Yes and No. She was born and raised in East Germany (Halle or Saale) and did work for Rundfunk der DDR and its radio station DT64 which is now today Sputnik and now under the operation of MDR or Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk which is the regional public media broadcaster in Thuringia, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt and headquartered in the city of Leipzig which is in the state of Saxony and a member of the ARD. Susanne decided to defect from East Germany after Stasi (East Germany's Minstry of State Security) failed to recruit her. She exiled to Hungary and Yugoslavia and would work for Radio Free Berlin as a news and program spokesperson. Up to this point Susanne worked on the radio side, and Brandenburg Aktuell originally produced by Ostdeutscher Rundfunk Brandenburg aka ORB (and was the other newest eastern regional public broadcaster after reunification to join the formed and part of the ARD) was her first TV anchor job. She would return to Radio Free Berlin in the late 1990's before heading up to ARD-aktuell and NDR in Hamburg to become one the main anchors on Das Erste's long running news program Tagsschau in 1999. ORB would later merge with Sender Freies Berlin (SFB) to become Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg aka RBB. Brandenburg aktuell however is still produced for the Brandenburg region while Abendchau is still produced for Berlin.
