After years of listening to Opeth, the album I always come back to is Watershed. The range on the album is insane, some strong heavy songs mixed in the soft prog rock with some of the best vocal harmonies I have ever heard. Purely amazing.
Don`t you ever think the progressive element in Opeth` music to be restricted to the mellow, folksy parts with clean vocals only ! "Progressive Death Metal" is a redundancy if there ever was one, considering that even at its purest and most uncompromising, death metal is in itself a rather complex and intricate, and therefore *progressive* style of music, notwithstanding the fact that it bears little to no surface similarity to the classical prog-rock of the 1970s.
its such a fucking great song. I sort of like that its slightly less known, it feels more secret, like a hidden masterpiece or some lost piece of art. Having said that, however, I do think more recognition/rating would still be great- as it's what it really deserves!
One opinion, for me the change of drummer on this album took some out of the band, Martin Lopez´s unique style was the perfect fit for Opeth during their heavier times, Ax being a more traditional drummer, not so much. Little things and details mainly musicians can spot, the general public not that much....
I wonder the same. This album is majestic, and the production is crystal clear. You can hear every piece of the instruments and melodies, it's amazing. For me is one of the best Opeth's album. @@M.S-Music yes, the fact that Martin Lopez was struggling with his (mental?) health forced Opeth to make the decision, and IMO the decision was correct, Martin Axenrot is incredible behind the drums, he is very technical and as you said, being more a "traditional drummer" is what Opeth was looking for so far, you can hear that with their last albums which are more "prog-rock" than metal and Axenrot executed the task successfully. I'm not stating that Martin Lopez wasn't good, totally the opposite, he is an AMAZING drummer but his health was not on point at that time.
I love his drumming on the later albums. He's an amazing jazz drummer mixed with an amazing metal drummer. I actually find the blast-beats on Heir Apparent juvenile (not because of his execution but because why the hell even do that). On the rest he sounds great.
Started listening to Opeth in 2005 in highschool. This album though is one of the tops. Love Damnation, Ghost Reveries. This one though brought a tear to my eyes and gave me such enlightenment. So good. Thank you Opeth :)

I wanted to answer "Mine is Hessian Peel", since I just started listening and automatically assumed that you referred to Coil. Then I read again.. Nice! I never saw anybody refer to Hessian Peel, but it's so great! Brilliant Parts, transitions and I think it's composed with a doctrine classique structure, which I didn't see anywhere else yet.
I think that this is my favourite Opeth album (so far). I have a lot of nostalgic love for Ghost Reveries, but there is something about the weird medley of menacing death metal, folky acoustics and janky prog rock in this album that is just sublime.
Been listening to Opeth as a new listener to get familiar with them prior to the upcoming show with Mastodon. Blackwater Park was beginning to grow on me but it hadn’t really grabbed me other than the incredible talent that went into it. Saw a mention of this album and decided to give it a try. In the second listen and just got hit with that “whoa…wait….OMG” as it hit me. The way the music flows consumes you as it you breathe it in. Edit: and here we are today, 3 months later and I now own every Opeth album and am completely down the rabbit hole. Whether it’s just listening to the raw energy of the music - whether haunting, gently wandering, or brutal - or keying in to Akerfeldt’s guitar style, there is just so much to absorb. One thing that relieved me was an interview where he said he prefers writing to touring. Bring it on sir, keep writing! Also, Storm Corrosion with Stephen Wilson is worth a listen if you haven’t already heard it!
And have been listening for the exact same reason haha, the album that’s really resonated with me so far is actually Ghost Reveries but I’ve been branching out these last few days.
I've been an Opeth fan since about 2006.. After 3 failed attempts to see them due to my own gig schedule and the last time, Mike was sick and cancelled last minute, I finally made it to the Albany show Nov. 19th. Amazing. I'm finding that my favorite albums from them keep rotating. This is currently it for me. This band has just about everything I need in a band. It'sfun to see that stil today, newer listeners are having the same "OMG" moment that I had, and still have.
What did you think? I saw them with Mastodon (one of my faves) in Albany. I wad blown away by the musicianship, especially the clean guitar tone from the PRS.
@@ryanmustain6545 I thought both Mastadon and Opeth did excellent!! I’m not a giant Mastadon fan personally but they put on a hell of a show and sounded really good. I personally thought that Opeth was the best even if they didn’t have the flashy show that Mastadon did, and as always Mikael was hilarious between songs which was a huge plus. All in all it was a great show, albeit a LONG one😂
Axenrot is incredibly underrated. Every bit as good as Lopez, just different. This lineup could have made plenty of OG Opeth style masterpieces just like this one.
It's really unfortunate that he had to follow Lopez. He was easily, and I mean EASILY just as good, if not better in a purely technical sense, but any replacement to an iconic member will always be underrated.

I can truly say that I love every Opeth album damn near equaly , able to listen to each in its own space and right, but goddamn if this isn't the one that manages to epitomize all that makes Opeth what Opeth is into one glorious example. If someone asks me what Opeth are all about, I'll tell them "listen to Watershed".

My favorite Opeth album will forever be Ghost Reveries, and Blackwater Park is one of the best metal albums ever writen... but man Watershed is such an accomplishment in Mikael's career. For me, this album is his peak in songwriting and guitar dexterity. The amount of nice riffs and passages are just perfect. And the growling parts may be scarce, but every time theres growls is such a delight. I picture him writing Heir Apparent like "well I had enough with death metal so here's some of the most brutal content I can come up with so enjoy". And he nailed the fk out of that. Huge huge accomplishment this album is.

I was listening to Mykur; I greatly enjoy Mykur... My finger or thumb accidentally bumped something... I got annoyed for a min... Until I realized it went to this album & right at the beginning of the song "Burden" .... Wow... One of my faves and really hitting me right now✨🖤💚🖤✨ Beautiful Serendipity.
The Lotus Eater is such a haunted progressive track, oh man I am in love. Burden is such a beautiful and sad song. I can comfortably drown in it and never wake up.
Despite its stylistic diversity, Opeth was above all a composer of expressionist aesthetics, always close to drama, depth, anguish and the deep and tormented vision of life that seems to emanate from the metaphysics of man as of his very deep nature! Words of a Nerd¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When this album came out, I’d dropped out of college and was contemplating ending it all. That was 20 years ago and I still like listening to this to remind me to never give up ❤
The thing I love most about this album is the amazing use of dynamics from having really heavy moments into super quiet melodic moments where you could hear a pin drop. So good!
Wow Deralict Herds is awesome, Never heard it on my watershed album. I have it on CD, and this last track is definetly not on it. Sounds really badass though. Cant believe I'm hearing An Opeth song I never listened to before, after decades of being a huge fan of the band. Thought I heard it all.
This album is criminally underrated, but it's so hard to pick a best Opeth album. On any given day, I could choose Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance/Damnation or Watershed. I could listen to Hex Omega forever...
The big difference is: Lead guitar solos of the new guitarist. Listen to older albums. All solos were at the same pace... This makes the difference between good soloing and average..

i really didnt think they could create a better album than still life. then came blackwater park which blew me away. then 7 yrs later they completed their hat trick with watershed of among the greatest masterpieces ever produced. first of all their albums starting with orchid and leading up to this one are fucking masterpieces but then came heritage., who'd a thought? just saying.

This album is criminally underrated, but it's so hard to pick a best Opeth album. On any given day, I could choose Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance/Damnation or Watershed. I could listen to Hex Omega forever...
Still life is a pure masterpiece !!
The big difference is:
Lead guitar solos of the new guitarist.
Listen to older albums. All solos were at the same pace...
This makes the difference between good soloing and average..

Everything before watershed = guitar solos in same pace
Everything with Fredrik Akesson = top solos.
That is why I will always choose watershed over blackwater park, ghost reveries and deliverance
Do not like the albums before blackwater park in particular
Some top songs on heritage, pale communion and sorceress.. because of the soloing.. but don't like the increasingly softer direction 😒

i really didnt think they could create a better album than still life. then came blackwater park which blew me away. then 7 yrs later they completed their hat trick with watershed of among the greatest masterpieces ever produced. first of all their albums starting with orchid and leading up to this one are fucking masterpieces but then came heritage., who'd a thought? just saying.

Of course I know that back then nothing indicated this band would exist and of course there are tons of other bands from the 90s and before that I love and admire very much.
