We should all be able to agree that indi titles like Vampire Survivors which sort of spawned a genre of its own, show that big budgets arent required for big success. I personally find that a lot of the indi games I enjoy seem to be free of modern politics and agendas which is a breath of fresh air atm. It's nice to just let a game be a game once in a while.
i often hear people trash talk the state of gaming these days, but they seem to only focus on "safe" big budget AAA titles, because the indie scene has been amazing over the last 10-15 years. some of my favorites have been indie titles. i'm stoked at where gaming is now.
On other platforms maybe, but the Switch is struggling when in comes to big budget cinematic AAA titles. There is an imbalance there. But sometimes, something A tier is ported over brilliantly, like Ace Combat 7. But its pretty rare, while "pixelart" indie games, without any real storylines, are a dime a dozen at this point.
@@Bajso84 not every indie game is a cheap, soulless pixelated shovelware game. supergiant games, for example, only has 25 employees and every game they've made has tons of style, a pretty beefy amount of customization in character builds, gorgeous hand-drawn graphics, and kick ass soundtracks. while yeah, there are plenty of trash shovelware games on switch, there are also plenty of fantastic indies.
Mark raving about Nine Sols everytime he gets the chance is bringing a smile to my face, it just shows how these Indie Devs are genuinely passionate about their projects. They really deserve all the love and recognition! Keep up the work and don't stop mentioning these Indie titles.
Indies have been putting AAA to shame for a while now. There has been so many good games proving that. Crow Country, Another Crab’s Treasure, Switch Up is brilliant at showcasing these games!
This is why this channel is awesome. You both look at indie games all the time on the Switch. The number of times I wonder what a particular game will be like on Switch, you guys always have a video on it. Honestly, you are mind readers!
One of my favorite videos of the series. These past few years i have truly fell in love with indie games, i barely play AAA games now. Nine sols is one on this list that im very interested in trying, i just need to clear my metroidvania backlog a little bit first hehe
I'll mention two games that you guys recommended in one of your videos: Imagine Earth (now 40% off by the way) is an amazing strategy/management game. Also very recently "Wildermyth", I couldn't agree more with your review, Mark, is just awesome.
Great thing about a lot of these indie games is the awesome prices you can get them for in the sales! I love Nintendo AAA but we all know that apart from the occasional 33% off we’re still paying full price for games as old (or even older ) than the switch itself.
Nine Sols is at the top of my "when I allow myself to buy something cause I conquered a game in my backlog" list and I cannot wait 🙌🏻 Lovely vid to watch in the evening as always guys!
Bloom town looks really nice, not on my radar at all. I think Chained echoes deserves another shout out. Solo developer with a goal of creating a game that feels the way you remember games from your youth. It was a breath of fresh air and an incredible individual effort.
Witchspring R is addicting! Highly recommend it as it is such a charming RPG. You can really train and become extremely powerful in the first few chapters if you wanted to grind stats.
Oh, the weather outside is frightful, Gaming on the Switch is delightful, And since we've no place to go, Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo, My backlist show no signs of stopping, I've brought Xenoblade, its jaw dropping, The lights are turned way down low, Nintendo, Nintendo, Nintendo. Merry Christmas to one and all.
I think these Indie games really do itch more of that nostalgia feeling then the AAA games do. If your older these games definitely take you back to your childhood memories of games you played.
I've had Little Kitty, Big City and Nine Sols on my "Need to Buy" games! I guess I don't play a lot of Triple A games and gravitate towards indie games. The game I was looking the most forward to this year was Eiyuden Chronicles - and I know it did (maybe still doesn't) have the best performance but I'm such a big fan of Suikoden I and II, that I had to pick up this spiritual successor!
Thank you to the legend from Untold Tales to sponsor the whole series. And of course thank you to Mark and Glen. Thank you for another year with this channel. This has been my comfort food for quiet a while now. Many years to come hopefully ❤
Another Crab’s Treasure is one of the most memorable games I’ve played this year. And giving the option to just use a gun and oneshot everything if you don’t feel like dealing with mechanics was just brilliant!
I haven't played ANY of these games (yet) so thanks for adding them to my wishlist... I reckon Nine Sols would be my first pick (But that might just be the Danny John Jules reference!)
Two of the games that are on my younger siblings’s list for what games she wants to get are Nine Sols, and Little Kitty Big City, she just loves how both of them look.
Hey SwitchUp guys! Just felt like I should tell you, the audio is uneven. I am deaf in my left ear, and I was wondering why I couldn't hear the right. Then I reversed the headphones around, so that slightly fixed it. Still thought you should know there's an audio issue, though!
Im so happy that switch 2 will be backwards compatible, i can store all these on my wishlist and play them next year. Just picked up the wargroove games which look awesome
Nine Sols presents the idea of Dao pretty well. Many will not agree with it but many will also find it reasonable, even if it is kind of cruel. It also has more soul than there are A's in multimillion dollar games
I love that indie developers take more chances on storyline, game mechanics, and art style. They’re not all home runs, but there are loads of great indie titles out there. I think the graphics limitations of the Switch level the playing field for indie developers because games need good content and game play, not just amazing graphics. Cocoon was the best indie game I played this year. An innovative concept done very, very well. And super simple controls. Didn’t need to learn 8 buttons and have laser precision timing. Simple yet captivating gameplay.
As a 90s kid, see the PS1 art style used in a lot of indies to great effect, brings me a great hit of nostalgia. Goes to show you don't need 4k Ray tracing to make a hit!
The switch is the reason i have expanded my catalog to consist of a wide variety of games. It has made me really appreciate the smaller scale indie games. Before i was a big AAA guy but now i dont really bother with them anymore. Between having kids and the price of AAA games indie games have changed my life hahah.
I think the Cat Quest games are awesome for what they cost and each one gets better. I like Zelda style games but can play these with my daughter shes only 3 but is getting to grips with the controls now
I LOVE indie games. There are so many games I've wanted to try for years but couldn't because I don't PC game and really only play Nintendo consoles with a sprinkling of whatever PlayStation model my husband has, so when the switch came out it was like a godsend. I've never bought more games on a console and 80% are indie games. Such a delight.
When i'm thinking about the best A titled games then The Plucky Squire and Nine Sols coming to my mind defienitily I love a metroidvania platformer game's Nine Sols art style and gameplay I need to get and play Nine Sols someday! 😊❤
Really glad to see Nine Sols getting a shoutout!! Red Candle Games went through the ringer with their last game because of Dumb Political BS that almost derailed them completely, so it's so sick that they pulled something like Nine Sols out in spite of it 😁
My last console before a switch was the GameCube, so it's a real novelty for me to be able to play these type of games that would never have gotten a disc release back in the day.
I know these aren’t from 2024 but Spiritfarer ‘s story has stayed with me, Return of Obra Dinn is a great concept with unique features that is executed perfectly, Dredge has a great gameplay loop and The Excavation of Hobbs Barrow hit that point n click itch I had (until Broken Sword Reforged came out)
Not sure how small the studio is but I really enjoyed Golf Story in switch. Love the art style, the settings, the controls. One of my favorite games on Switch.
Most of this year for me was cleaning out my backlog or playing splatoon3 and ff14. So I didn't really play many new games this year. That said there is one specific one I should point out. It's sadly not on the switch but I still think I should point it out Rabbit & Steel, it's a sort of bullet hell game with some inspiration from MMO's like ff14 with how your attacks work and how the enemies attack. Raid mechanics so to speak. You don't see that many when playing alone but when you play it with even one other person, spread and stack mechanics be abound. It's also has a nice art style, and music. Emerald lake being super catchy.
I agree with this list! My favorites are Another Crab's Treasure (wonderful game mechanics), Nine Sols, Little Kitty Big City. I haven't tried WitchSpringR, but the game looks fantastic. Thanks for putting this list together!
Honestly, 90% of the games I play on my switch these days are indies. Even with first party Nintendo, I prefer the small budget experimental games generally, Emio had the perfect balance of indie uniqueness with that big budget polish. Hope we see more games bridging that gap in the next few years, especially with Switch 2!
I gotta say, you guys keeping the game title in the top corner while talking about it is top-notch. It's such a small detail, but I hate when videos let the title fade away, and you have to rewind to find it. Downloaded The Plucky Squire after watching. Love the content, keep it coming!
I used to be mad at you guys for making my backlog grow so much. But honestly whatever game you recommended I ended up being happy with so now I just enjoy the ride.
So many of these games are on my wishlist! There are so many good games on the switch. One that doesn’t get much mention is She Wants Me Dead - it’s often on sale for 89p and is so much fun.

The indie I've enjoyed most this year has been Wargroove. A bit old, I know. This year, Dream Tactics captured my eyes. I'll have to give it a go soon.
I enjoyed listening to you guys just chat about games for half an hour, you should do more long videos like this in the future if you have the time and inclination. I forgot about WitchSpring R, and how pretty the graphics are. It’s still a bit too expensive for me right now, but hopefully someday. Little Kitty Big City looks so fun too!
Hadn't heard of Another Crab's Treasure, but I'm intrigued. Spiritfarer is my favorite Indie. I get burned out on games quickly but I finished that one and was sad when it was over.
I made the mistake of running my mouth about managing to not add to my backlog yesterday and then a game you shared a while back went on sale for under $4. My backlog just got bigger.
Conscript is one of the best games you lads have put us on to this year. Its amazing....harrowing....but amazing. Honorable mention for Animal Well. Hands down my game of the year
Don’t know where I was when Drova was released and talked about. Another to add to my backlog list and we are only four days into this series. Here’s hoping for some good January sales.
Great coverage as always guys. You mention during the Plucky Squire segment that not many big studios take risks with changing up the format of their IPs other than Nintendo which I agree with but got me thinking, what other big IPs could change their format up? Many of the well known franchises have IPs that are locked to a gamestyle (Elder Scrolls, GTA, GoW, etc). Intrigued to know your thoughts on for what IPs could have a “switch up” and therefore it could make such significant changes? Cheers now.
I picked up Drova after your reviews and am captivated. I just added a few more to my wishlist. Thanks for giving us a look at these lesser-known games.
Indie devs are the unsung heroes of gaming. Sure once in a while you get a Team Cherry, but more often than not, you get devs that release some true gems and go unrecognized, for one reason or another (many times because the e-shop does not promote them), only to get ripped by the next big company...
I dunno if it puts aaa to shame, but mouth washing is a horror game I played recently that left a deep impression on me that I'll be thinking about for years. Bit sure a aaa studio would have bank rolled it because of the subjects it deals with
Glad to see Little Kitty, Big City get some love. I don't think people gave it a fair shake when it came out because they were expecting Stray with a different art style instead of what it is and what the developers advertised it as: Open World Untitled Goose game as a Cat. Smh.
Picked up Nine Sols after watching your review a couple some time ago. I love that parey mechanic. The visuals remind of another game, Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, which is also a fantastic game.
Animal Well. When I first saw the trailer I didn’t like the art style but after seeing so many positive reviews I gave it a go. It’s a great game and importantly… just 5 more minutes turns into an hour later. It will be interesting to see what there next game is.
Always good to see someone praising the indie games so many amazing, quality games, I bought drova recently after hearing what you thought about it, what an amazing games as always you cover all switch and that is yet another plus in switch ups favour...
Loved Crab Souls this year and Bloomtown is at the top of my wishlist for games I didn’t get to yet this year! That plus Cat Quest III are eyeing my wallet for a Christmas game…
Indies had been carrying the entire video game world lately for me! Was not at happy with Scarlet and Violet after I had an amazing time with Legends Arceus so I got brave and tried Cassette Beasts and LOVED it! That’s my proof of how indies just have been better lately than most Triple A games minus Mario and Zelda. Hmm, I wonder if I still have my Cassette Beasts save so other than to try out the post game I can try out the gauntlet! 😋

Don’t know where I was when Drova was released and talked about. Another to add to my backlog list and we are only four days into this series. Here’s hoping for some good January sales.
I think a game missing from this list is Lorelei and The Laser Eyes.
Great efforts!
This year it has been chained echoes and then Sea of stars. Two amazing games
And the backlog grows! I’ve had my eye on Crow Country for a while, might be the perfect game to play after Silent Hill 2…
Indie devs are the unsung heroes of gaming. Sure once in a while you get a Team Cherry, but more often than not, you get devs that release some true gems and go unrecognized, for one reason or another (many times because the e-shop does not promote them), only to get ripped by the next big company...
Conscript has been super fun. I wouldnt have discovered it if it wasnt for you two. I hope both of you feel better soon.
Great video!! Definitely liked hearing about the indies!
it’s 4:00am in Australia 😞
an episode with a shoutout to red dwarf and pieberry? happy days!
I'm going to treat myself to the physical version of Witchspring based on the praise you guys have given it.
Animal Well. When I first saw the trailer I didn’t like the art style but after seeing so many positive reviews I gave it a go. It’s a great game and importantly… just 5 more minutes turns into an hour later. It will be interesting to see what there next game is.
Yess. Another Crabs Treasure. I keep forgetting about that. Time to wishlist and add to the backlog.
Thanks gents.
You got me curious about some new games, thanks
Found out about Eastward through you guys and loved it, so I'm excited to check out Bloomtown!
awesome vid fellas! cheers from SF!!
Lot of very interesting ideas in those games, nice to see them highlighted here.
