Sappho the Ancient Greek poet, muse and claimed by some as the worlds first feminist, became a gay icon for women. Soon her birthplace, Lesbos, was adopted as a name for gay women all over the world.

I am Greek (not a Lesbian) and I can attest that when a Greek person says they are from Lesbos, immediately the jokes begin. We like to play with words and tease the Lesbians (people from Lesbos). That being said, the lgbtq community have not appropriated the term. I mean this confusion happened literally thousands of years ago and has nothing to do with the community itself. If I was Lesbian I would enjoy all the puns and the jokes you can make out of this situation. "My name is Paul and I'm a proud Lesbian!" or what the lady in the video said "I am a lesbian Lesbian!" Love it! If anything else, this is good publicity for the island and it helps people get to know Greek culture and, ultimately, where the word "lesbian" and "sapphic" came from.

Sapfo though is a reason to be proud as a Greek. Her poetry is so lyrical and beautiful and she had the ''guts'' in an ancient Greek society that most women were treated as men's objects who stayed home most of the time and got hardly any education to be the first feminist and found her own school teaching only girls

You can't change the term "lesbian" (meaning homossexual lady) on a global level... lots of other languages use the same "lesb" root.. (my language for example, "lésbica")
But if I was born in Lesbos, I would feel exactly the same as their citizens do.

In Greece we call ppl from island of lesvos mitilinios (males) and mitilinia (for females) since mitilini is the capital of the island. So there is no confusion of gay women with the inhabitants of lesvos.

  • @craftsmank
    @craftsmank 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I can understand why many of the inhabitants of Lesbos are unhappy with the association - the same way perhaps real feminists are.
So many women will have nothing to do with feminism - most of us have a sexual bent of one kind or another - but we dont advertise.

What I mean is that the people of Crete have a similar problem. The word cretin ( Oxford dictionary) has present meaning as a person afflicted with cretinism or a marked mental deficiency, & is also used in many European Languages as a pejorative, an insult meaning the same as a stupid person, idiot, JERK. I don't think it's fair that this word has has evolved to this meaning, there's a difference in spelling Cretan & Cretin so there's a distinction, but both are pronounced the same.

  • @leandrobayonito

    Well, it is confusing.
"Lesbians", whether male or female, refers to the residents or natives of Lesvos.
Not all Female Lesbians who are Lesvos residents act masculine.

I very much agree with the scholar, in the history, they said that the homosexual women took the name lesbian to represent themselves, it had no connotation to that meaning before they assumed it as such. The term lesbian only meant one who is from Lesbos. Also, I agree with the man who said that women should just be called homosexual, as are men, which suggests this problem might have leanings to women's need to show their independence of men.

I agree with you my friend. The word "cretin" is not derived form the word "cretan" which means the man from the island Crete. It 's a total different story. But the homosexual woman is called "lesbian", because Sappho is concidered to be the first homosexual woman in history and she was a Lesbian, which means she was from the island Lesbos. It's a different thing, please apologise to the Cretans

This is very, very, very language-specific... Yes, in English person from Lesbos and homosexual woman are both Lesbians, but in my language they are different: lesboslainen and lesbo. I guess many viewers here can say the same about their languages also. So this argument doesn't make so much sense to me, since not EVERYONE in the world will confuse these things!

I wonder how the maniacs will all feel when they realize Sappho was known to be married (to a man!) and less than 700 lines of her poetry still exist, with only one poem in its entirety. And none of them go beyond slight innuendo.
Oh. And she committed suicide because she was turned down by a man. Often ignored detail there, I would imagine.
Ancient Greece wasn't gay. Homosexuality was seen as perverse and animalistic and was practiced in its majority by a perverse sub-sect of the elite on teenaged minors.

I feel bad for the people of Lisbo, it is too bad this has happend and I can see where they are comming from. Unfortunatly it is too late to do much about it, Lisbian for a female homosexual has caught on and is part of at least the English Language if not more (ie Greek). There isn't much to be done about it, even if they were to win in court, people will go on using Lisbian to mean a gay female.
