One thing that seems to have been missed is that the pidgin "I dey" and the patois "Mi deh ya" phrases for "I'm fine" are virtually the same thing. In fact the Yoruba equivalent is "Mo wa" which roughly translates to "I am existing" or "I am (here)"

How old is Nigerian Pidgin for them to be calling it a pidgin? I had always heard that it’s called a pidgin if you have people communicating who speak different languages who then create a way to communicate effectively with each other, but when the next generation is born speaking the pidgin as their first language, it becomes a creole language. I wonder if it remains classified as a pidgin because the speakers are all still passing down their native languages while in the diaspora, our native languages were made illegal, so the pidgin from the 1700s became our first languages and, thus, our creole…

There is something we tend to forget... There is an actual pigin without the slangs, though most commonly spoken by the oldies, and then the one with slangs, which young people usually speak(and with the very openness of taking in New words everyday)...
It is also worthy of note that each region in Nigeria, has their unique way of saying their respective pigins... But the good thing is, we all still understand all, however it is said
