happen to live in the wrong location
Leroy boy this guy deserves to be in the Hokey Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before any Rappers like Run BLT got in!
nominate Todd 2019 RnR hall of fame. vote now!
@@marsdexter23 Never again. The RRHOF is a farce. Todd was on 3th place in 2018 and they did not want him there .
@@jacquelinediesel7883 I hear ya! HoF is a load of BS untouchables. Janet Jackson rock and roll??
I've read that he was incredibly cocky when he was younger..great to see him still around like an elder statesman..
Todd Is Freakin Amazing!
A man who makes a living off a plastic waffle.
Like 1 , nice vídeo 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Way forward (in the 90s!) Todd produced a SUPERB power pop record with Mr Mo Berg and The Pursuit of Happiness
I have a friend who wanted Columbia Records to hire him (Rundgren) to produce their first album at Columbia. They wouldn't do it and the record came out well, but I would have loved to have seen his ideas as I know he and Richard could have created some great sounds with Richard's Synthesphere.
Time out, play @ Daryl's House again.
Great job Mitch.
Thank you
He progressed, but still has room for more. Consistent lyricist and managed to keep his vocal.
FORGET MUSIC CLASSES. Just have UKULELE CLASS in all elementary schools!
I didn't know until recently that Todd is Liv Tyler's stepdad. Liv didn't know who her biological dad was until she was 8 years old.
Love of the Common Dad!
