Omg a 101 dalmation item ánd babytoys?? That is an amazing milestone!! Regarding your flipflops, I feel you, I tried to keep a pair of italian booties alive for as many years as I could trying to revive them every year at the shoemakers.. but the holes came in... i wore them almost everyday for years. Miss them still dearly but at least its nice to know I got all the wears out of them I could. 🙃 It's so double but stuff is to be enjoyed!

At my church we collect for Operation Christmas Child all year long. The gals hit up the sales and bring to church as we go. We sort into bins by categories and age. These bins are stored in our parsonage garage on metal shelves. Then we have a church packing party in November. It's fun. We play Christmas music, wear our Christmas sweaters and when we are done we order pizza. We even bake some allergen free ones for our gluten-free, dairy-free folks. We are a regional drop-off so we don't have to take our boxes far. If anyone wants to pack a box ahead of time we store it too. No clutter at our own houses anymore! Alot of your extra school supplies and craft items could be donated or made into sewing kits and craft kits for the older kids' boxes for OCC. Just an idea. There may be a church in your area that would love to take them off your hands.

When I heard you tell how you assigned value to yourself through social status objects, I felt very impressed. This is not an easy thing to let go of. I took marketing classes in university, and that phenomenon is called "social value" and is deliberately used to bring people to buy items. It's one of the methods used to create a market. This culture is so omnipresent, that few people will have in their lifetime the ability to question it, let alone let go of it.
I'm feeling very proud of how hard you've worked on yourself. And you deserve to be proud too.

@@JMA864 Oh, would you accept to tell me more? I'm always curious to learn about how people live these things from the inside.
I myself have mostly been against the current during my formative years, as were my past and current friends, and thus I have often struggled to understand those who abode by the norms. Especially since I have been bullied by such people, and it was easier at the time with my limited knowledge to just lump up all of those who seemed similar and reject them, as a protection mechanism.
Now in my mid-30s, with education, experience and therapy, I have more nuance and empathy for those who were on "that side" while growing up, and am eager to continue learning. There seems to be a distinct type of suffering that can arise when your reaction to adversity is to try harder to respond to society's expectations, rather than reject them.

@@ApDiEr Oh, too long a story to tell here but yes conforming when it’s not in your nature can be damaging too. In HS I was an outsider and part of a happy band of weirdos, until I decided to get in with the cooler kids, at least some of whom were headed to college, which is where I was definitely going. Mostly succeeded but *big mistake.* Many decades (and much therapy) later, I’m close to reclaiming my weirdness! 🤪

@@JMA864 Aw, thanks a lot for the response! I'm really glad you got the help you needed and that you're feeling more connected to yourself as a result. If there's one thing in life that's within our control, that's where it lies I'd say. You did your best when you were young, youth is real hard and we often simply did not have the tools to handle it. I'm glad that getting psychological care is becoming more normal. I have 2 spaces that I have been avoiding facing in our home and it has prevented us from finishing our renovations for over a year. I have also been busy in this time working long hours, but if I had put aside 15-30 mins a week, it would have been dealt with long ago. Unfortunately I’m struggling to see past the WHOLE space and divide it into sections. I do KNOW how to declutter and let go of stuff - I used to be super organized. After a number of life events that have heavily impacted my physical and mental health, I find it so much harder to face letting go of stuff, so I procrastinate. It all weighs heavily on my mind though.

The BEST advice I ever heard about decluttering reminds me of the contents of the Coach box. Sometimes we just aren’t READY to part with things and that’s OK. Go ahead and box it up and keep, but revisit the contents every year or two. There WILL come a time when you ARE able to part with those things…it just might not be today. Perfect examples of this are my kids’ baby clothes, toys, things I was attached to as a mom. I make a point of dwindling my collection down and one day it will contain only what I love the most. Decluttering is extremely emotional to some and it has to be done gently and with compassion.

Idk about where you live, but I found my city has those drop off bins for donations of clothes as well as textile recycling. I put old socks and scraps of fabrics in there.
For operation christmas, I would put an 'event' reminder on my Google calendar and a few days before on my physical planner. In the notes of the event I'd put reminders like 'check laundry room bottom shelf' and 'schedule next year's event' so you know where it's at & can forget until then. Then assess next year's system. May not apply now, but I try to do that more for seasonal or recurring things that I know I'll forget (like home maintenance & flushing the water heater).
Hope this helps but love all the work you do!

So unless it’s something that is reasonably still in fashion and wearable it’s in the bin Was talking to the guy at the charity shop today. He said if people drop off and say it’s good stuff it’s probably rubbish. If they don’t comment it’s usually decent quality.

Holy cow! You have truly come so far!! So proud of you!! 👏👏👏👏
Honest confession!! A while back I was getting frustrated with you. (My problem, not yours!!) But I realized you and I are very much alike!! I just wanted you to get it done. YEARS ago, I went through my whole house. My goal was to make to have so much stuff I had to move 10 things to get to the one I wanted. I accomplished it. So proud. I even conquered bringing new, so possession level remained constant. I have de littered here and there. As the mood struck. It should have struck more
Fast forward to last September when I had my first bout of encephalitis!! What? At 73!! Bounced back greatly. Until January 12. It was BACK. Crud! During the first bout they discovered a mass in my cerebelum! Affected my speech and equilibrium. But again it all came back. It was decided to keep an eye on it as it was in such a touchy spot. I was fine with that. After all they were the best of the drs. Surgery was scheduled for July 11. A month prior the mri showed it the size of a small pee. Might of grown from the previous month, but it was decided it need to come out. July 11 finally arrived. They did a final mri the day of. It had grown to the size of a blueberry!! It was time for it to leave. Wasn’t invited in the first place.
6 hr surgery only took 3!! Came out cleanly. Tested out as slowest growing, non malignant tumor. No spinal involvement, as this mass liked to go down the spine. They will monitor for a couple years, it it is all good now. And I’m not anticipating anything different.
Why Ami telling you this. Because I’ve been told in October sometime I will be fully recovered. I’m claiming it I will be able to drive again. Not reliant on others!! Yippee!
But I’m really restricted on what I and what I can’t do!! Can’t bend over……..Ugh. All this to say of course NOW I WANT TO RECLAIM MY HOUSE. lol. We want what we can’t have! I’m convinced!!
Have a feeling when I’m released I am going to the walls in my house. Do not want to leave a mess for my kids when I’m gone.
Thx for listening. Have a great evening,

for your childhood toys you could put them on a themed xmas tree so you could enjoy them instead of in a tote until you get a bookcase set up etc.
not just a hoarder thing... adulting... "this is a good box, imma gonna keep it" lol.
pens and markers when I go through them ... I check before tossing... donate if they are ok but unwanted...some schools take markers etc to recycle them.. I think its through crayola but they take any brand.
xmas child bag I'd stick it by the door( maybe a note in the phone to where you put it) or on top of xmas stuff. if donating a food bank or maybe at school would appreciate a small donation.
some thrift stores take ragged off clothing... I let them know when I drop them off. last time I did that value village took them. normally I shred them for cleaning rags when they are too far gone to wear if they are the right materials. If I get too many cleaning cloths I give them to family.
    looking great :)

You did awesome on this - these are things you haven't touched in a long time and you rightfully understood that they were mostly nothing that adds to your life. I'm so inspired by the percentage of these things you let go of!

I was with other objects like you with the packet peanuts: "If I keep them, I won't have to buy them". After years I changed my habits to: "If I can buy them, I won't have to keep them."

Great work! 😀 Sometimes you just need to let things go as you said. I did the same for my storage in the basement. Gave a lot a away and thew things away. It felt so good and now I can go in and find things ;)

Label a tote for OCC and keep it at the front of the Christmas cave. Then you'll always have a place to put away newly purchased items and a place to always find them when its time. Maybe add a bow or decal, something ro make it stand out from the other totes so its REALLY easy to find
