This is an amazing find, and even more amazing that it's finally been preserved online. Having footage of Michal Jackson at the peak of his popularity, in a videogame no less, is something special. Many thanks to everyone involved in making this happen! I agree, the full intro video for the simulator should be found, so this ride/game can be properly documented and experienced!
@@arkvinin Nirvana would probably disagree. They were big fans of Jackson and even wore t-shirts of him at some of their performances. They even spoke about the allegations when asked what they thought about it and Kurt said he felt sorry for Mike. Ironically the surviving members of Nirvana were also the target of a scam falsely claiming child abuse. The kid from the Nevermind cover tried to say that everyone who owned that album was in the possession of child pornography and that it had ruined his life. Graphics are on par for the time period. These would be the pre-rendered backgrounds. Sega CD could do that. (Silpheed is an example of this. Explosions, missles, and lasers would all be displayed over it.) The tech actually goes back to the Colecovision though the console never used it. ViewMaster Interactive was one of the first, displaying game data over video tape.
This is just done via prerendering/offline rendering. Not really that great considering what others did at the same time with that technology. However, ut does the job as a short ride movie that people forget 5 minutes after leaving.
Love this! MJ seems to work really well with things involving Space. Captain EO, Scramble Training, Space Channel 5, and the song Starlight. EDIT: I forgot about Men In Black 2. Although most of the Alien stuff takes place on Earth.
I rode this in Las Vegas at the Sega arcade in the Luxor. For some reason I don't remember Michael Jackson but I was young then and lots of stuff back then had mj in it. I remember we crashed the ship at the end. When the landing happens, there were guidelines for the riders to follow by hitting their triggers to adjust approach. 8 of us climbed into a lil moving pod, similar to Star Tours. I remember that crash landing really sticking with me.
Hello! Can you remember when this would have been? I'm currently trying to work out if the MJ version was actually replaced so this would be great to know
Thank you for uploading. I had seen photos of Michael Jackson in Scramble Training on Instagram years ago and wanted to watch the full video but I couldn’t find it then. I am so happy that I finally get to watch it.
I remember playing this back then in 1996, it blew my mind. MJ as a commander with a closed moving cockpit is awesome, although there's barely any gameplay except pushing green and red buttons on your unmoveable flight stick.
Mickael Jackson went to SEGA Odaiba center in Tokyo Japan in 1996. I know it because there is an autograph of him there dated 1996. I still have a photo of me and my friend in front of that.
I came across this video through its mention in a book dedicated to Michael Jackson's collaboration with Sega. Thank you very much for preserving this audiovisual document.
"That was close"... 🤣🤣🤣 LoooL No Michael, that was "shit". This is so awesome. Thank you so much for your effort in digitalizing this, for us fans. You're great!
Yep Michael Jackson baby! From what I was reading I think they shot filmed it in end of 1992 but Sega did t finish editing or put out the video until early 1993.
I love this so, so much. When he said good job and gave the thumbs up my heart melted 🥲❤️ he is so awesome I bet it was always his dream to be featured in a video game
what a wild find! I'd heard about these motion sims from videos on the old arcades, but I didn't know MJ was involved! Pretty awesome for what it is. Shame this isn't his best acting though lol
So the footage was found in the UK in a car boot sale. However I bet Sega already has this, who said that Sega lost it and didn't have it themselves? Sega themselves never claimed this, it was only kids online on reddit and such that claimed this, companies don't just release random stuff like this often, so they likely still have it themselves.
Thank you very much for dusting off this historical document. Hopefully the master footage from "Megalopolis - Tokyo City Battle" will also be recovered.
I rode this at the Trocadero in the 90s. Just for context, from 7:46 to 8:12 the cabinet would switch to a wireframe view of the ship rendered at runtime. The designated driver would then pilot the ship, I think through a number of rings or gates. I can't remember if the players actions would actually drive the motion simulation too or not though. On my ride, we got ending 1 at 8:10. - We also rode the non-interactive 'Megalopolis' film.

I completely forgot about this. I went on the arcade machine with my school at Sega World in London. I remember thinking why was Michael being so serious. 😂
Gaming history is wild. Love the music, kind of reminds me of the exciting music in Star Wars Episode 1. Combat looks heavily informed by Star Wars as well. Looks like fun.
This is so cool. I like the game that MJ created. It gives me the Captain EO vibe and Millennium Falcon and Star Tours at Disney. The outfit seems familiar in this one. I've probably seen it except that it must've been added.
Now all we need is the full Megalopolis: Tokyo City Battle ride. I've only ever seen snippets and heard only one audio sample when the game was featured in a japanese Sega documentary.
This was a pack in demo for the cancelled Sega Giga Edge. It also came with a signed copy of authenticity by Micheal Jackson. If you returned the slip to Sega's headquarters and were one of the first ten people to do so Micheal Jackson would come over to your house and play Sega branded video games with you for the evening. He was even gonna bring a trailer full of the current Sega arcade titles for you to play like Virtua Racing. Too bad this system was cancelled at the last minute because of infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. Instead we got the 32x add on a year later.
I went on this a many times in Trocadero London SEGA World near where I lived as a kid. That place was the reason I love video games today. If you are a SEGA fan and you havent seen pictures of the what the place was like I would highly suggest you do. It was the closest thing we ever got to having a SEGA theme park. It was 7 floors of Arcade games, they had every sega arcade cab probably. Then on the bottom floor was a live action ALIENS experience based on the movie by James Cameron.
