Four month tour with the RAF back in '95. Had a great time, the garrison was much bigger then. We had a civilian guy who was a resident working in our section. Erroll was his name, a keen runner and a great guy. I couldn't believe my eyes when watching the marathon during the Commonwealth games from Melbourne and the final runner to enter the stadium was Erroll representing St.Helena, he was quite a distance behind. But the reception he got from the crowd in the stadium was something else, a standing ovation, I was jumping around my Edinburgh living room like a madman. Go Erroll, I'm sure everyone back home were so proud of you.

@@theemperor6413 My career was pretty unremarkable to be honest. Probably the best 12 years of my life though. But I consider myself fortunate to have never been shot at nor fire a shot in anger. My final day in the RAF was the Friday before 9/11, as I sat watching the terrible events unfold I realised that many of my former comrades would soon be heading off to war. So I'll humbly accept your thanks on their behalf.

I went to school on Ascension Island and was there when the Falklands conflict started. I know that island like the back of my hand.I use to be a keen runner and would run 10 miles everyday. up green mountain or sisters peak or devil's ash pit wherever my legs took me it was such freedom. I use to work out at the military gym at donkey plain and met a lot of good ppl there also work for Fairclough the company that built the base at donkey plain for british military .I was last on the Island in 1994 with Belfour beauty building a radar station out near the airfield. my childhood on the Island was pure freedom just fishing diving and other carefree stuff. I live in New York city now mostly working and trading stocks to pay my huge rent.I watched this video and I realized I am trapped in a rat race and I dream of a a simpler time. How many of you have been to this little rock and miss it......good luck everybody and explore your world.

Thank you Kevin for bringing us this information in your post. Within the past 4 years, I have been following the airport development on St. Helena and will be traveling there for both business and pleasure. I know that it is a little difficult to get visiting permission for access to Ascension for someone like me, who never had any connection there. I would like to make a side trip sometime in the future when I start traveling to St. Helena. How do you suggest I go about doing that?

The beaches are beautiful and green sea turtles lay their eggs there. It brought back wonderful memories.

Stopped off there for one night in 1990 i think, on a stretched C130 on our way home from a UN tour of Namibia. We all got pissed up in the RAF bar, then were squeezed onto a standard C130 for the flight home the next day, including a refuel at Dakar in Senegal. I recently found out that my ex cub scout leader, Jonny Hobson was the dentist on the island, and long serving resident! I believe he became the first govt minister. Id love to go back and visit this amazing place. Tim

You can only swim from one beach, just below Green mountain, as the sea undertows will sweep you away very quickly. Two 4 inch guns taken off of HMS Hood during a 1938 refit, were placed just above the town. RAF flights are "dry". There used to be a bar at Ascension airport, until one RPT one berk got drunk and caused nause on the ongoing flight to the Falklands. Just because of him, they stopped all booze sales at Ascension.

@@WALTERBROADDUS I think it would be one of the first targets hit by a Soviet nuclear missile. Reason: Ascension had runways long and big enough to handle even B-52's by the late 1970's, and it would have been a major staging point for ASW planes looking for Soviet submarines in the Atlantic.
