    In response to RA1 (the star move), if white plays QE1 then F2 is covered, so the knight would no longer have it as a mating square, and the rook on G2 would also have support. That pinned rook on G2 would then become stronger, and the 1st rank would also be adequately defended. I think QE1 would have solved the attack. RxB1 could then be safely followed by QxR. Black would only have a draw in that scenario (repetitions of NF2+, KG1, NH3+, KH1, etc.).

    After Black's rook to a1, doesn't Qb3 save the game for Axel? No action Black takes with either of the two rooks will work after that, it seems.
    Edit: okay, that doesn't work, only Qe1 and then to c1 would stop cm.

      Nihal is the new Vasyl Ivanchuk, he almost always has the better position but he most definitely ALWAYS is in time trouble... If I watch too many of Nihal's games I will grow old before my time...
