Hey @Tyler Mowery, I know you might not see this but I wondered if you could do a video about TEOTFW and Wayne I recently finished TEOTFW and started watching Wayne and they feel both similar in writing and everything, although imo, TEOTFW has better writing. Was just wondering if you you could do a video about it And what Wayne is doing wrong that TEOTFW does right
i thought the voiceover was great. in episode one when they crash the car, james says “what do you want to do?” and alyssa thinks to herself, “go home,” but when james brings up the idea, she says “i don’t want to go home, james.” but by episode 7, when they’re about to meet alyssa’s father, she thinks to herself “i’m really scared,” and then a few seconds later, she says out loud, “i’m really scared,” and we can see that she now feels more comfortable being vulnerable. without the narration of their thoughts it would have been much more difficult to convey thier character development.
I like the narration and that is a great detail to point out but doesn't she still maintain the inner voice throughout the series. I believe they might have thought it weird to abandon it altogether or because of the fact they are considered young adults/kids their nervousness needs to be shown through the voice-over because of their personality
I’ve always loved TEOTFW, I mean a psychopath that ends up falling in love? what a brilliant concept. Jonathan Entwistle is one of my favorite directors now because aside from writing, the direction of the actors seem awkward on purpose and it works, and the excessive tripod, dolly shots and carefully picked and help portray the characters thoughts even though there’s VO’s. And I don’t really see the excessive VO as a crutch, but more as a stylistic choice. Beautiful series, I really hope they make a season 3.
Steezy has good taste. He even likes Jonathan Entwhistle. But an s3 is not necessary and will not be made. The story is finished. And absolutely the VO's really added depth to the story. Interesting to read your take on this show.

This show is structured better than most movies. It's absolutely phenomenal and so good at portraying trauma and mental illness in a realistic and relatable way. The way they use visuals like the character's appearances, hair and wardrobe shifts to shape how you perceive their intentions in the series, the way we get to wholly understand their thoughts while still letting the visuals speak for themselves. It's just so well done.
I don't think that voiceover narration is a negative but rather a positive point, I mean, there is a reason that it exists and it's a whole another topic that it is often used erroneously. Here we have emotionally repressed characters which is precisely when you should use the voiceover - when the character cannot or will not express themselves. Apocalypse Now is probably the most famous example of this being done right and in this show it also felt right.
For screenwriting, you generally don't want to do voiceovers because you want to show with actions and not tell. That kind of narration is usually best served for books, when we are directly in the character's mind.

What I love about season 2 is they flip the role. Alyssa is now the one repressing her emotions about the trauma she experienced and James is reconciling his emotions over the fact the girl he risked his life for might not love him anymore. Not to mention how tense the second season is with the antagonist whose end goal leaves the audience with a tense slow burner of suspense.
not gonna lie, teotfw's use of v.o. is honest to god my fav use of v.o. i've seen in any film/television. it adds to it so much in such a brilliant way i can't explain. this is one of my all time fav shows.
I've probably watched the first season well over 5 times, but it never registered that the people they were encountering (the driver who let them hitchhike, Clive) were meant to be clarifying for what actual psychopaths look like. Of course it was obvious their behavior was bad, and it made me feel there was something in them worse than James. Regardless of my lack of realization, the show and those scenes certainly made me feel something. Excellent storytelling indeed.
Also, in the second season when Bonnie accidentally kills the motel owner, she realizes how different taking a life actually is compared to how she imagined it to be. Kinda goes over the same feeling James did when he killed Clive. She tried to stay emotionless, but deep down she felt horrible for doing it. At the end, I think it helped her give up the intention of killing James and Alyssa, as she had now went trough a similiar path and is capable to understand why Clive was killed. At that point, the horrible repressed feeling got expressed and she couldn't handle it, thus trying to take her own life. Thats what I made of it atleast, Bonnie and James had a lot in common.
honestly why did James hate his dad? he was slightly annoying but he wasn't a terrible guy. Well in Season 2 I think his love for His father started to show although it was too late. Low key James' dad reminds me of Mr. Peanutbutter from Bojack Horseman.
I think James could have loved his mother more and knew his father couldn't fill the void she left. It's probable James resented that his father was the one who survived and was annoyed his dad tried to act as though everything was alright. I don't think his dad was awful, but maybe him trying to be happy-go-lucky in front of James was also a way of trying to cope with James' mother's loss. Neither of them ever grieved properly. It's also possible that by trying to be "strong" for James, James' father also showed him that he shouldn't grieve or show emotion toward situations that most people would expect you to react to. Again, not a terrible person, but I don't think his father ever provided the sort of emotional support that James needed.
I thought the bit when when Alyssa said "sometimes I need to just lie down because everythings a bit too much for me" and when James talked about his mother and described her as "I think everything was just all a bit too much for her" was kind of symbolizing how he had picked someone that reminded him of his mother even tho their personalities seem completely different
I’ve never seen an analysis of the show before, and this makes so much sense. I had binged-watched it with my family, and looking back I can see how the pilot drew us in with that cool sense of repression. James is distant and collected and he makes you feel cool too and that you’re in on it with him. And as we continued with each episode, we also fell alongside James further into genuine feeling of love and care for the world they lived in. Over the years I’ve found myself more grounded and secure in my belief of expression, and I just realised that this explains why I find it to difficult to enjoy the first few episodes the same way I did the first time. I just can’t place myself in that headspace anymore when I watch it.
Absolutely love this show. I think additionally there's something with the aesthetic that resonates with an English/British audience. You can relate to it, and the kind of 90's aesthetics is what everyone grew up with in the UK. From the cars, dodgy local pub you got dragged to when you were little, the housing estates, industrial estates, motorways, beach scenery, or even the greasy spoon cafe, it's just an accurate portrayel of what you remember growing up in the UK. Even sleeping in a field or going to a shit holiday home on the beach is a classic memory of all UK teens. Just makes it alot more relatable and grounded/realistic than the cliche film interpretation that normally has the classic "posh" private school actors and is based in London or a historical background. While the reality of the UK is every teen has imagined running away from their sh*t hole town and never coming back
I agree with this so much. I find it hard to watch American media sometimes because of how different they are aesthetically to British shows. I connect a lot more with the characters too.
@@satapon4129 honestly thats it. Alot of Hollywood films have us brits depicted as either the cliche super posh, or the more modern super rough London "roadman" asthetic. Think shows like TEOTFW or the Inbetweeners are more accurate. TEOTFW even got the dry humour and swearing down to a tea. If you havnt already efinetly watch the Inbetweeners (not the US remake) aswell.

@@satapon4129 few other kind of programmes that might be worth a go for you if you havnt watched them already. Afterlife (a rocky Gervais show and honestly phenomonal), derry girls or sex education. Not quite on par with TEOTFW but I havnt watched much that is. I genuinly binge watched the entire first season when I stumbled across it years ago. Than had forgot about it and had the pleasure to repeat the entire experience with both the first and second season last year. Hope you enjoy!
Yeah agreed. It wasn't my favorite story, but wow that directing and storytelling kept me hooked. The inner dialogue is the best I've seen, even surpassing the previous best I'd seen, Dexter.
If there is one issue I have with the show, is that towards the end of the first season, the two cops that are closing in on James have a debate on what type of actions must be taken to deter criminals. One belives in punishment while the other belives in rehabilitation. After the season 1 finale, these two are completely thrown away and never spoken of again
i mean, couldn't bonnie's whole story be classified as rehabilitation? she has finally realized what she did was wrong, and why, and will hopefully now go towards a road of recovery
The events in this show literally happened to me after I watched it, it’s scary. I watched this show when I was 16 and I related to it so much. I had a guy best friend who was interested in me and it inspired me to fall in love with him, seeing how freeing the characters love was to their horrible home lives. The guy I fell in love with recently got shot and died, which is horrifying foreshadowing. This show will always hold an incredibly special place in my heart, seeing as I wanted the type of love they had and I got exactly that in the end, death and all. (Also fuck season 2 it ruins the canon)
After watching some minutes of this video, I accidentally realised that the plot somehow is similiar to Crime and Punishment. The main characters have the belief that they want to prove after killing a human being. Both Rodion and James look for a victim to do it. And in the end they both understand their beliefs prove wrong.
I don't think Raskólnikov wanted to kill out of feeling like a psychopath. Though even he doesn't know for sure why he did it, his circumstances were extremely intricate, to the point he felt he had no other choice. And I believe guilt played a much, much larger part in Crime and Punishment than it did in this. I do think, though, that both works take a somewhat similar psychological approach.
I think the voice-overs where one of the best parts of the show. This is how other shows should convey thoughts! Often with books there is a lot said in thoughts that is than cut out of the adaptation but this show showed that that does not need to happen when done well.
Books need to convey thoughts through explanation as there’s no visuals. From a writing perspective in shows, simply telling the audience something is lazier than showing what characters are thinking visually. With that being said I enjoy the narration in this show.
One of the best shows I have ever seen, S1 was gripping from beginning to end and S2 was the closing the viewers and the characters needed. 10 out of 10
While watching this video, I also realized that Alyssa wears a bold red color in the pilot to represent expression and emotion, also a color that pops on screen, whereas James wears black to represent repression. But, in the finale, James is also wearing red (which pops on screen as he runs on the shore), showing that he’s started feeling.
James outfit also conveys his internal change from a much more conservative and formal clothing, showing very little emotion to a vibrant outfit that shows his mental shift to express his emotions
I definitely feel that sentiment, but I don't think season 2 was bad. It definitely had fewer moments where the audience was led to feel intense anticipation/excitement, but displaying the process of how people may grieve (or avoid grieving) with trauma and loss is something I think S2 did very well. To me, it felt more "mundane" than S1, but not necessarily less emotionally-charged.
I didnt like it until i realized season two respresent the fallout and the growing up that happens after a traumatic event. It kind of mirrors season one where james is the more outgoing one trying to bring back the fun they had and alyssa is the reserved one. The more times i watched it the more i liked it

I mean they had me at the first line from james at the opening "I'm James, i am 17 years old, and I'm pretry sure i'm a psychopath"! Plus the acting, cinematography & MUSIC ❤️ My peak fav moments from S1 are, "I was never Alyssa's protector, she was mine" and the monolgue Alyssa gives to her dad at the end ✌️ This is one of those shows i never wanna forget during my whole existence 💀
The show can still be active, but with different arcs. I love how intertwined the characters are in the fucked up world they live in. A quote that resonated with me out of the entire show was “The problem with a person with a lack of love is that they don't know what it looks like. So it's easy for them to get tricked, to see things that aren't there. But then I guess we all lie to ourselves all the time.” From the perspective of someone who has a fruitful and a positive environment’ll never fully comprehend the pain that quote carries to those to personally connects with it.
Imo, all this series is saying "You're not a psychopath, you're just an edgy and cringe boy during puberty who fells in love in your first intimate interaction with a woman"
@@lljw7151 i mean he wasn't a *legit* psychopath because psychopathy isn't just something you can grow out of. by the end of season one and even more so in season two, james is a very, very emotional person, meaning he never truly was a psychopath, he just suppressed his emotions as a response to trauma
0:30 i sometimes forget that killing alyssa was the whole point at first, because they go so quickly from "i'm going to kill you and you have no idea" to "we're in love and also on the run from the law"
I was impressed with Alex Lawther after watching an episode of Black Mirror. I’m glad he got to be the lead of this show because he’s such a great actor. Season 2 may have been good if it were it’s own show.
I found this show just a few weeks before season 2 released, and I got so hooked. This is one of my favorite short shows ever, both seasons had me emotionally hooked and I was so invested in the characters.

I don't know how to feel about the show after something similar happened in my country: there was a friend group (2 girls, 1 boy), one of the girls started asking herself if she was a psychopath and plotted with the help of the boy in the group to murder their friend to see if she would feel something, therefore "proving" she really was a psycho. They killed the other young girl with a knife, turns out, they panicked, she wasn't a psychopath. Kids are really something, huh. I'm Brazilian btw.

I'm rewatching the show because I got a book idea for something similar and I just noticed that after the introduction, all of James' s1 narrations are in past tense while Alyssa always talks in present tense. Thought that was an interesting choice but I have no clue why. Edit: I just figured out, he is supposed to be narrating all of that during his run in the last episode because he switches to present tense at the very end while he is running "I just turned 18, and I think I understand what people mean to each other."
I watched this show in the wrong order accidentally. I watched the last episode, then the 2nd, and onward, before watching the pilot when I realized I had already watched the last episode. Watching the end and then going back to the beginning was actually a cool way to watch, and not knowing the plan that was decided in the pilot until the end was not that big of a surprise but I liked it nonetheless. Idk what it feels like to watch it the right way but the way I watched it I really enjoyed

If he loved his dad he’d have to deal with the fact that he could loose him like he lost his mother. His “hatred” was part of his repression.
He represented everything James hated. And as he put it “he’s alive and my mum isn’t” or something like that.
i think he *thought* he hated his dad, because that's what him wanting/believing to be a psychopath led him to believe.

@@satapon4129 honestly thats it. Alot of Hollywood films have us brits depicted as either the cliche super posh, or the more modern super rough London "roadman" asthetic. Think shows like TEOTFW or the Inbetweeners are more accurate. TEOTFW even got the dry humour and swearing down to a tea. If you havnt already efinetly watch the Inbetweeners (not the US remake) aswell.
@@dontworry171 I was just telling my American friends about Inbetweeners now, I love it lol XD I haven't watched this yet, mainly because I assumed it was American when it first came out, definitely going to watch it now! I really love stuff that feels real, it's a shame there's not more of it.
@@satapon4129 few other kind of programmes that might be worth a go for you if you havnt watched them already. Afterlife (a rocky Gervais show and honestly phenomonal), derry girls or sex education. Not quite on par with TEOTFW but I havnt watched much that is. I genuinly binge watched the entire first season when I stumbled across it years ago. Than had forgot about it and had the pleasure to repeat the entire experience with both the first and second season last year. Hope you enjoy!

Yeah agreed. It wasn't my favorite story, but wow that directing and storytelling kept me hooked. The inner dialogue is the best I've seen, even surpassing the previous best I'd seen, Dexter.

this show absolutely does not get the love it deserves, it is so so well made
If there is one issue I have with the show, is that towards the end of the first season, the two cops that are closing in on James have a debate on what type of actions must be taken to deter criminals. One belives in punishment while the other belives in rehabilitation. After the season 1 finale, these two are completely thrown away and never spoken of again
Season 1 is based off a book and season 2 was added, so season 2 wasn’t based off anything so I guess the writers just forgot lol
i mean, couldn't bonnie's whole story be classified as rehabilitation? she has finally realized what she did was wrong, and why, and will hopefully now go towards a road of recovery

The events in this show literally happened to me after I watched it, it’s scary. I watched this show when I was 16 and I related to it so much. I had a guy best friend who was interested in me and it inspired me to fall in love with him, seeing how freeing the characters love was to their horrible home lives. The guy I fell in love with recently got shot and died, which is horrifying foreshadowing. This show will always hold an incredibly special place in my heart, seeing as I wanted the type of love they had and I got exactly that in the end, death and all. (Also fuck season 2 it ruins the canon)

i just got done watching this show and it was amazing. i dont think i will ever find a show that will make me feel the way this show made me feel.
After watching some minutes of this video, I accidentally realised that the plot somehow is similiar to Crime and Punishment. The main characters have the belief that they want to prove after killing a human being. Both Rodion and James look for a victim to do it. And in the end they both understand their beliefs prove wrong.
I don't think Raskólnikov wanted to kill out of feeling like a psychopath. Though even he doesn't know for sure why he did it, his circumstances were extremely intricate, to the point he felt he had no other choice. And I believe guilt played a much, much larger part in Crime and Punishment than it did in this. I do think, though, that both works take a somewhat similar psychological approach.
This show has the ONLY series finale I have watched that I thoroughly felt satisfied with.

I think the voice-overs where one of the best parts of the show. This is how other shows should convey thoughts! Often with books there is a lot said in thoughts that is than cut out of the adaptation but this show showed that that does not need to happen when done well.
Books need to convey thoughts through explanation as there’s no visuals. From a writing perspective in shows, simply telling the audience something is lazier than showing what characters are thinking visually. With that being said I enjoy the narration in this show.

One of the best shows I have ever seen, S1 was gripping from beginning to end and S2 was the closing the viewers and the characters needed. 10 out of 10

season two helped me get over this show because it delivered amazing closure
While watching this video, I also realized that Alyssa wears a bold red color in the pilot to represent expression and emotion, also a color that pops on screen, whereas James wears black to represent repression. But, in the finale, James is also wearing red (which pops on screen as he runs on the shore), showing that he’s started feeling.
James outfit also conveys his internal change from a much more conservative and formal clothing, showing very little emotion to a vibrant outfit that shows his mental shift to express his emotions

i was honestly disappointed by season 2, the first was just such a masterpiece and had such a good ending that seemed more planned out than s2
I definitely feel that sentiment, but I don't think season 2 was bad. It definitely had fewer moments where the audience was led to feel intense anticipation/excitement, but displaying the process of how people may grieve (or avoid grieving) with trauma and loss is something I think S2 did very well. To me, it felt more "mundane" than S1, but not necessarily less emotionally-charged.
i agree, disappointed might've been too strong of a word because i was happy to get more TEOTFW. they did do a good job with season two as well :)
I didnt like it until i realized season two respresent the fallout and the growing up that happens after a traumatic event. It kind of mirrors season one where james is the more outgoing one trying to bring back the fun they had and alyssa is the reserved one. The more times i watched it the more i liked it

Probably my favorite tv series oat. Absolute genius and it’s also really short, you could watch it all in a day if you wanted.
The show can still be active, but with different arcs. I love how intertwined the characters are in the fucked up world they live in. A quote that resonated with me out of the entire show was “The problem with a person with a lack of love is that they don't know what it looks like. So it's easy for them to get tricked, to see things that aren't there. But then I guess we all lie to ourselves all the time.” From the perspective of someone who has a fruitful and a positive environment’ll never fully comprehend the pain that quote carries to those to personally connects with it.
Imo, all this series is saying "You're not a psychopath, you're just an edgy and cringe boy during puberty who fells in love in your first intimate interaction with a woman"

@@lljw7151 i mean he wasn't a *legit* psychopath because psychopathy isn't just something you can grow out of. by the end of season one and even more so in season two, james is a very, very emotional person, meaning he never truly was a psychopath, he just suppressed his emotions as a response to trauma

I was impressed with Alex Lawther after watching an episode of Black Mirror. I’m glad he got to be the lead of this show because he’s such a great actor. Season 2 may have been good if it were it’s own show.
I found this show just a few weeks before season 2 released, and I got so hooked. This is one of my favorite short shows ever, both seasons had me emotionally hooked and I was so invested in the characters.

I don't know how to feel about the show after something similar happened in my country: there was a friend group (2 girls, 1 boy), one of the girls started asking herself if she was a psychopath and plotted with the help of the boy in the group to murder their friend to see if she would feel something, therefore "proving" she really was a psycho. They killed the other young girl with a knife, turns out, they panicked, she wasn't a psychopath. Kids are really something, huh. I'm Brazilian btw.

It shows all someone who's inert and ostracized from society needs is a friend who feels the same. When you're inert you need to be activated by another person. Someone who makes the world feel like magic.

What I love about this show is how REALISTIC it is, we have all been Alyssa and also James. It’s terrifying and beautiful.
I'm rewatching the show because I got a book idea for something similar and I just noticed that after the introduction, all of James' s1 narrations are in past tense while Alyssa always talks in present tense. Thought that was an interesting choice but I have no clue why.
Edit: I just figured out, he is supposed to be narrating all of that during his run in the last episode because he switches to present tense at the very end while he is running "I just turned 18, and I think I understand what people mean to each other."

I watched this show in the wrong order accidentally. I watched the last episode, then the 2nd, and onward, before watching the pilot when I realized I had already watched the last episode. Watching the end and then going back to the beginning was actually a cool way to watch, and not knowing the plan that was decided in the pilot until the end was not that big of a surprise but I liked it nonetheless. Idk what it feels like to watch it the right way but the way I watched it I really enjoyed
