Our Winter Day Trip to Pristine Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, British Columbia

  • In this video, Anne and I pile into the Ram 3500 and head out on a day trip to explore and do some photography in Strathcona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island, BC.
    We've camped and visited this jewel of a park before but never in the middle of winter. With a recent snowfall on the mountains and high water levels in the lake, we felt it would be pretty special. We picked a sunny, relatively warm day and were not disappointed.
    In the video, I show you some dashcam footage of the drive and video shots from our various stops, including a little forest hike to Lupin Falls. The video finishes off with my still shots from the day. In these trying times, it's so relaxing to get out and enjoy the sights and sounds of pure nature. I hope you enjoy the video. Cheers, Ray

    We do live in a special place. My wife and I often hit Strathcona even if its just for a picnic lunch. A little too busy in peak season for me so we push on to Gold River for camping in that case. My point however is this is less than 2 hours from my driveway. I am grateful. eh?

    • @LoveYourRV

      No, we are next to a rain forest with a coastal climate so in the winter tons of cloud, rain, and fog. Although during the summer months we actually get lots of sunshine and some months get to drought levels.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure is. :) That's because since starting making videos we have travel usually to the USA to avoid winter. I've spent my life in Canada so have already seen a fair bit of it over the years. We generally spend our summers on Vancouver Island for a few reasons. 1) It's one of the nicest places in Canada to summer at 2) Anne loves boating and during the summer wants to be using it 3) We have to spend at least 5 months in BC to maintain residency and medical coverage 4) It costs $300 dollars one way to take the ferry off the Island and camping ni Canada due the short season and high fuel costs is quite expensive. Actually, I've done quite a few videos from around Vancouver Island www.loveyourrv.com/tag/Vancouver-Island/ and recently did some from our 2011 Trip to the Maritimes - www.loveyourrv.com/tag/Throwback/ Cheers, Ray

    • @terryhaynes1596
      @terryhaynes1596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. Makes sense. Will watch the videos you added. I’ve been to Vancouver and it is beautiful. Id like to visit the area from Vancouver to Banff to Calgary. And eventually the Far Eastern Canada which you did show in your throw back videos.
      Put a small outboard motor on the rear bumper and attach some air skirts and you will have a house boat The best of both worlds. 🤗

    Have you ever gone to Kiwi falls? They are in Schoen Lake park but not the lake entrance. Find a map that show the south(I think) entrance. They are supposed to be measured at 460 meters but are best with spring melt, say March or April . If not 460 they are still very high.

    Ray, Love your channel and all that you do. But did you ever consider getting a drone? You are in some amazingly beautiful places.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Anne did get a small-sized one to play with a while back and has a few drone videos on her photography channel from some desert BLM land - th-cam.com/users/annemckinnellvideos But, I've seen she hardly gets to use it much, the problem is most of the cool places now don't allow drones, they annoy many people and wildlife and its too much hassle to try and figure out the air space rules or apply with authorities to fly. As an example here are the drone rules for the place this video was taken and other BC Parks - bcparks.ca/visiting/parks-and-drones/
      "Federal flight requirements for recreational use of drones and restrictions in the Park Act require distances from people, buildings, built-up areas, animals (both domestic and wildlife), and there are few, if any, locations in BC Parks where drones would legally be able to fly. To inquire further about drone use, you must contact us. It’s illegal to operate drones in BC’s provincial parks and protected areas without permission."
      My channel gets a fair amount of views so it would be easy to get busted flying in the wrong places. Cheers, Ray

      When find any places that are legit to fly will get some more footage. :) Anne's little DJ Mavic mini has an app that lets her know if its OK and its small enough that she doesn't need a drone pilot license. I actually like to hike up get to the cool perspective. Here is one from last winters trip south - th-cam.com/video/lYjmt__avho/w-d-xo.html Actually shows Anne playing with her new drone. :)

I am more of a review and mods guy but lately seeing the outdoors is therapy. The app sounds like a great thing to make the decision. Here in the States they are rolling out new rules, of course on the quick read it also sounds like eventually you need a new drone that can transmit an Identification number. i know my friend here in the states pretty much hung up his drone due to regulations. Was hoping things were a little less strict elsewhere. But we all know why there are rules. Here is the latest from your southern neighbor. www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?newsId=25541
