- There are SO MANY persona games in the series, but Persona 4 remains one of, if not THE most popular Persona games ever made. But why is Persona 4 SO POPULAR?
Persona 4 Golden remains one of the most played persona games ever made as well as a fan favourite. But the question as to how persona 4 got so popular remains - is it the story, is it the bosses, is it the gameplay?

@@akdyearling Literally not. Persona 3 everyone has a common goal in mind. Realistically this is how most relationships work as they each get someone out of another. P5 is way too large for it’s own good. P4 being set in a small town works to it’s advantage. The gang is the ideal friend group. What I’d wish for in a friend group personally.

Its been a while but I remembered P3 party is the worst compared to the others. You got an android acting like a child, 2 upper students who only talked to you in the first place because of the goal, and you have your supposed "best friend" who you get jealous vibes from and (spoiler) was probably glad of your fate at the end of the game. The only cool one is the doggo

Persona 4 is just a more special experience for me(?) I guess. The characters were way more relatable then in P5 and some actually inspired me to be a better person. Kanji is my favorite character in the entire series, and the culprit is such a good villain, i love when the Protag and Antagonist have a relationship where they are the same but different. It just felt so different than P5, it’s probably my favorite game ever honestly. Not saying there’s things I wouldn’t change if I could, having fanservice supreme for February was something I wish absolutely didn’t exist.

Persona 4 motivated me to finish high school. I was super depressed in senior year and almost flunked to repeat the year. It motivated me to the point where I boosted my grades high and I needed to finish 2 weeks of summer school to improve my last two classes and I had an A on both of them!

I’m really glad to read something like this, congratulations! The game made me so happy as well, in a moment that I was so alone in the college I met Persona 4 and I saw in the characters my chilhood friends of my home town (the college was in another city 12 hours of distance). The game brought me back to home and I can say now that I’m finally formed 🥰✌️

i feel like i would have done better in my life too if i played P3 (i played through reloaded) or p4 sooner. i did well in highschool doing my own thing but it was not not the most efficient

I played P4 in my 30s and it made me feel things I've only felt in my 15s. That's something special.
I think Persona 4 somehow creates a silly atmosphere despite being a really dark story with a cast of characters that work so well with each other that you can listen to their interactions for hours without ever getting bored. I felt like the other games in the series were friends of circumstance while in Persona 4, these guys will be friends for life.
Finally someone who realizes how dark p4 is. Yes it's definitely the most lighthearted persona game but it's still really dark.

It is the growth of the characters. You have this Breakfast club style of characters who come together by chance and they battle their insecurities as well as open up to each other throughout the game. There are points where you feel really uncomfortable and the game covers a wide range of relatable themes not usually done in videogames. Also in such a cool way which is relevant to the story. It is so rewarding and really immersive how the game emotionally grips the player.
This is some great analysis! You're spot on about how the relatability of the cast allows difficult subjects to be tackled in a more easy-going way. Completely agree.
I think the best reason is the theme about finding your true self and accepting your shadow.
Every Persona game (at least since 3) has the team accepting their shadows in some way or another but P4 makes it the focus of the story for the most part.
I'm sure most can relate to Kanji and the feeling of being mistreated only because your likes didn't accommodate to your gender.
Also to note that the shadows are not "defeated" by brute force, but by the owner of that shadow accepting it and going on, trying to become the best part of themselves.

Cause it had the best cast, they genuinely feel like real friends and I feel you bond with them more than any of the other games especially with the Golden version of the games.

I haven't got that far into 5 (only beat the 2nd palace) but I feel like the problem with 5 is all the characters feel too cool for me, meanwhile 4's characters feel the most like people I would hang out with and be best friends with irl, they're flawed and genuine (3s probably the middle ground) also I think 4 has the best party member social links

I enjoy the Saturday morning cartoon feel. It's weirdly a comfort game for me. I played it one summer a couple years ago while my dad was in hospital and it really helped in taking me away from reality for a while. It was also my best run

Not only an interesting history, but also an easy to understand lore compared to 5 and 3, a cast that actually feel like a group of friends, a protagonist which has a perfect balance between serious and comedic, the one that introduced third tier personas, a plot twist that before 5 was pretty hard to expect, and better social links. Am I forgetting anything else?

P4G was my first Persona game and it hit me HARD. I barely noticed that the exposition was almost two hours long because it was presented so well. I played the game obsessively for months. P4G is a masterpiece.
love every of them (also played smt iv/nocturne) but p2 eternal punishment and p4g remain the goats for me. the cast in both case is the best and they have a really intriguing story
P4 Golden is honestly the best JRPG of all time for me (I dont consider Dark Souls a jrpg).

Ngl, while my personal favorite might be P3 in terms of the battle system, P4 is my favorite in literally every other category.
The game got a bunch of absolutely amazing improvements coming from p3 that I have been absolutely spoiled on and cannot live without now such as the ability to choose what skills your persona can learn in Fusion, the art style has a sort of timelessness to it that I really feels fits the Persona side of Shin Megami tensei perfectly, ironically much more than I feel Persona 5 does. But most importantly I feel the game's message about reaching out to the truth, per say, is exemplified in the multiple endings you can choose and the fact that you can completely miss the true ending of the game if you don't constantly aim to find the truth about the case. Persona 4 is my personal favorite to replay to experience the story and honestly I would rather replay it over Persona 5.
Not to mention, there isn't a single song in the soundtrack that I dislike or could live without.
Completely agree - the quality of life improvements were HUGE for the series. I often hear players that come from P3 feel the same as you do - P4 flows so smoothly.

It wasn’t a fun mystery they got their answer literally from thin air there was no build up to the answer they just somehow got it.
Played 5 Royal first but I’ve fallen in love with the series as a whole thanks to 4 Golden

I love persona 4 golden because I made friends in the game . (u know what I mean) They are like friends it felt that I really bind with them
Yeah the mystery is nice and all but the real reason people love it is because it makes you nostalgic for a simpler time with close friends even if you haven't experienced some of the events everything still feels familiar

I may be off base, but honestly I think it has more to do with accessibility. 4 has multiple anime, movies, was on Steam first, is older than 5, better manga and is in all spin offs, PLUS it's Dancing game came first.
I think 3, at least Portable, is strictly better than 4 in almost every way, and I mean that literally besides a very small number of quality of life I don't think 4 is even close to 3, it's just so much easier to get a hold of.
Yeah these are all great points - accessibility to the series becoming easier with each new game crossing platforms has most definitely broadened the fanbase :D

From someone who lives in Europe, way off base. We only got P4G on the PS Vita which was a very unpopular and undersold console. So unles syou knew about it, you likely missed this amazing JRPG.
@@petenewby9882 Let's get this out of the way first. Physically P4 sold about 683K while P3 sold 689K, HOWEVER P4 also sold over 1M units over steam, which means it almost sold 1M more than P3. And this is all versions put together.
(Source is a cite called Persona Central which has an article on physical sales for all game by 2020 and another article on P4 Steam sales from 2021)
But that shows how much the Steam sales and overall exposure helped P4, which P3 didn't get.
I prefer Persona 5 as a whole, but I can't deny that I felt closer to the P4 characters way more, especially in this freakin true ending that absolutely destroys me each time it plays
Yep, story was amazing and characters were equally amazing. But major props to 3 and 5, still absolutely amazing, too. I still need to get around to the first 2.
My friend and I discussed this. And the basic conclusion was that the P4 group seemed like good enough friends that they would still become friends even without the Persona stuff going on.
I mean, maybe not the underclassmen, and Naoto wouldnt even be there if not for the murders, but its totally believeable that Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko would form a tight knit friend group even without the craziness.
On the other hand, most of the P5 group dont seem like theyd get along under normal circumstances, at least compared to the P4 group.
Also the animated series for 4 is the best and actually gives the MC a personality

P4G got the best cast since it's easier to likes them cuz they're friends as the game go on.
Unlike p3 where they're kinda cold to each other for the most part. (I still love p3 more).
As for p5, it's just weird combination of characters. I don't feel that friendly vibe.
That's true - P4 is has a happier vibe, whereas like you pointed out, P3's cast is pretty harsh on eachother.
Oh for sure- I feel like the p5 cast could have gotten along; I will honestly never understand why they didn't make them get along more. It would've been at least 30% better if they treated Ryuji like he was human imo- even Junpei got treated better than him. It is an odd mix of characters, but so was the p4 cast, and they got along wonderfully. The p5 cast was a missed opportunity.

@@GeminiSunrise06 nah in p4 only two ppl was already friends soon as u meet them chie and Yukiko Yosuke wasn’t close to them and you can tell because they call him by his last name only when y’all do because friends because the case they call each other by name in p3 it’s the same as person above said and in 5 it’s basically the same as 4 Ryuji and Ann knew each other since Middle school and the others come later

Persona 4’s characters to me are the most well written in the series. The way they interact with each other and with the MC is really fun and makes them feel like a real group of friends which is something SEES and the PT lacked. (Obviously P1-P2 don’t have a focus on the social aspect but if they did I wouldn’t be surprised if P2IS was a contender for this title).
When I finished P4 for the first time i had never felt that sad finishing a video game ever because I felt like I was leaving actual friends behind, whereas with every other game they just feel like characters with no connection to you the player behind the screen
In Persona 3's defence, I don't think the SEES members were supposed to get along very well. They were always quite harsh to one another, and I think that was intentional.

Persona 4 PS2 is the first one I played in the series. My local PS2 game seller suggested it to me. Tried it and fell inlove with it.
Best random time I had.
I remember that Adachi twist got.me. playing as a kid I had no clue who it was and had to literally google who the killer was when you had to tell Naoto.

Persona 4 is a wonderful game with well thought out gameplay, easy to understand features and story, a beautiful presentation and a charm that you simply can’t find anywhere else
True reason : persona 4 is an awesome game that a lot of people who are currently active on the internet grew up with.
I really don't think the story is better than 5 of 3
Out of those three, 4 story might actually be the weakest, but it compensates with very touching confident and fun light hearted and heatwarming interaction withing the party.

I think 4 is most popular, because it’s got great social links and for the most part, the story doesn’t have a bad part. 3’s social links are the weakest, due to it being the first to do so and 5 has some story issues, especially Morgana bitching off for no real reason and makes it seem like Ryuji is mean to him, despite Morgana is more rude to Ryuji and the fact Joker can’t do crap that part of the game without the bitch, so it really leaves you upset. I think 4 has the best mechanics all around and definitely set the standard for ten game. But all three are great and I’m glad 3 is being remade, because it needs it.
The story is not only good, but paced well with several plot twists. Certin decisions have urgancy and consequences, often leading to different outcomes for the story. The characters are likeable, and the small town setting is unique not only in the SMT/Persona franchise but in Japanese gaming as a whole. Speaking of the setting, Inaba feels like a living, breathing place, to the point where the town itself feels like a character in the story and not just a backdrop.
Quick question, I defeated ameno sagiri and after a cutscene with the others, it skips to the last day. Do we not get the opportunity to play during Jan, Feb and March? This is on ps2 btw.

Tbf the twist in Persona 4 is the main villain reveal while in Persona 5, it's a subversion of the new persona twist villain cliché that Atlus loves to use (Ikutsuki and Adachi).
Instead of the twist being the villain, it's the main characters managing to outsmart the villain's schemes and making you the player think that you failed.
That's the twist. And that's why imo it's the best twist in the current persona game.

Atlus themselves was not expecting Persona to be as popular as it was it’s crazy how a spin off surpassed the main games
I love persona the first time I played these game I was surprised to find a game about a group of teenagers was surprisingly mature the characters had real issues and trials that they had to face and overcome.
So many themes especially in p4 about embracing who you’re really resonated with me very few games do this. And on top of that it’s just an awesome Jrpg in general it hits all the boxes amazing story great characters good battle system music these games have it all
As for persona 6 that will definitely be on all platforms can’t wait to see what they do with that one

I played persona 4 for the first time last summer, and that was when I moved to another province and didn't have any friends, that time was hard for me but P4 really helped me feel less lonely because of how real all the characters feel. I know it might seem stupid but they actually feel like real friends to me and I feel like if they were real I'd be friends with them in reality too.
Because it is genuinely one of the best video games of all time, from its environment and characters, to its awesome art style that literally beats out what Gamefreak does today in 2022. Its truly something special
Persona 3 was a great game. Persona 5 was a great game, better even than 3. But Persona 4 remains, in my heart, the best, and the only one I keep returning to.
Helps that Giant Bomb helped popularised Let's Plays by playing through the original
idk if its just me but the way the p4 cast just refer to each other as “classmates” or whatever just makes them feel less as friends.
in p5 u see the characters interact and hang out with each other but in o4 it just seems like they just had one real friend in the group they talked to and hung out with and then everyone just praises the mc.

ngl, out of the persona games, i think i prefer 3 (specifically fes), idk, i think it just hit me real hard, aswell as that, i actualy kind of like not being able to directly control the party, while it can be annoing when mitsuru attempts to marin karin a boss again, when the party actualy manages to pull of a plan you trhough together, it feels real damn gratifying

I played all of the persona and p4g is my all time favourite. P5r is cool and stylish but there's something in p4g that makes you want to play it more. Great storyline, fun dungeon/castle and overall story fits so right
P4G is such a vibrant and fun game - I find it's just really pleasant to play! Really feels like comfort gaming hahaha

Actually, the real reason it became so popular was because of the re-release of the golden on Vita and the anime. Before that, the persona and smt series were so niche and hidden like the gaia series. Heck, it even came out super late in the ps2s life cycle. every time i told my friends i was playing persona 3 and 4 and devil summoner instead of playing the new sytems, they were like "whats a persona?"

The ending is sooo great
P4 Golden (refering specifically to that version) is popular because, to put it simple, appeals to the feelings of players.
Topics like: confronting your own demons, self acceptance, friendship and having a light-hearted and charismatic cast will push the buttons of anyone since it feels so humane.
Now golden well... a shitload of fanservice and anime tropes that don't add anything relevant to a plot who was good the way it was. Marie's the worst offender.
Adachi's SL and selective Inheritance are perhaps the most meaningful additions.
I must be one of the few ones who will choose to play vanilla game.
It's comfy, down to Earth, 100% relatable, the characters are very good, the music is fantastic....i could go on for hours
