      As much as I love Dark Souls, it's just not designed to be pixel-precise in the way old Mario games were. Also, there's a lot of variety in terms of ways you can approach DS, and that's one of its strengths. Kaizo (as was stated in this video) thrives on there being ONE solution to any given situation, so these design philosophies are at odds. You can't make a section that ONLY works if you do a ridiculously precise freehand fireball toss unless everyone is playing pyromancer with the same stats, same spells, and same gear levels.
      Lucky for you CHALLENGE RUNS exist, so - if you're up for sinking your teeth into some ultra hard souls - try a fat rolling run or a SL1 run or a bow-only (Lobos is the godfather of this stuff, and he's done it all!)

    I never got to fully play, let alone even try to complete, a Kaizo Mario level, but on Super Mario Maker (way before I found out about Lunar Magic, and Mario's moveset versatility in SMW), I found some Kaizo Tutorial courses, and beating every challenge after felt very satisfying, including the Shell Jump, which I usually can never get right. Nowadays I don't have much free time, but one day I should dive into that rabbit hole again.

    Nice video! It was great to see your journey into the world of Kaizo hacks, and how you improved at them over time while making Snoman's Land. The latter seems like a really well designed Kaizo hack too, albeit one I didn't quite manage to finish due to my own inexperience at the genre.
    On another note, for anyone who's interested, Snoman here is also one of the people testing my own Super Mario World hack, since I thought it'd help the game's level design a lot to have people who are knowledgeable about game design help with some of the testing.

  • @DonYagamoth
    @DonYagamoth 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Quite interesting to hear your perspective on this :)
    Curiously, I Wanna Be The Guy fangames are very similar in this kind of aspect. Once you get a certain degree of mastery, it's fascinating to just see how far you can push the limit. Or maybe at some point you find a sweet spot for yourself in terms of what you enjoy in difficulty or similar things.
    One of the more famous examples is probably I Wanna Be The Boshy. Completing it for the first time was a journey, an adventure with so many, many hardships and obstacles. Enough obstacles for most people to never even try to get further - and that's fine, like Kaizo Mario hacks/levels, it's not for everyone. But if you happen to be someone to enjoy this kind of challenge, and for some reason decide to play an IWBTG-fangame again you've already completed, you will be amazed, on how weirdly much easier it all suddenly seems to be. It's still not easy, but sometimes the progression of learning a skill, and overcoming more and more difficult challenges can be discouraging, because it doesn't feel like you're making much progress. Then all of a sudden, replaying older levels, you may realize, that you've come a long way already - and that's very enjoyable

    I make a lot of kaizo levels in Super Mario Maker 2, and run two SMM2 kaizo teams, Team P-Switch and Team P-Speed. Kaizo levels are my favorite levels to make. I focus on fluid movement, making sure every action flows into the next in a natural way, so even if you die a thousand times (and on some levels, you just might) it'll still feel good to replay. Kaizo levels in SMM2 tend to be more focused on item abuse than in SMW, stuff like shell jumps, p-switch jumps, pow drops, tossing items, and never touching the ground, which adds to the feeling of fluid motion.

    You could also add Super Ryu World (1) to that list of beginner friendly hacks. Didn't use save states, though - except on the skytree stage.

      If you think about it, Dark Souls HEAVILY favors the player in a lot of situations. The reason why it's so difficult is that whenever you DO screw up, the game's not gonna reach out and grab your hand. It's gonna let you fall down and scrape your knee so that you'll KNOW to not do that ever again.

And which controller do you use? I stumbled upon the issue that the switch pro controller and the ps4 controller don't work for 8 directional dpad movements, the result of that is that i can't swim for example and snes like controllers are so expensive!
    Is there a certain setup you can recommend to enjoy kaizo at the highest quality when it comes to the hard and software?

    I'd definitely recommend Super Robfather World to anyone else learning to Kaizo. The first level isn't much harder than some of the challenges Nintendo puts in its actual games (but - the harder challenges, mind you), and unlike harder hacks like Grand Poo World, there's plenty of time to rest and plan before each jump in the earlier stages. I actually beat the whole hack (aside from the special cat world) before even beating Kaizo Kindergarten's second exam, because regrabs are REALLY HARD.
    It does help to be playing on an emulator so I can rebind the keys to not kill my thumbs.

    And now it's time for snowman to make a bunch of kaizo levels on mario maker 2. With a small amount loving them, while 99% of people will say that you suck because of the levels

    Warning, Mario kaizo is an concoction of madness. You might have beaten dark souls without dying and still die hundreds of times in this series.

    I just have one question. Why don't current 2d marios have the option to assign the run button to the shoulder buttons. That way your thumb doesn't have to do so much.

    Great vid, man. I've been trying to learn kaizo for months and some days I make progress and some days I play for 10 minutes get frustrated and shut it down. I have a question for you on regrabs. My biggest problem with regrabs is when im running. I think my thumb is too short to regrab properly while holding run, so I have to do a different awkward grip in order to regrab properly. Any tips on regrabs would be awesome. Thanks :-)

      @snomangaming  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah for the most part I am always holding run, Y for regular jumps and X for spin jumps. It definitely gets a little tricky with regrabs, but holding run is the way I do it

    One step above Kaizo Mario Hacks in difficulty are "Pit Hacks". Those are even harder and require a ton of knowledge of the game. "ColonThree" or ":3" is one I remember from videos. The story is that Bowser finally decided to actually lock the doors and remove the feasible exit altogether.
