- This is an instructional video about the Bucyrus Erie 10B excavator. It includes some facts and history about the 10B, and some information about these 2 machines and how the machines operate and the functions of the controls.
That's a nice machine;very wokable and totally restorable
Thank you Sir! My father operated a 22 B model in the Detroit area back in the 1950s and this brought back fond memories. Take care!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed.
i've been watching and enjoying some of your shows on these machines. i've operated modern excavators and chucked a job in because i was expected to operate an excavator with 6 sticks, having used modern 4 stick machines. these really old string machines were a challenge. at 1:09 you mention hercules. i have a 'hercules diesel' piston. that's what it has written on the side. i use it for an ashtray. it and its 3 mates and tons of pistons i cleaned out of an engineering workshop run by a hoarder who had been collecting pistons since before the second world war. i kept just this 1 piston because i'd never seen anything built like it. for example, 2 oil rings, 4 compression rings, 'heat treated', 'zollner 174' (whatever that is) everyone who's mechanically minded takes a fancy to it. it must have been a great engine.
thanks for the great video!!
Great video, my friend has a 10b that he just got running. We learned what the levers do by trial. This cleared up some questions I had, thanks.
Very informative article thank you
Your welcome, glad you enjoyed.
Phil, thanks for info, I am tearing down engine at this time and hope to get it running again, instead of having to replace it. I suspect the crane boom and dragline setup to be pretty rare. Only seen a couple videos of RB-10 models.
Thanks, wanted to show that I was making some progress on the machine. Plan on going with the yellow/maroon similar to the Belleview machine. Hope to start the paint in a couple weeks.
Awesome, thank you very much.
awesome vid!
Your welcome. My only operating issue with the '51 is the steering. The small jaw clutch behind the bottom sprocket is worn badly, and will barely grab unless you press your foot against the sprocket, and I think the brake bands have oil on them, which leaked from the gearcase. The brakes shouldn't be too hard to fix; the oil leak, I am not looking forward to at all, but it's on the list.
When I was very young one of these machines was installing water mains down the street outside our house. The utilities were put in at various times, and a few years after the shovel a Cleveland wheel trencher was working down the street. I was fascinated by that machine! Around 1968-1971 it was a wheeled excavator for sewers.
Have you viewed the "steam crane" channel? I think it's a club to bring your machines and basically play in the dirt. :)
I have viewed the Steam Crane channel, good stuff. Have been fascinated by these machines since I was a kid, became an adult and had to have one.
Thanks for the info, I found a 10B shovel and I'm trying to figure out if I have the ability to move it
Height to top of cab is 9'9", max width at crawlers is 7'8". Length of course depends on the boom. The shovel boom is 13'6" long and is 15' high at a 45 degree angle. The channel boom is 28' long and is 23' high at a 40 degree angle. In lowered position with shovel boom I would estimate 23' length and with channel boom 36'6" in length.
I just bought one of these. I saved it from being cut up for scrap. Very rusty , engine locked solid. Seems complicated to operate.
Nice, it can be a lot of work, but a great spare time project. A little difficult to operate at first, but pretty difficult to actually get good at operating.
Ohhh man. She's a beauty rust and all.
I do have the orginal manuals for both of the 10B's (and the 22B), but not the resources to get them into a computer file. I know there would be demand for them, as I have never seen any info on the net or anything on ebay.
Neat old machine. Thanks for the video explaining the controls. How is the drive transferred from the engine to the tracks? Thanks.
Thanks! There is a propel shaft (like a drive shaft) that runs out the center/bottom of the machine to the drive axle.
@@jac5344 Thanks.
I hope you still read comments. Could you explain a little more on how the machine propels and it's steering works? Thanks. 🤔🤔🤔
In the drive axle there are 2 basket clutches, just like a motorcycle clutch. When you turn the steering crank it will disengage one clutch and eventually apply the brake. Turning the crank all the way in either direction will disengage both clutches and apply the brakes to lock the crawlers for digging.
@@jac5344 thanks for the answer. Sometimes I have a hard time visualizing the drive.
Great video, but the TH-cam video stabilization makes it look unnatural
3 yards? I have a hard time believing that, unless I heard wrong.
3/8 of a yard.
about how big are they? length, width, height?
Where in the USA can I get 10B engine and transmission parts?
You could probably use any small International or Allis Chalmers engine in the 30 to 40hp range. The transmission I'm not too sure about.
