    In Europe it is totally different from this. We use a soldering iron to solder gutters, funny to see this from an other country. Thank you👍

      We use irons in the States. It's very slow even with a propane-iron. Usually acetylene because of the fine tip. I use the map gas on gutter because the tank is lighter.

      This guy should never use open flame soldering. It is wrong. Irons only!

      @@DavidOliveira-gy2dg Why? What does the iron do that the torch won't?

      More bullcrap. I will run circles around that. The soldering iron in the hands of a craftsman is just as fast if not faster especially on a table. Open flame burns the tin in the solder.

      @@erikfernandez2462 The torch is too hot, it can warp the metal and create problems. With an iron, you can more easily control the heat.

    100th like! I was wondering if copper gutter can be soldered with propane or mapp. Now I know. Thanks! 🔥👍

      Plumbing has to be watertight and they use map gas. I don't know of any that use an iron? I'm curious why not:)

      Just remember bring the solder to the heat not the heat to the solder and you'll be okay. Never fake solder by using your flame or iron to melt the solder. Heat the area and follow behind with the soldering, if it's hot enough and fluxed it'll stick

      @@Tools_Tips_How-to I can answer that :). It's because the heat has to be evenly distributed around the pipe fitting to get a good solder joint. Even if using an iron would work (I've never tried it), doing so would be inefficient. Just heat the pipe fitting directly. That wouldn't work with sheet copper, as you pointed out would cause the material to buckle.

      Work clean, no oils from your hands and keeps siding,dormers, gutters and everything else you touch clean.

    I just had a copper gutter with two downspouts installed on our garage. The contractor mentioned having to solder the joints. But I see they just only riveted. No solder. Is this sufficient? Or an incomplete job? Thanks

    • @Tools_Tips_How-to
      @Tools_Tips_How-to  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You looked inside the gutter and found no solder? Copper is a 50yr investment, until they come out with a 50yr sealant lead is the only suitable way.

    • @Tools_Tips_How-to
      @Tools_Tips_How-to  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I assume they are not done the job yet. Put 2 tennis balls in the gutter and fill it with water. If it doesn't leak it's sealed. People are going to hate that suggestion.

      @@Tools_Tips_How-to Thanks alot for the reply. I did call the contractor and he said he'd be back that he forgot his flux. So he did come back (a couple weeks later) and soldered the two downspout outlets inside the gutter. I like the tennis ball idea. Might have to test it.😉
      Thanks again for your help!

    Doesn’t the lead leech into the ground with rain?

    • @Tools_Tips_How-to
      @Tools_Tips_How-to  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope it's stuck to the copper.

    • @larrycrookshanks1646
      @larrycrookshanks1646 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's bullcrap.! The lead solder will continually erode over time. The constant rain water drips off the roof and the water running in the gutter will eventually wear it off.

      How much time I wonder?. I watched a show about salvagers claiming 75+yr old lead ingots & they didn't look bad. I guess salt water preserved them like beekjerky.

      As a gutter contractor in Central Texas, most of us have changed to lead free solder. Many of us just for water collection reasons many just to be environmentally friendly. We use gas fired irons opposed to torch, feel that's more of sweat technique used by plumbers.

    • @jmfishing5733

      Acetylene tank I use for flat seam roofs and built-in gutters, But exterior gutters map gas it's not worth dragging the tank around. In 6-12 months all the copper turns brown.
