I was a Republican when I was young, and remember Rush Limbaugh scaring me into thinking I'd be denied jobs because they needed to fill a role with "any black guy." I've never been denied a job I knew I was qualified for, and I can't imagine the anger of knowing I had been, if I was living someplace where I was seen as an outsider. I also have never worked with a black peer who wasn't equally competent. It's all a scare tactic, like pretty much everything in the GOP for the last decade or two, which is why I left long ago, and why I'd never be a swing voter today. They're not shoehorning in idiots just to check a compliance box, they're making sure actual prejudice is not keeping qualified people out.

Thank you for your comment. Rush Limbaugh may be the single most responsible for what the GOP is today. His hate for the Clinton' s gave others a road map to bash the dems. Others on both sides realize they too could make millions to destroy political norms making us vs them common.

My credentials (and education) got me to the table only to have the selecting official lie and say I never appeared for the interview. I’ll never forget how fellow employees mocked and ridiculed me as being a part of affirmative action in the mid 80’s. My career after that selection soared and ended with close to 40 years of govt. service. The in between stories are too painful to re-address. Never despise the struggle, it has built character and resilience to stand in our truth. Mentors and coaches play a vital role in ensuring equity and fair diversity in the workforce. The definition of minority has changed in 2023. Blessings.
Remember, Affirmative Action was a start to compensate for historical wrong to blacks. Also, those blacks who are given those opportunities are 3 times smarter than most of those average non-blacks who benefit from their whiteness (family affiliations, etc.), not their smartness.
Kind of makes me wonder how restricted is the speech from Candace Owens, Jesse Lee Peterson, Larry Elder, and the people wearing the mandatory "Blacks for Trump" shirts at the rally. I don't want to assume they're just political props, but there's definitely money in being a minority associated with conservative politics and media. I'm wondering why that isn't considered a form of Affirmative Action.
She said it perfectly at 7:50 that she was not pulled in because she was unqualified; she was sought so they could pull in the qualified. Everyone gets help along the way!!
You just said everyone gets help along the way. Explain who is disadvantaged in our society based on race alone. Who is Joy Reed talking about when saying that?
Sure thing......White Privilege Hunter gets $$$ and get-outta-jail favors from his WHITE FATHER. In return, White Father Joe gets $$$ from his White Privileged son.
Joy put it brilliantly, indeed, your great grandpa's name on a university building is affirmative action, your uncle's purse wide open for a donation is affirmative action, etc. I recognize the pattern. Those students from really privileged families, are sometimes bright, but they more often brought up to deliver and so they sometimes are diligent and do what is expedient. Like never to read an extracurricular book, always find ways to ferret out what topic would please a tutor and then write essays about that, but not on something of interest to themselves or today's society - in other words, they know the winning game. Really brilliant students from outside might bring vitalizing challenges to the minds of fellow-students and teachers alike and courageously address difficult problems - they are like blood transfusion for old decrepit institutions, mostly bestow new energy and new vitality - and honor - being fore-runners! Thank you all for today's very truthful video, I loved it!
Are you being sarcastic? Perhaps our constitution should prohibit preference based on wealth, legacy, ingenuity, or intelligence. But it doesn't. It prohibits preference based on race. That is what these cases were about. No more, no less. Joy is just putting her usual biased misinformation spin on things.
Affirmative Action may get a person through the door, but their grades is what keeps them in the room. Their making the grade means they belong. Opponents want to pretend otherwise!
@@RC-rk2xs that's the point, they don't drop out. Easier to argue affirmative action means they don't belong. Their grades got them the attention and most remain 'A' students who finish in the top half of their class, which means they do better than 50% of their more privileged peers, despite the many hardships endured. That's proof enough that there was value in the program. Detractors conveniently gloss over that fact.

As for Thomas for all his “success” is just a fraud sadly in his own mind, so apparently mentally weak that any help he received automatically makes him worthless. Such a sad little man everybody needs and if their lucky gets help along their journey. If you think you don’t belong then you don’t, it doesn’t matter how you get there, it’s what you do once you’re there
Thomas was entrapped by GOP big donors and has been blackmailed every since by them. They paid that woman to marry him and be his immediate handler, as she, herself is being handled by some male racist, too. I suspect Gin has a separate, secret account offshore where biannual deposits are made for enduring looking at Tom, all these years and tolerating being in bed with such a miserable piece of -hit! She is hoping more than anybody that Clarence be impeached, so her tour of duty on behalf of white racists can finally be over!
And THIS IS what unwarranted, white privilege means: ''According to a 2011 study by the Chronicle of Higher Education, a review of 30 elite universities' admissions processes found that a legacy connection gave an applicant a 23.3 percentage point advantage over a non-legacy applicant. For applicants who had a parent who was an alum, the average advantage was 45.5 percentage points.'' Oh, and make no mistake, it isn't going to give White trash from Red States such as yourself, any more chances to get into Harvard, because most of the ''legacy'' elite in Ivy Leagues universities are from Blue States as scores/per states statistics make very clear. You're welcome for this much needed, reality check, pal.
No that's not what it means. Woke is upper middle class white people that think being submissive and groveling to certain minority groups is how you fix race problems. So maybe you are woke but nobody is learning anything from it.
Wow! Always knew that Joy was smart but didn't know she went to Harvard or that she knew Justice Brown while attending Harvard. I just don't get how Clarence Thomas can sleep at night. His hypocrisy is amazing!
Also, I love your story of how you got to Harvard. And I love that you toughed it out at that school. I love that you got to put those people in their place "live" on national TV. Bite me, fancy self-important kids. Good for you. Go Joy!!!
Joy reid say she got into Harvard because of a really high GPA and fantastic S.A.T. Scores. Which is what the standards should be, a very high score to get in. So, if her statement is true Affirmative Action wouldnt be needed then.
I don't believe her story one bit. Did she apply to Harvard? If not, why not, and why did they "seek her out"? If she did apply why weren't the same standard applied to her as they were to everyone else? She may have been "qualified' such that she met the minimum standard for acceptance, but that does not mean she was the best qualified candidate. What happened to the person whose place she took because they were not "sought out" because they weren't black?
Thank you Joy for outlining the deplorable nature of Judge Thomas's SCOTUS career. He is one messed up man. Your personal story brings tears to my eyes. Legacy awhole arrogant spoiled rich kids taking up space in our best colleges is a waste of that resource.
That's what I keep telling all the self-loathing, wannabe woke, Regressive-Left white Americans who are helping to plan their own demise. But their public virtue is more important than their survival, apparently.

So now he sits on that Court pushing for decisions and opinions that punish us and anyone else who today's American right wing extremists want white voters to see as the other so that those rich white elites who are mentally stuck in the 17th, 18th, 19th and early to mid 20th centuries take this country back to those earlier times where insecure rich white men held all the power and no one questioned it as long as it was only straight white men who had any rights.
@@DeRocco21interesting perspective. I’m fine with the ruling but it’s several generations too early. Half the country lived through red lining and the several rights movement. We aren’t on equal footing. Generations of black people missed out on the thriving economy of past decades which is why the Average black family is far behind the average white family. Too many root causes to unpack, but affirmative action was a fast track to help close the gap. This should have been studied from an economic perspective.
I have seen black people be extremely racist to OTHER black people! I don't understand it! I do think the media plays a part with images they use; it's like brainwashing.

Yeah, but as resentful as Thomas was, did he reject anything he felt was due to affirmative action? Guess that makes him a hypocrite on yet another level.
Well-spoken Joy about Thomas trying to destroy everything that benefited him throughout life. My father is a GOP adherent who does exactly the same thing. Recently he said to me I never took help and when I pointed out all the help he received from people that I knew helped him he got very angry. I saw a gentleman unfortunately I don't remember his name but he was asked why people hate him so much beside the fact of the color of his skin and he stated it's because in their minds his success in life somehow diminishes their own. I'm 55 years old and I've gotten to the point in my life where I don't care about other people's success I know my successes and regardless of what other people think or do or say about me is completely irrelevant I know who I am. It just saddens my heart that people are like this
Equality is a step backwards, to the bulk of White America. All their affluence and comfort means nothing to them if the brown guy down the road is just as comfortable and affluent. The American Caste system needs an underclass of Sub Americans to float their luxury barges on, kick down on..... Or, none of their wealth, position or prestige means anything to them. The self proclaimed American White Royalty has to be "above" or it's of no value. They don't care about you, and if you gotta ask the price of admission.....you can't afford it. Ugly Americans.
Say it Joy. Affirmative Action is NOT CHARITY. IF a person doesn't qualify ( GPA, SAT SCORES etc) they can't get in. Affirmative Action was a way to make sure people were given a equal chance.
No way is affirmative action equal. Work = reward. Government sponsored racism is disgusting. Remember affirmative action helped give us the most racist president in fifty years president Barry Obama.
Black people=13.6% of the US population. 22.2% of the US Supreme Court is black. No need for affirmative action, unless it's for all the people that this policy held back because of their skin color. If black culture wasn't so awful(thug life) in the US maybe the majority of black kids would have a father at home and their kids would do better. Isn't that the real issue here?!
Affirmative Action has helped more white wm get educated and jobs than it has black kids get into college. Plus it takes more than skin color to get into college u literally have to be a well rounded student. Yet the minute some other race doesn't get into there choice of Ivy league colleges they blame Affirmative Action and not maybe they didn't qualify. R they never blame the legacy admission kids. It always the black kid took my spot due to Affirmative Action. Affirmative action has gotten reprieves many times. It's duration was as long as it needed to be. Ascension involves effort it's not entirely institutional.

Sure thing......White Privilege Hunter gets $$$ and get-outta-jail favors from his WHITE FATHER. In return, White Father Joe gets $$$ from his White Privileged son.
So DEVIL clarence thomas is the spitting image of Devil trump? What a wasted soul because Devil is at Supreme Court for life why not Prison for life?
Thank you for your interesting and insightful comment
Are you being sarcastic? Perhaps our constitution should prohibit preference based on wealth, legacy, ingenuity, or intelligence. But it doesn't. It prohibits preference based on race. That is what these cases were about. No more, no less. Joy is just putting her usual biased misinformation spin on things.

Affirmative Action may get a person through the door, but their grades is what keeps them in the room. Their making the grade means they belong. Opponents want to pretend otherwise!
@@RC-rk2xs there’s no logic in your point. You clearly don’t understand the admissions process.

New respect for Joy, she said it plain and simple!

So you believe that blacks and Latinos, are the only group that cannot succeed in education and therefore need a helping hand?
To everyone that learned something of value from Joy here, that is what being woke means.
And THIS IS what unwarranted, white privilege means: ''According to a 2011 study by the Chronicle of Higher Education, a review of 30 elite universities' admissions processes found that a legacy connection gave an applicant a 23.3 percentage point advantage over a non-legacy applicant. For applicants who had a parent who was an alum, the average advantage was 45.5 percentage points.''
Oh, and make no mistake, it isn't going to give White trash from Red States such as yourself, any more chances to get into Harvard, because most of the ''legacy'' elite in Ivy Leagues universities are from Blue States as scores/per states statistics make very clear. You're welcome for this much needed, reality check, pal.
That explains a lot lol!!! Who could find value in what she says?
No that's not what it means. Woke is upper middle class white people that think being submissive and groveling to certain minority groups is how you fix race problems. So maybe you are woke but nobody is learning anything from it.

Why do you think that was accurate at all?
Massive jerk judge Thomas blatantly pulling the ladder up behind him.
His anger at his race is apparent. Something he can’t accept or change. It’s sad but dangerous to hate yourself.
That's what I keep telling all the self-loathing, wannabe woke, Regressive-Left white Americans who are helping to plan their own demise. But their public virtue is more important than their survival, apparently.
@DeRocco21 try again. He's angry at his own people because he never got over his own insecurities about gaining white acceptance.

U that less than 15% of black kids attending those Ivy league schools compared to over 35% of white legacy admission kids that no way didn't take anyone spot they worked hard really
Now I want to hear more about Joy Reid’s story! This is why affirmative action matters.
Affirmative action has gotten reprieves many times. It's duration was as long as it needed to be. Ascension involves effort it's not entirely institutional.
🤣🤦🏽♂️🤣Today we learned that affirmative action would reject Lebron in the NBA, and instead draft Justin Bieber not for merit but for absolutely no reason.
@@RC-rk2xs The black students sought after by Ivy recruiters tend to be exemplary people beyond test scores. The SCOTUS decision did not strip Universities from the right to take into account a portfolio of the student's attributes, including their essay discussions about their journeys as black members of society. She's the take-down queen of the high and mighty from Tuckems to Thomas. Chris Hayes always seems to ask the right questions and is excellent with explanations.
In 1971, Justice Thomas was admitted to Yale's Law School as part of the affirmative action practice
Kkklarance is S*mbo on steroids.
The media isn't supposed to "shape" your thoughts lol it's supposed to give us information and let us decide for ourselves. You're just admitting you'll do whatever MSNBC tells you
Joe Biden voted to bar the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare from requiring schools to provide information on the racial makeup of their student bodies - thereby making it impossible for the government to withhold federal funds from school districts that refused to integrate
The NAACP called Biden’s proposal “an anti-black amendment.” The Senate’s sole African-American member, Ed Brooke, called it “the greatest symbolic defeat for civil rights since 1964.” But Biden helped his fellow liberals reconcile themselves to the wrong side of history by recasting integrationists as the real racists.
“The new integration plans being offered are really just quota systems to assure a certain number of blacks, Chicanos, or whatever in each school. That, to me, is the most racist concept you can come up with,” Biden stated “What it says is, ‘In order for your child with curly black hair, brown eyes, and dark skin to be able to learn anything, he needs to sit next to my blond-haired, blue-eyed son.’
Absolutely 👍
Well said Joy!
Your words Joy give me joy. I’m white and believe in leveling the field.
Well said Joy. I agree with you comment. It was obvious about Thomas from the start.
Brilliant Joy!!! RESPECT
The utter hypocrisy of Thomas. In 1971, Justice Thomas was admitted to Yale's Law School as part of the affirmative action practice.
Similar to Chump. Wanting to be in high social circles and doing it in the most corrupt way possible.
@@candygurl Decision today is aligned perfectly with Martin Luther King Jrs teaching.
So what's ur problem???
@@whicker59 if that’s the case. Then why do these facts show differently? how? By race/ethnicity, 5,545 White, 935 Black, and 2,354 Asian students out of a total of 14,567 are attending at Yale University.
@@whicker59 in 1971 Clarence Thomas benefited from Affirmative Action in his admittance to Yale Law school. Now look at the 2023 statics even above ☝️. Facts always outweigh stupidity. 🤦🏾♀️
Completely DISGUSTING, CLARENCE!! Your ANCESTORS are ROLLING IN THEIR GRAVES. Shame, shame, SHAME !!!
Lol😭😭😭
He doesn't like his self.😢
If other minorities can keep their heads down, study hard and get in on Merit, surely you can too..?

What a great man Justice Thomas is and such an honorable and uncompromising justice dedicated to the Constitution only,! BRAVO! GOD bless you sir!
@@itzasweater9621 Amen!
@@itzasweater9621 Exactly!!!!
@@itzasweater9621 Clarence Thomas seem to forget what got him to where he is, Affirmative Action! The very program that he pulled the plug on! And I am not discriminating on anyone! Clarence hates the fact that without Affirmative Action he would not be in the position he is in! Yes he is a hypocrite so you shut up! Thank you Joy Reid for your commentary about your experiences as a Black woman going to Harvard University.
This is such a moving discussion with Joy telling parts of her life that cannot be known if not lived! God bless Joy Reid and I am so happy she has managed to live her best academic life!! She's brilliant and funny and kind and strong!
Brilliant Joy!!! Thank you
Can someone file a lawsuit against university's with legacy practices?
May I ask one Question: WHY, aren't the Supreme Court Voted into Their Position by the Public Voters, like all the other Branches of Government???? Just Asking.....
I 100% agree with Joy. I believe there is a deep-seeded rage and a "get-even" attitude. God only knows what took place from their upbringing, but something warped their minds against humanity. MAGA shares this thinking.
It's been there since the creation of the country, and them losing the civil war.
It's been part of their growth ever since, in education, how they present the civil war, how wronged they were, how the confederate officers are "heroes" etc.
Guess you're gonna have to up your real talent now and not use your skin color as a crutch.
Maga lolol go to bed
"I got(sic) mine. What's wrong with you?" This is rich BINO narcissism. Black in skin only.
It's an amazing Frontline. Great discussion Joy and Chris.
yeah. watched that a few months ago
I didn't know Reid was from Denver. Now I love her more!
