I have 3 retro gbc, gba sp and psp consoles myself, I try to use each of them (usually gbc). I do not know what it is possible to keep the consoles on the shelves ... Maybe it increases ego. On the other hand, someone collects stamps, someone else collects cars, another consoles. I am of the opinion that when I have something, I want to use it, not to keep it in a regiment. :) Film by. me 1st class after all.
You should look into the Gameboy Macro mod, to me it's the most aesthetically pleasing gameboy systems. It's pretty much a broken DS lite where the broken top half is removed and either a custom shell is made for the front bottom part or acrylic rods are inserted in the now empty hinges.

You should get polywatch. It's an abrasive paste to help buff out scratches on plastics. Usually intended for watch crystals, but it's good stuff.
