    Oh, man. Thank you for covering this. I had NO IDEA this thing would record the stereo bus on channel 1 and 2 in your DAW and then the auxes on 3-10. That is so backwards, imo. Wow.

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I think while it confuses a lot of people that it makes a lot of sense. If you are just looking to make a quick stereo recording of your whole mix, it is 1-2. The individual channels then work out so they are just the channel number +10. Once you understand the thinking it is logical just not what most expect.

    Very useful video! Thanks, Ben! Great job!
    And here is my question:
    I'm using my DAW (Ableton) with UI24R for backing track and click along the live playing stuff with the band. When I'm routing it to a stereo (linked) channel in to the ui24 I don't have gain control anymore. It is obvious due to your clear explanation. But, it there any way to have it like "pre", not post..because I have very pure levels from the Daw routing it to ui24. I also use the click from DAW on separate channel so the musicians have it in the in-ear monitors and not in front. But in the aux we have very pure, low levels.
    Any chance to have DAW in the UI24R with a gain control channel?
    Thank you forward!
    Georgi,

    Thanks so much for saying at 1:10 "This routing is fixed. You cannot change the output routing from the Ui24r". That's what I needed to know.
    Just curious if you know why they decided to do this? It seems like it would be more logical to do 1-20 to match the hardware input numbering and then route the auxes etc...for 21-32.

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not exactly sure why. Either way works and it probably would have been less confusing for some but at the same time maybe they thought a lot of people would just want to record the mains so they made it 1-2. Someone may have also thought it was more logical because the Masters + Aux fit neatly 1-10. I am not sure but it does make sense, just maybe a different way of thinking than what some expect.

    Thanks for answering some of my questions. I'm wanting to route dry AUX channels to Logic Pro X, mix with presets then route back to UI24, then input the channel to video switcher for a livestream church service. Main mix will be FOH/Aux mix livestream. FOH sounds awful for livestream. Is my concept and thinking correct? Thanks

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would work. You may want to experiment with maybe just putting some room reverb on the masterof a post fader aux mix and seeing how that sounds before getting too complicated.
      This should resemble your mix in the room a bit better. What you are proposing offers an addition level of flexibility but adds a bit of complication so you'll just have to balance what is worth it!

      Hi! - You have a few approaches here. The Ui24r is really nice for this because you can set the monitoring up however you want and create custom mixes. Option 1 is send back each track to a separate channel - example -set output in your daw of track 1 to output 3 of your interface (Ui24r) and then patch on the Ui24r USB-DAW 3 patch to channel 3- 2-4-, 3-5 etc. (or whatever convention you want - I started at 3 leaving out 1-2 for mains but you could move them to 31-32 if you want) and then route those channels to the aux mix however you would like (most likely set to pre-fade). Option 2. You could also send multiple specific tracks to a given output - example - all guitars are out 3, all keys out 4, etc. Hope this helps. Let me know if that is unclear.

    You are mentioning that the Soundcraft Ui24R can be linked with Live Professor? Do you have any videos on that?

    • @beneasler3302
      @beneasler3302 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Karel, It can be used with Live Professor or Waves SuperRack Native. The issue in doing this is the latency you mention since this is really only practical over the USB interface. I would not recommend using it in a live situation unless you mean as an FX bus for things like delays and reverbs where latency is not as critical. You say mastering so I assume you mean master bus FX which I would not recommend. Danny Olesh has a video explaining the process using the predecessor of SuperRack (MultiRack)

    Hi, thx for the video. How would you hook this up, if you already own an UAD Apollo but you want more inputs for Live-Recording? Using the Apollo Pres with Console in Standalone mode running into the Ui24 afterwards? Is it possible to combine them as aggregate device in Mac OS? cheers

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Felix, glad you liked it! So you can do either of the options you want. If you just want the color of the Apollo pre, then yes, just run it into the Ui24r. That won't expand your channel but give you the preamp color you may want. However, an aggregate device is also possible and quite easy for Mac OS. Just plug in both devices, open the application Audio-MIDI setup. On the bottom left hit the +, then "create aggregate device." You will be able to see how the channels will be numbered in the aggregate device, give it a name, and then choose that as your interface in your DAW when you are ready to record.

    Ben, I'm coming to this rather late, but like many others here I'd like to thank you for the information provided, especially the table showing the routing of the Ui24R outputs to the DAW. I'll be using this to route audio to OBS for live streaming a church service, but I assume the same routing holds true. Your chart show only AUX 1-8 being routed. We would really like to route AUX 9 and 10 too. Can these "hardwired" routings be changed by patching Masters to Cascade Outs? If so, this would allow us to route all ten AUXs to the slot of our choice.
    Thanks again for this video. I'm working my way through your others while waiting for our Ui24R to arrive.

    I’m getting closer to understanding... from Logic back through ui24 for additional tracks, can I route my Stereo Output to a set of channels? Or do I have to route each channel to say 15&16?
    And then how do I patch / hear my already recorded tracks for overdubbing?
    That part of the video goes too fast for me.

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the Ui makes monitoring extremely versatile and you can do whatever youd like in terms of routing but the easiest way is to do your first option which is to route your stereo channel to any pair of channels on your ui, so just route DAW 1-2 to monitor your mix through your mains. To put this in your headphones you can simply monitor your main mix through headphones or route a separate bus where you route your headphones as the output. You can just use a matrix mirroring your main LR which is simplest or you could route all of the channels from logic back to separate channels on your ui and make a custom monitor mix. This is probably unnecessary in most use cases but you can do whatever you'd like within the channel count.

I use Pro tools and an Apollo X8, as an interface. Now, how do I get into the trash can? Or do I go into the Apollo! And, if Im recording live at practise, do we need all to be wearing headphones? Can I use the aux outs into IEM? Thanking you in advance. Peter

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter - The Ui24R has a built in audio interface so for most purposes here, you will NOT want to use your Apollo as that would be going into a second interface. You want to use the USB output found on the side of your Ui24r to a USB in on your Mac. On Pro Tools, you will simply choose the Ui24r as your audio interface and set each channel to the appropriate input according to the chart in my video. You do not need to wear headphones for a live recording assuming you are all amplified in the room and can otherwise hear each other. Yes, you can easily run any aux into an IEM. Just set up the patching so the aux is patched to the output your IEM is plugged into.

I find your video is very easy for follow and understand. I do have question about recording with recording live with ui24R and DAW: I have 2 existing audio tracks in Ableton Live 10, I want to play those tracks and recording my voice from ui24R into Ableton Live 10. • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rodney. Yes! To hear your DAW through the Ui24r, you will want to route your DAW back through the Soundcraft. The DAW should default to output 1-2. Set that up to return to a pair of channels on the Ui24r which I describe around the 7:20 mark I believe. You can then set that up to only come out of your headphones rather than the main speakers if you would like by sending it to the aux which your headphones are set to on the Ui24r. I have another video about auxes if you don't know how to do that part.

    Hi guys, thx a lot for this video. Is it possible to access my outboard gear (analog eq and compressors) via the i/o plugin in Logic and the aux sends on the soundcraft as outputs? Or how do I have to route my signal chain to, say, send my drum bus in logic to my outboard gear connected to the soundcraft and then back to logic? • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Michael I tried to respond earlier but not sure what happened to it so sorry if two show up here:
      This should work something like this
      1. Load the I/O plugin as you suggest.
      2. Set the output on that plugin as desired. Let's say you choose output 3 because we will assume you are using 1-2 for the main outs of your DAW..
      3. Route that output to a free channel, let's say channel 1, on the Ui24r by going to your routing page and routing DAW-3 to Channel 1. You should now receive this track on the Ui24r at channel 1.
      4. Now, we need to get your outboard gear into the chain. You can either do this through your main outputs if you are not in fact monitoring your daw here, or assuming you are, let's put the signal in an aux - say Aux 1. So raise fader for channel 1 on Aux 1.
      5. Now plug the physical Aux 1 output into your outboard gear. Plug your outboard gear back into a free channel - let's say channel 2.
      6. Finally, we are back to the input of your I/O plugin which should now be input 12 which is Channel 2.
      Hope that makes sense! You also will probably have to nudge the track to deal with latency compensation at some point in this process. I think I got all the steps you will need. This is not something I really do but that should be it.

      @@EaslerMedia Thanks a lot Ben! This makes sense and I think you're exactly right. What's confusing is that the aux outputs are treated as inputs in the DAW whereas the outputs in the DAW have to be routed to an input on the soundcraft (the plus ten rule in the DAW due to the physical outputs of the soundcraft adds another layer of complexity to the whole setup). But basically everything is possible and once it's all set you don't have to worry about it. The i/o pluging in Logic is able to take care of the latency problem. Thanks a lot!

      Hi Kay! You can simply go to the patching menu in settings and click on hardware outs and make your master l r double patched to whichever headphones you want. By default they are patched to headphones which will play whatever you solo. You could also switch one of your auxes to a matrix and then you can send any outputs including the lr to the matrix. This would give you a separate master control for the headphones in case you need independent volume since headphone one has a hardware volume control but #2 does not.

      You can route freely from the console. It is hard to understand your exact goals from your message here but there is indeed latency over USB which your computer can report to you in your DAW easily in the audio setup. I am not sure if you are meaning for playing back usb tracks in a live setting where latency won't matter so much as this is still a mixer so that part has basically no latency so if you are just adding virtual channels in the form of prerecorded music, that would work fine.

    How to get a good high volume level in usb Stick recording?

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two things here that will help get the best results. First, you are probably running the board a little "cold." This is easy to do if you have speakers that are plenty powerful for the room. In short, you want to get your gain up at the start of the signal chain. So turn the channel gain up until you are averaging around -12 to -6 db without clipping. Raise the faders to where you want to operate and then either turn your speakers down if it is too loud in the room or turn your master output knobs down on the Ui. I would suggest keeping them and the master fader at unity and turning your amps down to the appropriate level but there are different schools of thought there. The most important thing is that you get the gain at the front of the chain. If you are recording individual channels (multi track), you are getting the signal right after the gain stage so you need to make sure it is a good signal.
      If you just want a stereo recording, you could record an aux that is set to matrix so it is just your main l/r feed and then gain it up with a compressor if you wanted more gain that way.
      I may be wrong here, but I do believe the Ui does drop something like 6-8 db on the recorded level to allow for some headroom as well. I will have to check that but I do remember that being the case on the Signature 22 MTK mixer.

      Hello! You can not do this on a channel by channel basis. However, if you record one of the Auxes, you can send a single channel to any aux and that would be post everything so you could just record that aux. You can do this for each aux simultaneously. If you are only recording a channel at a time, you can even just send it through on the master (1-2) and then you will be sending post everything as well.

      Absolutely. Just select the Ui as your interface on whatever you are streaming to and select the outputs you want to record. While you could use the regular main mix, it is not uncommon to have a separate matrix mix for the live stream so that you can mix groups and the balance could be different compared to in a live room (example, you have plenty of drums live and need little reinforcement but you need them in a mic for the live stream). 7:30 now you have DAW connected to channel 1, but you are not able to move the Gain pot, only the fader. My question is if there's any way to increase DAW volume over the top of the fader. In my setup, i can listen the core audio very loud in my PA (youtube videos for example), but I can't reach the same loudness with DAW playback. I get only little of the volume. So, when I try to record the band with the Metronome in headsets, the instruments are drowning the sound of the metronome. I tried it all into the DAW, everything is top of volume but still not reaching even half of the volume of Core audio. Hope you understand, not a native English speaker, thanks!

    • @EaslerMedia
      @EaslerMedia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Have you compared this with the volume out of another interface? It should be at unity gain to the computer sending out to the UI which is why there is no gain control. If you're hearing the daws metronome well, it sounds like you have some Gain stage issues and don't have enough Gain coming out of the DAW. However, a couple things to keep in mind. You can route the metronome to channel 3 and your daw mains to 1-2. You could even be more particular if you want. You should also expect less output from your daw than a mastered song as you should have some headroom when mixing but if you're blasting the ui's headphone amp and its not enough that indicates something else is off in your signal chain either recording too low of level or not enough Gain somewhere.

      If I understand your question, you are sending backing tracks in some instances to a separate mixer at FOH presumably in a larger venue so they have control. If they need control of the individual tracks, it sounds like you are trying to give them a hardware (xlr) output. You would be limited to 8 or 10 outputs if you count the master as 2. You could send a different instrument or group to each aux and then those outputs to the foh mixer. Is this what you mean?

That being said, what you said at the end does not make sense. The in 1-2 should be your main mix meaning post fader and reacting to all faders. Regardless, there are a couple of options that I see. Option 1 - Consider switching to running everything you need in the Zoom meeting to the main outputs. Set up an aux mix or matrix that is whatever you need in the room and send those outputs to the room speakers. That way whatever audio you need in the room goes through the output and the computer sees what you want. Option 2 - Download the app called "Loopback" by Rogue Amoeba. So two options: you can route the audio back to your Ui24r by Selecting "DAW 1-2" as your input for whatever channels you want the audio to come back on to your Ui24r. You can also set a different in and out on windows as well though: see this link: support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht510203-choose-sound-output-input-device-windows-10 and you should be able to do this in Studio One as well: slatedigital.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360008932073-Studio-One-I-O-Settings#:~:text=Navigate%20to%20the%20“Studio%20One,Input%20as%20the%20Recording%20Device.&text=You%20will%20need%20to%20ensure,for%20the%20“Input”%20section.

However, I would say that doing this all through the Ui is more elegant anyway since you'd have just one connection. The way you described it would work perfectly. Your main output on your DAW would be 1-2 by default but you should be able to choose a different one if you for some reason needed a different mix for your stream vs headphones or something like that. I am not sure exactly what you are doing but it sounds like you just need the main mix which should be 1-2. You will want to patch them to a pair of channels and then send that to whatever aux your headphones are patched to (you indicate 9-10). While you could make the out from your DAW anything, just stick with 1-2 unless there is a reason not too. Then on the Ui24r, in your patching, route your DAW 1-2 to any pair of channels you like - let's say you choose 23-24 and you should stereo link them/pan if you want to be in stereo. Then, you need to route them to an aux of your choice which you should also make stereo. Let's say Aux 9-10 as you suggested this. So, you would raise channel 23-24 ONLY on Aux 9-10. Finally, on your patching page, you will want to make sure that on the output page that Aux 9-10 is routed to whichever set of headphones you want to send it to. It sounds complicated the first time but it really makes sense once you understand the flow and once you have set it, you don't really have to do it again anyway unless you build a new show from scratch.

Beyond that, this not only allows you to record all of the channels before your processing so you can make it sound great in your studio, but you can also record any built in processing by recording your mains or an aux so you can get those tap points you want. You also have a built in zero latency mixer as you requested..just route your daw back to the Ui24r and then use it as a near zero latency monitor for recorded signals. What interface offers more really?

      First, I like this mixer a lot but I agree that DAW USB interface has issues. In particular, the master/aux outputs are post--fader only. So you can't really monitor particular master/aux and record them usefully. Even if the aux/master faders are set to a level sufficient to provide audible outputs, the level available to the DAW may be *very* much lower than those on the actual channels proper (which are post-gain/pre-fader).
      I don't see why there is not a screen controlling the level that is sent on the USB channels independently of the physical aux output levels, I suspect the hardware can do it and it is a matter of the firmware supporting it Depending on the particular needs you may be able to get around this by creating a duplicate aux that you don't monitor. Fortunately there are more virtual aux channels than physical aux outputs.
      Another annoyance is that (unlike the Soundcraft 22MTK) all of the channels are brought into the master mix both (USB and physical out). As I recall, the 22MTK allows a channel strip to not be included into the the master/usb (3 buttons enable the mst/grp1/grp2). Again you mostly can get around this by using/routing Aux channels to the physical masters but a master send would eliminate the need to eat up aux channels.
      I reiterate, I like this mixer, it's built like a brick outhouse, the WiFi is rock solid, the sound is good, and the general plan of the the browser based control is very usable and novel (any device with WiFi/browser can control it).
