Rahdo, a correction. The game's subtitle isn't "Nagala", it's "Naqala". "Naqala" is an Arabic word meaning "to move", and it's a common alternate name for the ancient game Mancala - which, by no coincidence whatsoever, Five Tribes borrows its meeple distribution mechanic from. HTH, HAND!
Just a note, your left and right sound channels seem off. Much louder on the left. In the future you should convert your track to mono since it's just audio dialogue. Dialogue in movies/media is almost always just mono. It'll save a lot of people from headaches when listening with headphones. Thanks!
Christos Tzeremes yeah, it's a new camera that's very sensitive about audio direction (my old camera which broke was practically mono). unfortunately the new camera doesn't have a mono-option and i'm not crazy about having to spend hours upon hours reprocessing vids. i have ordered a lapel mic though... should be here soon :)
Hey, A little trick I use to help with the audio-problem is: watching the normal version muted and listen to the static cam at the same time It's just a bit fiddly to get them synced. but since you don't see richard talking, it isn't that bad if they're off-sync a bit.
That tile with the 3 white meeples was worth more than just 12. The tile happens to allow you to spend those meeples for a Djinn. It's really worth 24 if you get that 8 point Djinn. You really should bid higher in such a situation.
nothing. it just sits there empty, waiting for another meeple to get dropped on it later, which would allow it to be claimed subsequently (this gets demoed in the extended video IIRC)
Hey, love the detail in your run through thanks! One thing I'm confused on though, in ur run-through when you manage to claim a second tile using assassins to murder a lone meeple you then activate the tile action. However in the rule book it says under 2.5 tile actions 'if you took control of a second tile this turn using assassins, you do not get to perform the actions of that tile; only those of the tile you ended your move on.' Have I misunderstood this??
Hey, Richard and folks! Recently I bought Five Tribes ( based on Rahdo's runthrough video as well ) and fell in love with it. Could you please recommend me some more games the fit the same criteria: - simple mechanics, yet a lot of strategic depth - multiple ways / strategies to win the game - easy to learn, hard to master Thank you!
Rob Pearson they're working on it... tiffany is cleaning it up, and she's kind of swamped at work at the moment, but she's devoting every spare minute to it, I'm lead to understand... it will be posted, don't worry :)
***** She can't end on that space because she must end by dropping a meeple on a space with another meeple of the same color. You cannot end your turn on an empty square.
It would be really confusing if you invited Rhiannon over for your game night... "Thanks for inviting me over for game night you guys. I have to get going." " Would you stay if we promised you heaven? " "What? No, I have to get going. And I lost every game we played." " Will you never win? "
Where's the best place to order this from in Canada? I expect it will take a little while for the local shops to get it in stock, and I really want to try it!
Looks like a really fun game. I can see why it has the hype. Game boy geek also has a review up if you want to see more opinions (spoiler, he also loved it). Thanks for the huge in depth run through Rahdo!! Love your videos! Your analysis paralysis gets me all worked up, I can't decide what you should do either! Heh.
A friend of mine really loves 5 tribes and it has really going up in my favorite list the last 6 months. I am looking for a game that has the same feeling and challenge as 5 tribes. We he is over, its mainly 5 tribes :) All other games are not up his ally somehow. Thanks for any reply.
I'm currently deciding between Trajan and this title for two. I know they're very different experiences, but would your advice be to go Trajan without a doubt, since 2 is my preferred count?
jaxommm well, the game is language independent (they use icons on the djinns and tiles), so you'd just need to download translated rules of boardgamegeek - english, french and german are available so far, and I bet given time there'll be other options as well :)
***** Ah, yes, thanks...I was just wondering about in-game text. If the whole game is iconographic all the more brilliant! My wife isn't fond of reading a lot of text on cards and the like! Thanks Richard!
With that start, I definitely would have outbid 12 to go first, especially in 2 player. The person who goes first and gets the Elders, space, and Djinn gets a good return whereas the other person overpaid for 2nd turn.
***** The turn order thing. You went for the 12 point spot to get the awesome white combo, but I just thought, that you maybe didn't pay for that spot. Edit. Just quickly watched the segment again and you did pay. Sorry for the confusion...
What an ass! He is outsmarting his virtual Jen subconsciously. She doesn't break his strategy by paying 18 because that would 'be insane' but then when Jen decides if she wants to pay 1 and 4 or whatever, he decides no do 1 and 0 because Rahdo isn't going to break me up. And then you go and do that lol....
It's because your strategy is dependent on the board layout for that particular game (which always changes each new game), the type of merchant cards available at market, and the djinns available as well...
I think that you can't have a starting setup with 3 meeples of the same color right? Someone said that on another video. You'ld have to separate these 3 elders you had at the start. Don't take my word for it though. Someone with the rules could verify that.
You can have 3 meeples of the same tile in the starting setup... in the rulebook it doesn't say you can't have and it actually has n image of the setup where there are 3 blue meeples in the same tile
***** Oh! Thank you so much! I thought it was just a random name you came up with to illustrate the second player's turn. Anyways, first time checking your channel. Your gameplay videos are extremely entertaining and clarifying
Lucas Raiol yeah, i've been filming & referencing Jen for so long now, I tend to forget that plenty of new folks to the show have no idea what i'm talking about! :)
Man, this game is so conceptually clean and straight froward... An instant classic for me.
I love the sacrificing of the elders to the Great Chicken God!
thanks for teaching me this game, saved me a half hour of learning before going to board game night
Another great run through! I like the player reference sheet. It looks overwhelming at first, but it becomes fairly intuitive after a few rounds.

Nice video, gameplay and explanation Rahdo. I just got mine today in Brazil. Thank you!

Awesome run through.
Got this game to play with my son.
Thanks for the video.

What happens to the empty tile you leave behind when you move the meeples?
nothing. it just sits there empty, waiting for another meeple to get dropped on it later, which would allow it to be claimed subsequently (this gets demoed in the extended video IIRC)
oh thank you! And thanks for replying!
can't wait to play this game

timestamp please
it seems fun and easy to learn. I'm on the fence on buying it because of the cost!
Could you please make a run through for Catan.
doesn't work for 2p unfortunately. maybe shea might cover it at some point :)

TheGrooves wow, there's lot of games to choose from. you might want to ask that at my forum at guild.rahdo.com :)
***** Thanks! Will do!
Trajan is a heavier game than Five Tribes but it has a similar "Mancala" mechanic. I highly recommend it.
Speaking of Spooning Meeples - did anyone video your event at GenCon? Been waiting for someone to post the I Dark Overlord game.
Rob Pearson they're working on it... tiffany is cleaning it up, and she's kind of swamped at work at the moment, but she's devoting every spare minute to it, I'm lead to understand... it will be posted, don't worry :)
***** Sweet - I figured someone recorded it!
Any reason Jen wouldn't want to end her turn in the space you left empty from your first turn?
Bryce Christiansen not that i can recall, but it's been a half year since i filmed. i probably went whichever way i did to demonstrate stuff :)
***** She can't end on that space because she must end by dropping a meeple on a space with another meeple of the same color. You cannot end your turn on an empty square.

That mug!! May I ask where did you buy that mug from?? But love your runthroughs, as always.
answer at faq.rahdo.com :)

for us, hands down Trajan. better as a 2p game. but it is much heavier, so be warned :)
I second this. Trajan is the better of the mancala mechanism games
trajan
Looks like the game isn't language dependent? So I can buy the French version here in Switzerland despite my meager French language skills?
jaxommm well, the game is language independent (they use icons on the djinns and tiles), so you'd just need to download translated rules of boardgamegeek - english, french and german are available so far, and I bet given time there'll be other options as well :)

Hi! Five Tribes/Quadropolis/Adventure land? :) What is the best? I can't decide :) Thanks!
quad for us
Did you pay for the auction? Looks like a really cool and fun game this one. Definately high on my wishlist right now.
not sure what you mean about the auction? :)
***** The turn order thing. You went for the 12 point spot to get the awesome white combo, but I just thought, that you maybe didn't pay for that spot.
Edit. Just quickly watched the segment again and you did pay. Sorry for the confusion...
chicken pot, how I missed you !
My copy has been send to me today :D I'm looking forward to this one.
Cool! Where did you order from?
directly from days of wonder
i am beginning to see why i should stop watching your vids.. i have ordered alot of board games.. ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
Do I sense another Gen Con hype game runthrough coming?? Can we expect an Imperial Settlers runthrough as well??
nope, no interest in that one... to conflict heavy for us
Damn :-( wanted to get a feel about that one. Thanks Richard!
Woooohoooooooo looking forward to this
You Know You're a Rahdo Junkie When... #273
...you hear Richard refer to "GenCon" and you immediately first think "Jen-con."
This game makes me feel really stupid. I understand the mechanics in terms of how to play, but the strategy completely eludes me. :(

Paulo Renato Thanks for the clarification. I like it better that way as it makes the bidding system more relevant for situations like that.
Who the HELL is Jen?
Lucas Raiol jen.rahdo.com
***** Oh! Thank you so much! I thought it was just a random name you came up with to illustrate the second player's turn.

Lucas Raiol yeah, i've been filming & referencing Jen for so long now, I tend to forget that plenty of new folks to the show have no idea what i'm talking about! :)
The audio is really annoying
Jim Ferguson yeah, sorry about that. it was a new camera and i was still learning the ins and outs of it
