    I have those rollers and just a speed sensor for zwift and it still works, you don’t need a cadence sensor so if you want to cut cost down a little more then just buy speed sensor.
    Great vid

      You kinda need to know your cadence for the training plans on Zwift. I did the 6wk FTP builder and the intervals are very specific for power AND cadence. Tells you to spin faster if you lose focus and drop below the required RPM. I bought my wahoo cadence sensor for about £30 when I only had a dumb trainer but since upgrading to a smart trainer I obvs don't use it so probs easy to pick one up used on eBay from others like myself.

      @@eleanorbox1954 very true but I only meant this reply as an extreme budget version. I’m not a serious zwift user, I just use it as a slightly more interesting thing than just spinning the legs.

    I did Zwift on rollers for the first couple of months until I got the Zwift hub. First time I tried it, I steered round the bend on the screen….did not end well! That horrible moment you know you are going to crash as the wheels left the side of the rollers, then I ended up upside down under the bike on the kitchen floor, having taken my (self made) stand for the laptop and the laptop down with me. Luckily no damage to equipment or self!
    Always seemed to be at least one heart-stopping moment per session but agree that it feels more like real bike riding.
    Rollers can be harder work because you cannot coast - you stop peddling, you stop (and fall over unless you put you feet down or reach for the wall!)
    Am enjoying the Zwift hub, much easier but can’t seem to stop myself pushing way harder than intended!

    Dave. Great video! You must have read my mind. This is exactly what I was planning on doing. I’ve just bought a set of rollers and am waiting for the speed and cadence sensors to be delivered so I can set my daughter and I up on Zwift. As you mentioned, a video on using rollers would be very helpful as we are new to this but don’t have contact with anyone who can give us advice on how best to use them. Cheers!

    Enjoyed the blooper reel, love the paincave and the options to decorate it. I have some envy, could be decorated to function as a studio space too. I would fix up mounting points for a hammock as a thinking area and a pulley system so I could dry camping kit out of the way for the inevitable time in the future when we can get out to do things like camping again and it will be raining anyway

    I've never used a "smart trainer" nor Zwift etc. but since switching from 'dum'b' turbo trainer to Kreitler rollers (with the smallest drums) I've never got back on a turbo. Not sure why you need a speed sensor (who cares about speed?) while knowing your cadence and feeling your effort is all i think matters for indoor training. What make are those cadence sensors? Also, no clue what watts you need to hold riding Kreitler small drums in a 53/11, I can't hold it for long. Apart from top-end sprinting I'd go for rollers over a turbo everytime. Turbo training is weight training for your legs - not cycling.

  • @steelisreal
    @steelisreal 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This was my set up when I started on Zwift, even now I do all my indoor training on rollers. Agree that it’s not great for hard efforts, although my hard efforts are probably a lot lower wattage, but I’ve found I can still get some sprints etc. in. It’s actually simulating climbs that’s the hardest, and they’re rubbish for racing.

    • @DaveNoakes
      @DaveNoakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 100%, I really enjoy rollers but don’t think I could use them all the time. I want to get back into Zwift racing so I think a new smart trainer is in order.

    • @steelisreal
      @steelisreal 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DaveNoakes Should have said, I have rollers with resistance levels, which makes hitting 5-7 w/kg for my threshold/VO2Max stuff easier (I'm 67kg so we're talking less than 500w). The lack of resistance feedback makes racing terrible, it's a constant fight to catch back on as you hammer through the gears to match the gradient and getting out the saddle to sprint/climb compared to doing it on a turbo is really limiting. I reckon they might be good for a TT though.

    i was just about the ask what the advantages of rollers were vs a dumb trainer but you pretty much covered it so thanks for going into that as a second hand dumb trainer is around the same as some rollers.. i guess an advantage of rollers could also be less noise in the house/garage. Great that you setup next to a wall to to aid in getting going and getting off. thanks for another great vid

    So what happens if you attach the speed sensor to the skateboard? For those that can swing the up front cost, the Elite Suito is still the best deal going for smart trainers. I have over a year on mine now with no hardware issues and saving monthly gym fees has already paid for it. It comes with an 11 speed cassette installed and a front wheel block, so good to go right out of the box. Either way, your bike cave looks fairly Zombie proof which is probably best while we try to get through another year of everything trying to kill us.

    Can we put the speed sensor on the other pedal because the spinning bikes in gyms are not like regular bike.

    • @DaveNoakes
      @DaveNoakes  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hiya, sorry for the late reply. Do you mean the cadence sensor?
      I’m using 2 sensors
      1. On the either pedal to measure cadence (Cadence Sensor)
      2. One on the hub to measure speed (Speed Sensor)
      I don’t think you could put a speed sensor on a gym bike as there’s no actual front wheel.

    I tried exactly this using the same rollers but Garmin speed and cadence sensors, on my wifes singlespeed. All connected OK but just wouldn't go above a few kph in Zwift on the flat, even though I was at 90 rpm which equates to ~30kph in the real world. On steep hills I was getting overtaken by joggers, and sometimes the avatar even got off and stood still! I gave up in the end and just have the telly on now.

    • @DaveNoakes
      @DaveNoakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great video! Please forgive me if this is an ignorant questions (I’ve never used Zwift): 1. Are you limited in the courses you can ride in Zwift with this set up? 2. If there are hills on the course on Zwift, do you need to pedal faster to maintain your pace on Zwift to generate the higher power output (I think you covered this in the video a bit, just want to check I understood)? Cheers! Keep up the great content!

    • @DaveNoakes
      @DaveNoakes  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks.
      1. You can ride the same courses as with a smart trainer.
      2. Whether you are going up hill or on flat the pedalling power is the same. You’ll go slower up hills you just don’t get that resistance a smart trainer gives.

      If they're Bluetooth you can use them directly. If they're ANT+ (most likely for older devices) you can use them with an ANT+ USB stick with a laptop (around $20/£20 from amazon), but for iOS, Apple TV and most Android phones you'll need something like the NPE CABLE device, which is about the same cost as buying new dual Bluetooth+ANT+ speed/cadence sensors.
