  • 4l60E problems... go figure.
    Hopped in the truck, fired it up, shifted into gear and it won't move in any gear. Starting the process of figuring out what's wrong.
    In all seriousness, I've had good luck with 4L60E transmissions in my day. This is the 4th one I've had in various vehicles and this is the only one that has ever given me any problems (knock of wood). Of course this one I bought used and previously "rebuilt."

    My bet is that chunk is part of the pump assembly. I had a similar experience in my camaro with a 700R4. Pump rotor blew up at a red light in rush hour traffic 60 miles from home... I know how to rebuild 4L60/700R4 pumps now as a result. Good luck! Thanks for the update

    I feel your pain. 4L60's just don't hold up. I just usually grab spares from Pull a Part for about $150 whenever I get a chance. I know it's a pain to swap. But a lot cheaper than rebuilding them. Looking forward to more videos on the truck.

    I have a 98 Suburban 4wd and it won't move in drive or reverse but rolls fine in neutral with the driveshaft still connected. I'm stumped. Should I remove the transfer case driveshaft and see if it moves in gear?

  • @robertemmons2260
    @robertemmons2260 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had watched your first drive video and was excited to see your '70 on the road. I too had started to worry when I was listening to the engine speed revving when on the drive. I hope that the transmission issue wasn't a serious problem. I'll look out for your update video to see what had happened.
    I have a '68 that I'm wanting to drop in my LM7 5.3 with a 4L60E out of my '01 Suburban. The Burb is still running and driven so I know what condition that it's in. Of course I'll have to do a 2WD tailshaft and tail conversion, but I'm wanting to replace the clutch packs and other potentially weak parts while I'm in there.
    My 15 yo daughter wants to drive my truck, it's her favorite pickup, but she has to learn how to do fluid checks, tire changes, and basic troubleshooting before I will allow her to drive it to school when she turns 16 this summer.

    When you were removing the transmission, was the difficulty just the angle? If that's the case why not lift the rear and put it on jack stands? That'll give you more clearance. Just a thought.

    • @paulkc10
      @paulkc10  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The difficulty was just the overall height. Tight quarters. Heavy and awkward. Angle really didn’t make a difference

  • @deankay4434

    There is nothing wrong with well built 4L60e. Cooling is complex but works fine, pump develops pressure, TV modulates line pressure, 8-10 PSI leave torque converter and leaves for cooler. The return, passes thru center shaft for cooler fluid but mainly to lube gears, bushings, bearings, etc. That chunk is aluminum, it is most likely is input housing broke as 3rd clutch got hot, twisted, grew larger and broke ring land by selective plate. This is symptom not reason. Check captured check balls no one like to replace. If badly worn, ball drops out, line pressure goes sky high to correct, but big leak. Change pin type accumulator to pinless (Alu. Chunk) but 3rd accumulator ball maybe gone. Books say remove with East out #4. Used tap, 5/16” - 18 and comes right out. Last is 3rd pressure release at back of case, driver side dump when out of 3rd. It dumps into case and many times gone.
    The main with many builders is, they put Corvette apply piston when 3rd, 2-4 should be “Superior Super Hold billet.” Only Sonnax comes close. But still, many throw Corvette piston, Raybestos-Z Pack and call it a day after drill separator plate, counting balls in VB. Tossing 2 or 3 away, no large 0.50” pump regulator and never check captured with 50/50 mix of ATF & Solvent. Nor input drum relief and never punch to stake ball.
    Use Aalto Red Eagle with Kolene plates. I fitted 9 plates in 3rd with 0.28” to spare. Yes, it use the bat-wings also. Some hate them, but hydraulic viscous drag is there. Dragging the 3rd friction around. Being a ACDelco guy, I put GM 5 gear pinions front & rear. Sonnax type reaction sun shell and all new Torrington bearings. I can handle 600 horse pony’s all day. But not the engine I built for me and daily driving. Yes, short beds look nice, had one 65 Apache at 13. It’s gone so, if I need drywall or could afford plywood, I can still shut the tailgate. Best of luck. So your builder.

    When I pull/install a tranny, I use straps (ratchet or friction) crossing the frame rails to hold the tranny up, then slowly loosen the straps down onto a car dolly. Install the same way by tightening straps as it goes up in there. Makes a normal nightmare job pretty easy peasy. I'm a scrawny little f*cker too, and I can even do big heavy ones this way.
