  • Spes (Hope) composed by Mia Makaroff for unaccompanied SSAA choirs.

Spes is a joyous unaccompanied work for more advanced treble choirs. The composer has combined two texts about hope - one in Sami (a language from northern Scandinavia) and the other in Latin from Ecclesiastes - to create a work that uplifts. Challenging but incredibly fun, this would make a great concert opener or program center and would be perfect for honor choirs and festivals.
    Spes (Hope)
    Who is like the wise?
Who knows the explanation of things?
    I belong to the wind,
    but I live,
maybe that is the meaning of life.
    I live here and now…
    I won’t be alive tomorrow.
That is the way - and so what.
    As no one has power
over the wind to contain it,
    so no one has power
over the time of their death.
A person’s wisdom brightens their face
    and changes its hard appearance.

The Altos 2 nailed the low D3 that was very good in their register almost Tenor-like. And I am a high Tenor 1.
